Donated Surplus: Being a Series of Autobiographical Essays

The series consists of a typescript copy of "Donated Surplus: Being a Series of Autobiographical Essays". They are reminiscences of Clive Cornish's boyhood in Vancouver, school days at Vernon Preparatory School (1920-1922), and early career as bank junior and clerk in salmon exporting house. Also contains sketch of his later career as chartered accountant and freelance writer. Includes memoir and autobiographical manuscript of the his father, Edgar Osman Cornish, a prominent salmon canneries exporter and commission agent.

This series contains two operational files from the Vancouver Forest District. The first file, coded MTS X4, is a Timber Management file from 1912-1917. The contents refer to Timber Sale X4 to Young and Scott of Point Grey, B.C. covering lands within the municipality of Point Grey, bounded, in part, by Sixteenth Avenue and the Musqueam Indian Reserve. The second file, which is uncoded, concerns the transfer of records to Victoria from the Supervisor of Scaler's office.

Footage. Miscellaneous subjects, including shots of downtown Vancouver streets, the Marine Building, the CPR station, a parade, and a Bristol Bitannia (a four-engined turbo-prop) airliner at Vancouver Airport. Also includes an unrelated sequence that shows hunters taking a butchered animal carcass from the back of a pack horse and loading it into a station wagon.

Resurfacing Lions Gate Bridge with epoxy resin

The item is a training film on the technique of road surfacing, using as a model the project to re-surface Lion's Gate Bridge with coal tar epoxy resin. Includes tests, technical and site preparations, and the actual undertaking of the work by Northern Construction. Originally produced for training purposes, this version was released as a public information film.

High-speed traffic footage

The item is a reel of film footage. Shot for engineering purposes, this footage uses single-frame or "time-lapse" cinematography, shot from inside a vehicle, to record automobile traffic. The first section appears to show the Squamish Highway going north. The section travels on the highway through West Vancouver, across Lions Gate Bridge, and onto Denman and Davie Streets in downtown Vancouver. The third section appears to have been shot on an interior highway south of Kamloops.

Second Narrows Bridge collapse : Gaglardi

The item is a reel of unedited film footage. Highways Minister Phil Gaglardi visits the Second Narrows Bridge construction site and inspects the section that collapsed on June 17, 1958. Shots include close-ups of the damage; reporters, police and other onlookers; a twin-rotor RCAF helicopter hovering nearby.
This reel was found among the original footage and out-takes from the film Deas Island Tunnel (1957-1959).

The item is a reel of film footage. "Fourth reel of duplications and out-footage from the B.C. Forest Service's documentation of the Royal Visit of 1939. Scenes include: Huge parade of veterans with crowds near Pattullo Bridge in New Westminster, a building across the street called "Pacific Motors". [Steamship] "Prince Robert" leaving Victoria. "Will ye no come back again" captioned across the sky. People on the breakwater, Victoria, watching the ship carry the Royal couple back to Vancouver. Planes fly over Lion's Gate Bridge, Vancouver. Children dance around the maypole to honour the King and Queen. Crowds of people. Parade of veterans. King and Queen, preceded and followed by many cars, drive around a curve in the road. A ceremonial Welcome arch in Saanich. A sign reading "Saanich School Children", kids waving flags. King and Queen drive over a wooden bridge under Saanich arch, throngs of people cheering and waving flags. Lunch at a picnic table for a family. Street in Esquimalt (?) with cars and buildings decorated. Highland band marches past." (Colin Browne)

Maintaining the quality of Canadian grown seed through the production and use of registered seed

The item is a documentary film from ca. 1931, originally on three separate reels. "The first two reels establish the importance of crossing different strains of wheat to create hardier and better strains, but there is nothing about British Columbia. Reel Three however, after showing the harvesting and threshing of grain on the prairies, moves to scenes of grain handling and shipping at the Port of Vancouver. [Long shot] grain elevator, Vancouver and closer shots of same. Pan across harbour to ship being loaded. Many good shots of terminal loading and storage facilities. Ship at wharf: "Dalveen". Excellent shots of ship being loaded, the facilities, and men working on the ship and docks." (Colin Browne)

Where's Winston?

The item consists of an instructional video produced for the Public Legal Education Society and funded by the Ministry of the Attorney General in 1989. The video is a fictional account of an actual event, and tells the story of "Winston", a 16 year old, newly arrived immigrant from China, living in Vancouver. Winston becomes involved in criminal gang activities after being bullied at school, eventually commits a murder and is sent to prison for eight years. The video was meant to be shown with accompanying teaching materials to educate youth.

Construction of the Lion's Gate Bridge, Vancouver

The item consists of an ECO master made from an industrial film originally made between 1937 and 1939. It contains a detailed record of the construction of the First Narrows Bridge (Lion's Gate Bridge) between Vancouver and the North Shore of Burrard Inlet. A.J.T. Taylor, who promoted the idea of the bridge and the residential development of the North Shore, is seen discussing the plans with architect John Anderson. The bridge was first crossed by a car on November 4, 1938 and opened to the public on November 12, 1938. John Anderson receives the first toll ticket. Charles Marega's sculptured lions are shown. The "Empress of Japan" steams under the bridge. On May 29, 1939 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth cross the bridge and later, under naval escort, they pass under it aboard a ship bound for Victoria.

[Khatsahlano : Zoe (Peach) Jackson interview]

Interview. An interview with Zoe (Peach) Jackson. Born in 1908, she immigrated from England, first settling in Gibsons then in Kitsilano in 1912. Her brother, George Jackson, established Jackson's Meats, which today is the oldest family-owned store in Kitsilano. Another brother, Reg Jackson, established the first motorized delivery service in Vancouver.

In the daytime

The item is a reel of documentary film containing an impressionistic portrait of city life during a day off in the summertime, with poetic narration set opposite some very observant and intimate views of Vancouver and its inhabitants. These include numerous street scenes; departure of the passenger ferry "Hollyburn"; shots of and from Interurban railway and streetcars; sequences on Chinatown, Kitsilano Beach, Stanley Park, Victory Square, and the downtown waterfront; and a glimpse inside a typical beer parlour. The film received honourable mention in the amateur category at the 1950 Canadian Film Awards.

RCMP Musical Ride (b&w and colour). Airport (Abbotsford?): airplanes, trick flying, parachuting. Parade (appears to be in Vancouver): floats, bands, etc.

Suite two : a memo to Oscar

The item is a duplicate print of an experimental film by Dorothy Burritt and Stanley Fox. It was produced as a gift to Dorothy Burritt's husband, filmmaker Oscar Burritt (who was working in Toronto at the time) and is an offbeat study of life at their Vancouver apartment -- suite 2, 1960 Robson Street. The camera explores the apartment and the household memorabilia, and Dorothy is seen sitting for a portrait by painter Peter Bortkus. Later some friends drop by for a screening of Sacha Guitry's film "Pearls of the Crown", followed by a party. Among the guests are Moira Armour, film editor Maureen Balfe, UBC student Stanley Fox, photographer Peter Varley, and an unnamed figure wearing a bird costume. Most of the people shown would have been involved with the National Film Society of Canada (Vancouver Branch). "Suite Two" won honourable mention (amateur category) at the first Canadian Film Awards in 1949.
