Financial, construction and employment records

The series consists of bound office record books (journals and ledger books), which record the following: employees time worked on projects, specific construction projects or “jobs,” salary and payroll records, cheques paid out, ledgers organized by account holders, bank books, monthly time books, and annual statistics reports. The series also consists of a radio script and event program concerning ship launchings.

Star Shipyard (Mercers) Ltd. records

The series consists of general correspondence, work record files (including construction, repair and refit contracts), financial reports, ledgers, ship plans and the logs of the "Eva," a tug owned by the Mercer brothers.

The finding aid lists files concerning construction contracts, indicating vessels with their construction number, vessel name, type and owner.

Photographs in the series were transferred to Visual Records accessions 198105-6 and 197912-38. Ship plans were transferred to Map accessions M13846 and M13954.

The series consists of photographs, dating from 1910 to 1970, and a small amount of accompanying textual material, including relevant newspaper and magazine clippings, event invitations and printed programs regarding ship launching ceremonies. The photos are black and white, with a very small number of colour prints.

The subject matter of the images includes: ship exteriors and interiors, construction and repair, views of the shipyard, workers, owners, launching/christening ceremonies, dignitaries, and the New Westminster and Vancouver waterfronts.

The photographers include but are not limited to: The Stride Studios, New Westminster; Croton Studio; Royal Canadian Naval Photographs; RCAF; Dept. of National Defence; and Commercial Illustrators Ltd.

The two components of MS-3231 are Visual Records accessions 198105-006 and 197912-038, and were transferred from Series MS-0448.

The main body of records is in accession 198105-006, the Gordon Mercer accession (donated by Star Shipyard owner Gordon Mercer in 1975). 126 of these photographs were catalogued as HP089077-HP89144 and HP089395-HP89452. The accession file includes a document which gives detailed descriptions of most of these images at the item level -- information which was supplied by Gordon Mercer in October 1982.

The series also consists of accession 197912-038, a photo album of 66 black and white detailed images of different phases of ship construction at the Star Shipyard. The photos were taken by The Stride Studios of New Westminster. One image is an aerial view of the plant labelled with: “Aero Surveys Limited, Sea Island Airport, Vancouver.” The photographs were catalogued as HP086030 to HP086089.

The fonds consists of the records of Star Shipyard (Mercers) Ltd. and includes textual records, photographs, architectural plans and drawings, and audio recordings. The records date from just after the founding of the company in 1908 until it was sold in 1970, however most of the records date from after the late 1930s.

Textual records include general correspondence, financial and employment records, and records concerning contracts for the construction, repair and refit of ships. A large number of photos were produced by the Stride Studios of New Westminster.

Shipyard records which consist of Dept. of Public Works (Canada) specifications, contract and plans (3) for the construction of a sternwheeler snag boat to replace the Samson IV. Also included is a 1934 bill of sale for Public Works sailing scow (reg. 152681) to Star Shipyard. Plans transferred to Map Collection (accession 19077C).
