Footage. The Columbia Coast Mission boat "John Antle" (the third CCM vessel of that name) on patrol with Canon Alan D. Greene. Shot in the early 1950s when the "John Antle" was based at Pender Harbour, patrolling the Jervis Inlet area and the northern part of the Strait of Georgia. Footage of scenery, settlements and people encountered, and services performed by Canon Greene at various stops. Identifiable locales include Ballenas Light Station, Surge Narrows on Read Island [Tipton's Store], and the Canadian Red Cross Society's Outpost Hospital on Stuart Island. Also includes hospital interiors (ward, first aid, operation in progress); logging camp cookhouse interior; logging operations (felling tree with axe and crosscut saw); children; village scenes. The mission boat "Rendezvous" and a CN steamship (possibly the "Prince Rupert") also appear.

These are files of the Research Division of the British Columbia Hospital Insurance Service. In 1948 an "Act to provide for the Establishment of Hospital Insurance and Financial Aid to Hospitals" was passed. Accordingly, the B.C. Hospital Insurance Service was established as a third branch of the Department of Health and Welfare and tasked with administering the premium payment plan which provided hospital care benefits for acute illness at the standard ward level to residents of the province. The role of the B.C.H.I.S. quickly grew to include hospital financing, inspection, and advisory services related to hospital construction. The name of the branch changed from British Columbia Hospital Insurance Service to Hospital Programs in 1975, as part of a reorganization within the Ministry of Health. In the early years the B.C.H.I.S. was also responsible for the administration of the Welfare Institutions Licensing Act (transferred to the Dept. of Social Welfare in 1950) and the Provincial Infirmaries (transferred to the Health Branch in 1964). The Research Division was created in the second year of operation of the B.C.H.I.S. In the annual report of BCHIS for 1950 the responsibilities of the Research Division are listed as "this branch of the Service supplied all statistics necessary to the Service, which included compilation of progress and annual reports, surveys, and other information". In the 1951 annual report this description is broadened slightly, "maintained monthly progress reports, compiled statistics concerning hospitalization experience, and conducted special studies on matters related to the Service". There are two series of files, one series containing correspondence with individual hospitals and one series containing subject files. The first series in this unit, the bulk of these files, relate to individual hospitals and contain correspondence of the division with the hospitals, news releases of the ministry relating to the hospital, reports of the division relating to the individual hospitals and other research material relating to individual hospitals. The bulk of this series is from 1953-1965, with some material as late as 1975. The second series of files are subject files of the Research Division on such topics as rehabilitation, mental health, indian affairs, morbidity, social welfare, and pediatrics. The series consists of records created by the Dept. of Health Services and Hospital Insurance between 1953 and 1965.
They contain the executive files of the Minister, Eric Martin and include files relating to Woodlands, the Provincial Mental Hospital, Valleyview, Dellview, Skeenaview, Tranquille, the Crease Clinic, various mental health centres, and legislation relating to mental health. The files also include monthly reports on the activities of the various branches of the Mental Health Services for the years 1960-1964.

Subject files of the Hospital Consultation and Inspection Division and records relating to the Provincial Adult Care Licensing Board, the Hospital Rate Board, the Radiological Advisory Committee and the Planning Group. The contents of Box 23, file 3-13 were housed in separate labelled binders.

The series consists of three files on hospital accreditation compiled by F.C. Bell between 1955 and 1959. The files include correspondence and survey information regarding hospital accreditation.

These records document the activities of the Hospital Consultation Division, including its liaison with and supervision of public hospitals throughout the province. The records are arranged alphabetically by the geographic location of each institution, from Abbotsford to Williams Lake. Records relating to each hospital are separated into files for general correspondence (1964-1978), reports (1955-1976), functional program (1971-1978) and equipment (1974-1978). Some hospital records include additional files relating to special subjects such as disaster plans or controversial issues.

There are two series of files: MS-3092 consists of 510 case files for patients treated with hallucinogenic drugs at Hollywood Hospital, with opening file dates from 1957 to 1968. As some patients returned for later treatments some of the material may date from the early 1970's. These files were kept in a separate series from Hollywood's other patient case files.

Most of the files contain correspondence and an autobiography recording answers to questions about early childhood, family relations, sexual history, mental health issues and problems with addictions. A standard file would also include a Minnesota Personality Profile, an analysis by a psychiatrist, a medical report on overall health, and a detailed log of the drugs that were administered and the patient's behavior while undergoing the hallucinogenic experience. Patients were also encouraged to prepare a report on their experience after the session, and to evaluate its benefit.

The case files are arranged in ascending order by patient case file number. Box 1 of MS-3092 contains index cards, filed alphabetically by patient name. Based on this index, more than 800 patients were treated with hallucinogenic drugs at the Hollywood Hospital, but only two thirds of the files have been located and transferred.

MS-3093 contains alphabetically-arranged index cards (Boxes 121 and 122) and selected patient case files for Hollywood Hospital patients who were NOT treated with hallucinogens (10 boxes). The majority of the patients were treated for alcoholism. MS-3093 patient files were created between 1944 and 1975.

The files consist mainly of Patient Identification Sheets, Physician's Orders and Progress Notes, Clothing and Article Lists, Laboratory Reports, History and Physical Examinations, Admission-Separation Records, and Consent for Treatment forms. Approximately 8% of the original 15,000 files were selectively retained, based on their year of file closure.

The series consists of files created by the Dept. of Health Services and Hospital Insurance, Office of the Minister relating to the Hospital Insurance Service Branch. The records were created between 1959 and 1965 and while the bulk of the files relate to specific hospital construction projects, there are also files relating to provincial infirmaries, legislation and other subjects.

The series consists of records documenting the operations and administration of hospitals in BC from 1959-1987. The records cover programs within individual hospitals, finance and construction, personnel, medical staff bylaws, rules and regulations, equipment and other topics. They also include accreditation surveys and results, hospital reviews, and reports by Ministry of Health staff on topics such as medical records. The records include policy precedents, lists of staff and administrators, and information on financial proceedings and grants. The records were created under the Hospital Act (RSBC 1979, c.176), the Hospital District Act (RSBC 1979, c.178), and the Hospital Insurance Act (RSBC, 1979, c. 180). They were created by the BC Hospital Programs Division and its predecessor, BC Hospital Insurance Service, both under the Ministry of Health.

The series is arranged by hospital or topic, then by date. The records include correspondence, reports, financial records, bylaws, project files, strategic plans, and policy documents. The records are classified under the one-time Hospital Programs operational files (schedule 880238).

In 1975 the name of the BCHIS was changed to Hospital Programs as part of a reorganization within the Ministry.

Files of J.W. Mainguy and P.M. Breel. Mainguy was the manager of the Consultation and Inspection Division of the BCHIS, later the Assistant Deputy Minister in charge of Hospital Insurance, 1972-1975. He was the original chairperson of the Planning Group, which was responsible for planning health care development in B.C. This accession includes his Planning Group files, 1966-1974, and the minutes of the Planning Group, 1965-1974. Breel was the Director of the Hospital Consultation and Inspection Division before being appointed Senior Director of Hospital Programs in 1976. This accession includes his subject and hospital files, 1974-1978.

Within the Planning Group files, the files for each regional hospital district include correspondence of the ministry with the local hospital board, letters from citizens, and intergovernmental memos.

These records comprise annual reports of public hospitals in British Columbia for 1969. The information contained in these reports was normally published by the British Columbia Government as the Report on Hospital Statistics and the Administration of the Hospital Act. The report was not published for 1969 so these records have been retained as the only source of the information.

These records are from the office of the Director of Hospital Construction and Inspection Division. They include minutes of the Planning Group (1974-1975), the BCHIS Management Group (1971-1974), Functional Program Review Committee (1970-1971), and the Radiological Advisory Council and Committee (1976-1979). The indexes to the Equipment Committee and the Rate Board minutes are included although the minutes are not.

Earlier minutes of the Planning Group (1965-1974) are catalogued under GR-2651.

The series consists of correspondence and other records of the executive director’s office, Hospital Programs, Ministry of Health. The correspondence is between members of the Health Programs executive team (executive director, regional directors, Assistant Deputy Minister, Deputy Minister, and Minister of Health) and regional hospitals or health care facilities in British Columbia. The correspondence documents routine business activities relating to hospital reviews, hospital programs, staffing levels, hospital expansion, hospital expenditures, operating budgets and other financial/funding issues, hospital complaint files, hospital annual reports, and regional hospital district matters. SUMMARY: "Between Ourselves" was a weekly series of hour-long radio programs that presented Canada to Canadians. It featured aspects of Canadian life in docudramas, plays, music, and interviews, originating fr;om different regions of Canada. The series ran from 1966 to 1979. This episode, "Beyond the Call", is the story of three Canadian Red Cross outpost hospitals in BC. Prepared and introduced by J.J.
