Soldier - BC Horse

Photograph depicts a cavalry soldier from the 30th Regiment, British Columbia Horse on his horse. This regiment recruited for the 2nd Canadian Mounted Rifles which was where this soldier likely belonged. He would have trained as cavalry but served in the war as infantry. This soldier carries his Ross Rifle on the side of his saddle.

1st Contingent; waiting to board ship

Photograph depicts several lines of soldiers at the CPR station in downtown Victoria. This group of soldiers, probably primarily from the 1st British Columbia Regiment (later forming the 7th Battalion) were among the first soldiers sent to Europe for the war. The group of soldiers in the darker uniforms are from the 5th Regiment of the Canadian Garrison Artillery. In the background is another ship carrying more soldiers to whom the ones waiting at the terminal wave.

Soldier, 50th Gordon Highlanders

Photograph depicts a soldier wearing a highland uniform. This includes the British pattern khaki Highland cut-away 'doublet' jacket with five buttons, khaki kilt apron with integral pocket (replaces the sporran in tradition Highland dress) and a Balmoral for headdress. Tartans were removed from kilts during the war as they were costly and difficult to supply. His badges are from the 50th Regiment, Gordon Highlanders but given the date of this photograph he may have been attached to the 2nd Depot Battalion, British Columbia Regiment.

Photograph depicts soldiers on the deck of the SS Princess Victoria, a CPR ship providing service between Victoria and Vancouver. These men belong to a draft of soldiers from the 5th Royal Garrison Artillery, possibly attached to the West Indies Regiment in the Bahamas or involved in some way to their training, as the photographer has clearly labelled this box with "Bahamas Contingent".
