Me and my family by Mildred Irene Seymour

The item is a copy of "Me and my family", reminiscences of childhood and adult life in Victoria, Vancouver and the Gulf Islands by Mildred Irene Seymour, a Sidney teacher. Mrs. Seymour narrates many of her experiences as a teacher (teaching degree in Music) at Fanny Bay, Gabriola Island, Chemainus and Vancouver, describes her work with choirs and recounts her vacation travels through British Columbia, Canada and the western United States.

Reminiscences of Mary Isabella Rogers

The file consists of a photocopy of Mary Isabella Roger's reminiscences of her journey to Victoria from England in 1885, and visits to Vancouver from Victoria including one made to see the arrival of the first transcontinental train.

Two Peace River trips

The file contains photocopied information about two Peace River trips, one from 1911 by John W. Mercer and the second in August-September 1987 by Mercer's daughter "Bobs" Kirkham (Alice Katharine Mercer), granddaughter Tinkey Turner and Mathlene Leiding. J.W. Mercer traveled from Vancouver to Edmonton via Pine Pass and the Athabasca River locating coal and gas claims in 1911. In 1987 his daughter's party travelled from Norwick, Vermont to B.C. to retrace his route.

Adventures of a farm girl in Canada in 1925 / Joan Nina Simpson

The file contains "Adventures of a farm girl in Canada in 1925", by Joan Simpson, with a forward by her god-daughter, June Knowles. It consists of four reminiscences about life on a cattle ranch and in a fruit growing area of British Columbia by a young English woman who spent a year or two in British Columbia in the early 1930s. Although both personal and geographical names have been changed, the ranch on which Miss Simpson worked was undoubtedly the Church Ranch at Big Creek in the Chilcotin district.

The trail of the midnight sun

The item is a microfilm copy of a transcript entitled "The trail of the midnight sun", presumably an account of George Stuart Tuxford's own experience as a young man traveling from Moose Jaw to Dawson during the Klondike gold rush. Includes observations of life in mining camps, Dawson, the mounted police, gambling, the native people, and several hand drawn maps of the Yukon.

Account Book

Account book for general supplies such as food, hay, clothing, shoes, tools, tobacco and drinks, paid for mainly by gold dust but also by cash and goods. Two customers identified, Captain Mitchell, Quesnelle Forks, and John Love, Richfield. Although the name Kamloops appears on the microfilm title page, there is no evidence to connect this manuscript with Kamloops.

Manuscript

Untitled manuscript consisting of a preface, an introductory chapter on Compton's voyage from England to Victoria via the Straits of Magellan, and sections on the geographical features (29 p.), the aboriginal inhabitants (39 p. and 78 p.), and the natural history (85 p.) of the British Columbia Coast. Compton traveled to Victoria on board the H.B.C. steamer Labouchere, arriving at Esquimalt on January 30, 1859. He served on the Labouchere as purser and at Fort Rupert as a H.B.C. clerk. The typed transcript is entitled as "Account of early trip to Fort Victoria and of life in the colony".

Letter to Lillian Anderson from Lorraine Johns

The file is a letter to Lillian Anderson from Lorraine Johns, who had traveled to Firvale, B.C., to begin her first year of school teaching. The letter describes Johns' trip to Firvale from Bella Coola, her school, pupils, and daily life. Johns and Lillian (Anderson) Williams were classmates at the Provincial Normal School, Victoria, 1921-1922. In addition to the letter, the unit contains a 2 page biographical sketch of Johns by Williams.

Letters to Paula Blanchard

The file consists of photocopies of two letters written by Nancy Martin of Los Gatos, California in 1989, to Paula Blanchard, author of "The life of Emily Carr", Vancouver, B.C. 1987. In them, Martin explains the relationship of Emily Carr to the Hayes family. Nancy Martin is the great granddaughter of Elizabeth Hayes Martin, referred to as "Auntie" by Emily Carr in "The book of Small".

Family bible, containing a record of the marriage of Thomas Elwyn and Rebecca McNeill, 1879, the births of their daughters, Maud Mary, 1882 and Marion Harvey, 1885, the date of death (and place and date of birth) of Elwyn, and the marriage of Henry James Baker and Rebecca Elwyn.
