Miscellaneous photographs of Victoria, Esquimalt, Saanich, and ships

The photographs consist of collected miscellaneous photographs. A file list is available with a complete listing. Broadly, the photographs depict scenes in Victoria, Esquimalt, and Saanich, pioneer groups and families, and shipping. There are a few photographs of the Chinese cemetery and Chinese missionaries. A number of the ship photographs are identified as being created by Jones and Company (or Jones Brothers). Some of the photographs were originally packaged in boxes and envelopes labeled with “A.H. Maynard.” The eighth box was stamped "F.V. Longstaff - Major Longstaff" and some of the negatives appear to feature Longstaff's handwriting.

Journeys of James Butterfield, 1836-1898

The file is a transcript copy of "Journeys of James Butterfield, 1836-1898," being the reminiscences of his early life in Maine, travels to and life in California and Hawaii, and trip to New Westminster, to take a job building a railroad from the Stikine River to Teslin Lake. Contains short biographical sketch of Jessie (Holt) Butterfield of New Westminster.

Ann Blinkhorn records

The file consists of one letter from Catherine Penrice in England (1866) enquiring about friends in Victoria. It also contains 12 pages of poetry of a religious nature written or transcribed by Mrs. Blinkhorn (1840).

Bill of lading and land receipt

The file consists of two items: a bill of lading for the steamer Beaver, under Captain William Brotchie, to ship goods from Fort Nisqually to Camosun, dated 20 June 1843 and a receipt from the Vancouver Island Colonial Surveyor for 98 acres of land in Cowichan district, 1858.

Correspondence and other material

The file consists of letters to William Davis, a San Francisco businessman. The file contains two letters from George Abernethy (1847) of Oregon City regarding timber sales; one receipted invoice, Hudson's Bay Company, Honolulu (1847); one letter of thanks from James Alexander Forbes, Santa Clara (1846); one letter from James McKinlay, Montreal, Monterey, regarding transmission of money (1845).

Manuscript of sections of Hale's Ethnology and Philology

The file consists of manuscript of sections of the Philology part of Horatio Emmons Hale's, Ethnology and Philology with "Directions for printing", additional instructions and minor corrections throughout the manuscript, and a section (p 67-155) marked "Not to be printed: these pages contain only some of the notes from which the part beginning at page 219 ("The languages of North-Western America") has been written". Sections included are "The languages of North-Western America" (part); Sahaptin grammar; the Waiilaptu, Tshinuk and S. Kalapuya families; Synopsis; Jargon, Patagonia; Southern Africa; and Kamilarai, Wiradurei, English sentences from the Australian section. A list of the different sections of manuscript is filmed at start of microfilm.
