The item is a reversal print of a documentary made between 1941 and 1946. It depicts the coho and spring salmon trolling industry of Vancouver Island's west coast. Includes footage of boats, types of tackle, catching and cleaning fish, buying stations, delivery to the wharf, etc. The packer "Co-Operator II" is shown.

Out-footage from various BC Government Travel Bureau films, including "Vancouver Island" (the 1941-1942 version); Okanagan footage from "A Date with British Columbia" (1957-1958) and "Kootenay Lake Holiday" (1960-1961). Includes sequence at hunters' campsite on Dease Lake, with hunters displaying and packing trophies and filming amateur movies; lumber truck boarding lake ferry; recreational activities (boating); aerial views; sawmilling; sternwheeler snagging logs [possibly the "Essington" on the Skeena River?]; B.C. Provincial Police officer on horseback; totem poles at Kitwanga and/or Kitwancool; regatta.

The Fraser Valley, British Columbia

The item is an answer print of a travelogue film from 1947-1948. It shows the Fraser Valley from White Rock to Hope, via Vancouver and the Trans-Canada Highway. The film includes footage of: King George VI Highway; White Rock; Peace Arch Park; Canada customs inspection; dairy, poultry and vegetable farming; brickmaking; Stave falls power plant; the Fraser Valley Union Library; Chilliwack Cherry Carnival Parade; Chilliwack Air Show; fishing on Vedder River; Harrison Lake resort; etc. Also shows use of an Avro Anson (registration CF-EKM) to transport live baby chicks by air, and use of a Republic Seabee seaplane to fly in to Chilliwack Lake for an afternoon's fishing.

The loon's necklace

The item is a composite print of an Ethnographic film from 1948. It is a celebrated short based on a First Nations legend, re-enacted by actors wearing Salish carved wooden masks from the collection of the National Museum of Man. The legend is set in the Nicola Valley, but filmed in a surrealistic studio representation of the area. Also released in German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish versions.

Northward bound

The item is an answer print of a travelogue film made between 1949 and 1954. It shows the BC section of the Alaska Highway, from Dawson Creek to Lower Post on the Yukon Border. The narrator is supposedly a local "character," making his first trip up the highway.

Eyes west! -- to British Columbia

The item is a composite print of a promotional film from 1951. "In this film we quickly see B.C.'s industrial might unfold -- paper, cellulose, mining, oil pipeline, and finally highways and happier living." (BC Electric film catalogue, 1959)

Peachtime in the valley : Penticton, British Columbia

The item is a film print of a travelogue made in 1951. It depicts the Hope-Princeton Highway and the Penticton Peach Festival and Rodeo. Footage includes: Manning Park and highway scenes en route to Penticton; Peach Festival parade (including girls' pipe band); crowning of Queen Val Vedette; festival midway; harness racing. Rodeo events include pattern riding, bronco riding, calf roping, bulldogging steers and bull riding. Also lake shore and orchard scenes. BC highway construction is promoted in the commentary.

Lady of the lake

The item is a film travelogue, made in 1953. It shows the city of Kelowna and the 1953 Kelowna Regatta. Scenes include car ferry on Okanagan Lake; city streets and park; beach and water sports; Premier W.A.C. Bennett; Regatta parade; nighttime pageant at Aquatic Pool with synchronized swimming, square dancing and crowning of the Lady of the Lake; swimming races at the pool; speedboat and hydroplane races; men's diving competition. The Lady of the Lake introduces and closes the film.

Victoria

The item is a negative film reel of out-takes from ca. 1954. It shows various scenes around Victoria, including: Thunderbird Park with cedar log [being prepped for carving?]; Inner Harbour with ships; view from ship entering Inner Harbour; war canoe race on the Gorge [?]; country road; recreational activities.

Forward : out-takes

The item consists of four reels of film out-takes, made from 1954 to 1955. They contain footage shot for a film on the importance of British Columbia's secondary industries. The activities shown in the completed film included the manufacture of tissue paper, wire rope, pipe, tin cans, plastic bags, lighting fixtures, electric signs, power saws, broom handles, galvanized pails, ceramics, clothing, drill bits, and plasterboard; food canning; sugar refining; hydro-electric power developments; electronics; television (CBC studio); motion picture production and film processing and construction.

Legend of the west

The item consists of a composite print of a travelogue made 1965-1966. It contains scenic and recreational attractions of the Cariboo-Chilcotin, from Cache Creek and Lillooet to Barkerville. Footage includes: Pacific Great Eastern trains in the Lillooet-Fraser River area; Lillooet First Nations dip-net fishing and drying salmon along the Fraser; the "Maggie Mine" and The Chasm, natural geological formations; sequence showing a dude ranch (the Flying U Guest Ranch?) with guests on a trail ride; trout fishing at Tatla, Nimpo and Puntzi Lakes in the Chilcotin; cowboys on a cattle round-up; Williams Lake Stampede parade and rodeo; flora and fauna (including wild flowers, waterfowl, beaver, moose, deer, mule deer, eagle); boating on Bowron Lakes; sequence about Barkerville (pre-restoration), showing old buildings and a service at St. Saviour's Church.

Includes footage of: recreational activities in and around Bowron Lake; Barkerville; Williams Lake Stampede rodeo events; wildlife; Lillooet First Nations fishing for and drying salmon.

The road home : out-takes

The item is a reel of out-takes from the film "The Road Home", made in 1955-1956. It shows post-polio treatment at a rehabilitation centre in Vancouver and at Vancouver General Hospital including men and women in wheelchairs playing basketball and volleyball; occupational therapy; hospital wards and cafeteria. Also shows the transportation of polio patients from outlying areas by the RCAF.

Vancouver Island : British Columbia's island playground : 1956-1957 version

The item is a composite print of a travelogue made in 1956-1957. It is a revised version of the film and incorporates footage from the 1941-1942 and 1951 versions, as well as new footage. New footage includes cars coming off the ferry in Victoria's inner harbour; dockside scenes, including a freighter loading; a Trans-Canada Airlines aircraft arriving at Patricia Bay airport; Malahat Summit scenery; marina and fishing scenes; downtown Duncan and local logging operations; the John Hart hydro-electric plant; etc.
