Vancouver City Police Force Inquiry

The series consists of records of the Vancouver City Police Force Inquiry. Records include the Commission Secretary's minutes and list of exhibits (1955-1956); a letter to the Attorney-General's office (1955); an unsigned memorandum; the interim report (1955) and the final report (1956) by Commissioner Reginald Hibbert Tupper; and 35 volumes of evidence in transcript form and transcripts of proceedings (1955-1956). Volumes 1, 2, 4 and 5 of the transcripts of evidence were never received by the BC Archives.

This series consists of architectural proposals and consultants reports on topics connected with the construction of public buildings, urban development, siting, traffic patterns, and design requirements. Reports have been created for the Department of Public Works by various sources, including Arthur Erikson Architects, The Environmental Analysis Group (TEAG), UBC School of Architecture, BCIT, Vancouver City Planning Department, and other various architects and engineers.

Farris family fonds

The fonds comprises video copies of the farris family's 16 mm home movies. Subjects include: Farris family reunion, 1920 (Vancouver & Victoria); UBC convocation, August 1938; Farris garden party for law convention, August 1938; Garden party at "Mils," ca. 1935; boating, fishing, etc., probably at Pennask Lake.

The series consists of a record book created by the Vancouver Immigration Dept. in 1903. Between 1900 and 1908, British Columbia passed nine acts which empowered officials to require prospective immigrants to pass a written test in any language of Europe prior to admission. Of the nine acts, eight were disallowed by the federal government and one (1907) was reserved by the Lieutenant-Governor.

The book records the names and passport numbers of Japanese passengers coming into the Port of Vancouver, the date of arrival, the name of the ship, where the passenger was from, and whether or not they were allowed to pass into Canada.

Ray Goodwin fonds

The fonds consists of 128 photographs created by Ray Starr Goodwin. The photographs include pictures of Ray Goodwin and other members of the Goodwin and Green families of Kaslo, B.C. between ca. 1900 and 1920. There are images of Kaslo, of family members at home, at their summer camp at Beauty Beach on Kootenay Lake, camping at Greer's Beach (Kitsilano) and in Stanley Park, Vancouver.

There are also photographs of Kootenay Lake and other natural features around the Kootenay Lake and Kaslo area such as the Kokanee Glacier as well as photographs of steamboats, the Kaslo and Slocan Railway and various mines.

The series consists of selected Family Court case files created by the Vancouver Provincial Court and its predecessor, the Vancouver Family Court, between 1942 and 1972.

The sample files were chosen by the Court and consist of case files created under the following acts:

Box 2: Juvenile Delinquents Act
Box 3 : Protection of Children Act
Box 4: Wives and Children's Maintenance Act

Although the files are identified by name, there is no discernible arrangement or file code system for the sampled files.

Vancouver Supreme Court indexes to cause books and case record cards

This series consists of indexes from 1893 to 1994 for Vancouver Supreme Court civil cause books and case record cards found within GR-1608 (1893-1975, 1986-1994). Indexes were created by the Vancouver Supreme Court registry.

Over time, index entries vary and may be searchable by type of case, by only the name of the plaintiff, or by either the name of the plaintiff or the defendant. Records were scheduled for full retention under Court Services ORCS (schedule 100152) 51400-25.

48th Battalion C.E.F. Association fonds

The fonds consists of the records of the 48th Battalion, C.E.F., Association and includes correspondence, newsletters, programs and financial information from 1936 to 1980. Most of these records were created by the Association's Vancouver branch secretary, Al La Fortune. The fonds also includes a photograph album created by La Fortune between 1915 and 1959 which shows members of the 48th Battalion (3rd Pioneer Battalion) at the Willows training camp in Victoria, going overseas, in England and at Vimy in France. The album also has photographs of the Association getting together for their reunions in Victoria from 1947 to 1959.

This series consists of printed records relating to the following court cases: the Attorney General of the Province of British Columbia versus Theodore Ludgate, and the Attorney General of the Dominion of Canada regarding ownership of Deadman's Island, Burrard Inlet.

Records include Attorney-General vs. Ludgate report by Robert Cassidy to the Attorney General for British Columbia on the appeal of the Dominion of Canada from the 1901 judgment of Martin, J. (Queen's Printer, 1904, 7 p.). The series also includes various exhibits and other records, such as exhibit 6, "Extracts from blue book containing papers relating to the affairs of British Columbia, 1859-1864" (pp. 307-307(81)); "Evidence before Full Court in addition to that taken at trial" and Exhibits V,W,X,Y (pp. 366-430); reasons for judgment of Chief Justice Gordon Hunter, Justice M.W. Tyrwhitt Drake, and Justice P. A. Irving (pp. 431-445); and B.C. Supreme Court decisions (pp. 446-449). Box 2 contains several duplicates of pp. 307-307(81) and pp. 366-450.

This series consists of the records of the Commission of Inquiry Into the Affairs of Present and Past Boards of School Trustees of the City of Vancouver, 1913-1914. Commission records consist of Letter Patent appointing the commissioner and a copy of oath, Provincial Secretary's correspondence, exhibits, transcripts of evidence presented at proceedings and the original signed report(s).

The commissioner, Vancouver barrister Henry Osborne Alexander, was appointed to investigate the actions of past and present Boards of School Trustees of the City of Vancouver with regard to purchase and sale of school sites and school property, the purchase of furniture and supplies and generally all matters coming under the Board's jurisdiction. He was to investigate also the personal actions of all Board members, officers and employees, and appointments made by the Board.

This series consists of the records of the Commission on the Sale by Public Auction, 1909, of Suburban Lands in the New Westminster Land District, 1916. The commissioner, Vancouver lawyer Robert Wilson Harris, was appointed 28 April 1916 to investigate the sale and all dealings, transfers, payments, etc. of certain suburban lands in Point Grey in district lots 139, 140, 176, 538, 540, 206, 217 and 2027 in the New Westminster land district. Commission records consist of Provincial Secretary's correspondence file, evidence presented at the hearings (reproduced as an appendix to the report) and a signed copy of the commissioner's report.
