Adventures of a farm girl in Canada in 1925 / Joan Nina Simpson

The file contains "Adventures of a farm girl in Canada in 1925", by Joan Simpson, with a forward by her god-daughter, June Knowles. It consists of four reminiscences about life on a cattle ranch and in a fruit growing area of British Columbia by a young English woman who spent a year or two in British Columbia in the early 1930s. Although both personal and geographical names have been changed, the ranch on which Miss Simpson worked was undoubtedly the Church Ranch at Big Creek in the Chilcotin district.

Prentice, James Douglas, 1861-1911. Gang Ranch; Manager, Western Canadian Ranching Company

Letter from Theodore Davie, May 24, 1894, replying to a letter from Prentice stating that Davie had threatened to withhold money set aside in the estimates to reimburse the Western Canadian Ranching Company for road building if Prentice ran as an opposition candidate. Davie denies the accusation but expresses surprise that Prentice should ally himself with a group tending towards "Socialism and communism", and points out that the money had been granted because the government thought of Prentice as a deserving friend.

Presented by Alison Prentice, Toronto, per the editors, BC Historical News, 1980.

Letters written to Hugh Booth Lee

The series consists of photocopies of letters written from British Columbia to Hugh Booth Lee of Whitchurch, Shropshire, England, 1913-1914. Most of the letters were written by Hugh's mother, Mrs. Agnes Nash, during a visit she made to her children, Nessie (Mrs. Norman Lee), of Hanceville, Tom, of Alexis Creek, and Alfred, of Nicola and Alberni. The collection also contains letters from Tom and Nessie Hugh. Mrs. Nash was in the Chilcotin from March to May 1913, at Nicola from July to September, and in Victoria, where she lived with Nessie and Norman Lee, from October 1913 to June 1914. Mrs. Nash was very sociable and the letters are full of news of people met in B.C. and of the family in England.
