The letters are from James Anderson at Fort Simpson or in the district, and are addressed to Eden Colville, Sir George Simpson and other Hudson's Bay Company officers. The letters are indexed and discuss affairs at the fort.

The file consists of a handwritten transcript and a typescript of Anderson's journal entries from May 28 to September 3, 1855. The journal entries document Anderson's journey from Fort Simpson to the mouth of "the Great Fish River" via Great Slave Lake and the MacKenzie River. The journey was undertaken in order to search for the expedition of Sir John Franklin.
