Carol Pearson collection

Collection consists of correspondence inward to Carol Pearson from Emily Carr between 1942-1945. The letters were used by Pearson in her book entitled "Emily Carr as I Knew Her", published in 1954.

Also included in the collection are letters documenting the correspondence's provenance.

Pacific Cinematheque collection

The collection consists of film printing elements and film prints accumulated by the Pacific Cinematheque as part of their archival mandate.

The collection also includes a few release prints of older National Film Board productions (1944-1968), most of which are no longer circulated by the NFB. These films on British Columbia subjects were selected from the Cinematheque's collection of NFB prints, most of which were acquired from the Vancouver Public Library. There is also a video transfer of the NFB film "Breakdown" (1951).

A smaller part of the collection (accession F1987:21) comprises prints and/or printing elements of nine films made in the period 1969-1975 by Vancouver independent and student filmmakers, including Peter Bryant, Fred Cawsey, Tom Shandel, Sylvia Spring, and Richard Watson. Most of these are short 16 mm films, but there are also 35 mm theatrical release prints of two B.C. features: Shandel's "Another Smith for Paradise" and Spring's "Madeleine Is . . .", both released in 1971.

Dr. John Bindernagel Research Collection into the Sasquatch

The collection consists of material created and collected by Dr. John Bindernagel as part of his research into the Sasquatch. A large part of the material is not original, but was collected by or given to him throughout the course of his career.

The collection consists of original and copies of photos, eyewitness drawings, historical articles relating to Sasquatch sightings, plaster casts of tracks, television and radio interviews featuring Bindernagel, as well as interviews made by Bindernagel.

B.C. music collection

The collection comprises about 1830 published sound recordings, mainly of music composed, arranged, and performed by British Columbia and Western Canadian musicians, or which was recorded in the province or released by British Columbia companies. A wide variety of musical genres are represented, including classical and orchestral music, country and western, electronic music, folk and folk-rock, jazz, pop, rock, new wave and punk. The recordings span the years from the early 1940s to 1988. The collection reflects the emergence of Vancouver-based record companies such as Aragon, Mushroom, and Nettwerk. The West coast musical scene of the 1980s -- which coincided with the collection's creation -- is particularly well documented.

The collection comprises audio recordings of interviews, news conferences, press events, election campaigns, speeches, and other activities related to provincial politics in British Columbia, recorded and compiled by BC Radio News, mainly between 1975 and 1981. Many of these recordings feature New Democratic Party leader David Barrett or Social Credit Party leader (and Premier) Bill Bennett. In addition, there are recordings of Bennett's key cabinet colleagues, as well as MLAs from both sides of the legislature.

The collection consists of photographs acquired or collected by George Allen and include the following: ca. 1730 nitrate negatives depicting early aerial photography of the B.C. lower mainland and Pacific west coast to Anyox, for the period 1926-1932. These photographs were taken by the photographer Stuart Thomson, and also by Western Canada Airways/Pacific Airways Lt., precursors of Canadian Pacific Air. These photographs are numbered from 1a to 1726 with gaps.

There are ca. 1150 negatives, both glass and nitrate, of views depicting Vancouver and area, Fraser River Valley, Victoria and Nanaimo, roads etc. taken from 1901 to the 1930's, all taken by professional photographers including Stuart Thomson, the Edwards Brothers, Richard Broadbridge and Gowen Sutton Company Ltd. These photographs are numbered from 1301 to 3230 with gaps.

The collection also includes ca. 2570 nitrate negatives and contact prints of the Okanagan region, Vancouver Island, some of Banff, Calgary, Lethbridge, Winnipeg, and Quebec from the 1920s to 1954. These photographs were mainly taken by photographer C. C. Wright while in the employ of Gowen and Sutton, commercial producer of postcards. These photographs were acquired by George Allen in the 1950's and added to his collection. They are numbered from 1 to 1945 with many large gaps and unnumbered files.

Chinese women and work in B.C. collection

The collection consists of oral history interviews with Chinese women about their experiences working in British Columbia from the 1920s to the 1950s. The interviews, with nine first-, second- or third-generation Chinese-Canadian women, were recorded in Vancouver, Victoria and New Westminster during the first half of 1984. The project focused on "women's work" (whether paid or unpaid), including work in the home and in family businesses. The interviews discuss the kind of work these women did; what they experienced; how they perceived their roles in the family and the Chinese community; and the legislative policies which affected their work and their lives. The interviewees are to remain anonymous, and should be referred to only by the assigned pseudonyms. In addition, two of the interviews are closed to public access.
