Ministry of Health executive records. This collection includes the files of J.W. Mainguy (Deputy Minister of Health 1975-1978), W.J. Lyle (Deputy Minister of the Hospital Insurance Service 1972-1975 and Deputy Minister of Medical and Hospital Programs 1975-1977), and Chapin Key (Deputy Minister of Health 1978-1981). It also contains files of outgoing correspondence of Dennis Cocke (Minister of Health 1972-1975), and R.H. McClelland (Minister of Health 1975-1979). Box 1 - Physical Plant surveys for hospitals from AbbotsfordZeballos, done by James A. Hamilton and associates in 1948. Gives a good snapshot of hospitals and hospital services available at the time in different parts of B.C. The published report based on this information, A Hospital Plan of a Professional Educational Programme for the Province of B.C. (1949), gives only a general review of the suitability of various buildings. This report is available in GR 2650 box 3.

Webster! : 1981-10-01

Public affairs. Jack Webster's popular weekday morning talk show. Guests and topics for this episode are: Jack opens with a story about Barry Ackerman, a BC resident sentenced, without trial, to life imprisonment in Thailand for heroin smuggling. Jack interviews Lynette Bateman, Ackerman’s sister; Darlene Paulson, a close friend of Ackerman; and Bob Allan, Ackerman’s lawyer. Next topic is the situation at Mary Hill Hospital and in the studio are the Matron, Margaret Varcoe, and Hal Salway, the facility’s owner and administrator. A change in Ministry of Health policy means shifting long-term patients from Mary Hill Hospital to other facilities.

Patient assessment

Training film. This program covers the pre-hospital and hospital approach to patient assessment, with emphasis on physical assessment. It also contains a demonstration and explanation of the Glasgow Coma Scale.

[Columbia Coast Mission : M.S. John Antle]

Footage. The Columbia Coast Mission boat "John Antle" (the third CCM vessel of that name) on patrol with Canon Alan D. Greene. Shot in the early 1950s when the "John Antle" was based at Pender Harbour, patrolling the Jervis Inlet area and the northern part of the Strait of Georgia. Footage of scenery, settlements and people encountered, and services performed by Canon Greene at various stops. Identifiable locales include Ballenas Light Station, Surge Narrows on Read Island [Tipton's Store], and the Canadian Red Cross Society's Outpost Hospital on Stuart Island. Also includes hospital interiors (ward, first aid, operation in progress); logging camp cookhouse interior; logging operations (felling tree with axe and crosscut saw); children; village scenes. The mission boat "Rendezvous" and a CN steamship (possibly the "Prince Rupert") also appear.

Columbia Coast Mission records

The Columbia Coast Mission (C.C.M) was inaugurated in 1905 by Reverend John Antle of the Anglican Church to serve the medical and spiritual needs of logging camps on the coast of B.C. between Vancouver Island and the Mainland.

Records include: correspondence, conveyances, minute books, reports, accounts, parish records, and log-books of mission ships.

Public Works contracts and other material

The series consists of contract sets for diverse public works: buildings, bridges, roads and road works, ferries and ferry facilities, etc. The contract sets, usually signed by the contractor and the minister, often include the notices to contractors as they appeared in The British Columbia Gazette, tender forms, schedules of quantities, specifications, contracts, insurance policies, correspondence, and plans.

Tranquille Sanatorium records

In 1907 the British Columbia Anti-Tuberculosis Society built the Tranquille sanatorium for the care of persons afflicted with Tuberculosis. The provincial government purchased the sanatorium in 1921 from the Society. This unit includes a small amount of material from the pre-1921 period (1909-1920).

This unit includes records of the Anti-Tuberculosis Society, correspondence of the medical superintendent of Tranquille Sanatorium with his counterparts at many sanatoria in North America and with the Deputy Provincial Secretary. The reports of the Central Council of the Tuberculosis Division and the Coordinating Committee at Tranquille give a good picture of life in the institution, as does the file labelled "Pests". The lectures and examinations for student nurses give a useful view of the understanding and treatment of the disease. The unit also includes packages for various departmental conferences in the 1930s which show how the various branches of the Department of the Provincial Secretary were coordinated.

In 1958, when it was no longer required as a tuberculosis hospital, Tranquille was transferred to Mental Health Services.

In 1975 the name of the BCHIS was changed to Hospital Programs as part of a reorganization within the Ministry.

These files document the liaison and supervision activities of the Hospital Consultation and Inspection Division in dealing with private hospitals throughout the province. They consist of originals and copies of general correspondence and memoranda, complaints about the level of care and service and reports of the resulting investigations, regular review reports and recommendations, copies of incident reports relating to patients, dietetics reports and meal surveys, visit notes, other general reports, and statistics. These records are arranged alphabetically by institution.

Between ourselves : Beyond the call

SUMMARY: "Between Ourselves" was a weekly series of hour-long radio programs that presented Canada to Canadians. It featured aspects of Canadian life in docudramas, plays, music, and interviews, originating fr;om different regions of Canada. The series ran from 1966 to 1979. This episode, "Beyond the Call", is the story of three Canadian Red Cross outpost hospitals in BC. Prepared and introduced by J.J. McC;oll, the program includes interviews with nurses at these isolated hospital outposts -- Betty Dolk in Kyuquot, Alice Owen in Edgewood, and Margaret Pardy in Bamfield.;

Allan Robertson interview

He describes his education with John Manson's family; how eggs were the ;main industry; the first settlers of Cortes from 1870 to 1890; Whaletown; Mansons Landing; the growth of Cortes, including the fluctuations and flow of settlers from 1908 to 1920; the climate on the island; more on the development of Cortes; a description of John and Mike Manson; and Allan describes his early life, supporting his family and beginning to log. TRACK 2: Mr. Robertson describes his ;mother as a midwife; and the hospitals of Powell River and Vancouver and Campbell River. He then describes the conditions; clothes; steamship travel; and drinking in logging camps. He then discusses; the Columbia Coast Mission and ministers Alan Greene and John Antle.

Mr. Robertson then recalls the history of the pulp and paper industry through the history of the Crown Zellerbach, including the reason for t;he odor produced by pulp mills; and he describes the process of paper making. TRACK 2: Mr. Robertson continues with more on the paper making process: the effects of waste on the environment; and reforestation. Then Mr. Robertson discusses commercial and sport salmon fishing; the origins of the name Cortes Island; more on growing up there including a description of the area; canneries on Blind Channel; his own education; and a comparison between kids yesterday and today.

Provincial Secretary executive records

This series consists of executive records of the Provincial Secretary, covering a wide variety of topics. The Provincial Secretary's department was responsible for a broad range of legislation and activities - including the civil service, provincial elections and (until 1946) health and welfare services. These records comprise part of the former Provincial Secretary's Central Registry. This registry consisted of general correspondence, policy directives, branch reports, inter-departmental memoranda, circulars, grant applications, and a host of miscellaneous documents.

The finding aid consists of two parts. Part I is a box/file list showing the original order and arrangement of the records. The records fall into six categories or subseries:

A. General correspondence: correspondence inward (with replies), reports, circulars, etc.
B. Appointments: correspondence, commissions, oaths of allegiance of coroners, magistrates, and other appointed officials.
C. Resident Physicians: correspondence re: grants paid to physicians in isolated communities
D. Grants: correspondence and reports pertaining to grants paid to various community groups and charitable organizations, service clubs, etc.
E. Workmen's Compensation Board: circulars, etc.
F. Contemporary card indexes: alphabetical subject index cards. Part II: Subject Index

Part II of this finding aid consists of a subject index compiled by the Provincial Archives of BC. The index indicates the main topics or subject areas - e.g. Provincial Infirmary, Elections, Industrial Schools, etc. which are documented in GR-0496. The index does not claim to be comprehensive or exhaustive, but it should help researchers to locate documents which concern particular institutions or activities.
