Photographs

The series is a photograph album created or acquired by Herbert Carmichael, sometime between 1897 and the early 1900s. It contains photographs of Victoria and area, particularly photos of Beacon Hill Park, Victoria Harbour and sailboats. There are also Vancouver Island photographs, including images of the Cowichan and Alberni areas and images taken on the mainland including Kootenays and coastal areas. There are a few photographs taken in Northern Island, Sault Ste. Marie and England. Most of the photographs have either stamped or penciled captions.

The item is a timber cruiser's logbook, apparently owned by Donald Alexander McPhee. The book contains sketch maps of Victoria Lumber and Manufacturing Company lots in the Cowichan and other South Vancouver Island districts with timber types noted.

Kenneth McKenzie family personal and business papers

The McKenzie Family collection consists of the business and personal papers of Kenneth McKenzie (1811-1874), his ancestors and descendants, including correspondence, notebooks, diaries, and other papers. It documents over one hundred and fifty years of family history. The collection is divided into those records relating to Vancouver Island (Boxes 1-19) and those relating to Scotland (Boxes 20-25). The Vancouver Island papers contain correspondence and documents pertaining to Lakehill Farm, the settlement of estates, official appointments, and other family matters. They also chronicle the organization and operation of Craigflower Farm and, to a lesser extent, the other farms operated by the Puget's Sound Agricultural Company on Vancouver Island. The Scottish papers document family events, relationships and property from 1779 to 1852. Included is an extensive record of the protracted settlement of the estate of William Blair (Boxes 22-23). William Blair was the father of Janet McKenzie (Blair).

Born in Edinburgh October 5, 1811, the son of Dr. Kenneth McKenzie (1786-1844) and Janet Blair (1784-1820), Kenneth McKenzie was raised and educated in the same city. Later he moved to his father's estate of Rentonhall, Haddingtonshire, East Lothian where he managed the operations. The estate was sold in 1851 and McKenzie, his wife Agnes Russell (1823-1897) and their six children emigrated to Vancouver Island in 1853. McKenzie had been hired by the Puget's Sound Agricultural Company to oversee the establishment and operation of Craigflower Farm near Victoria. In 1866 the family, now with eight children, moved to Lakehill Farm just north of Victoria. Kenneth McKenzie died there April 10, 1874. A comprehensive biography of Kenneth McKenzie by William R. Sampson is in the Dictionary of Canadian Biography, X, pp.477-479. A rough genealogy of the McKenzie Family is provided in the hardcopy version of the finding aid.

Vernon Llewellyn Denton records

Correspondence relating mainly to Simon Fraser and an atlas produced by Denton; notes and a typed manuscript relating to Simon Fraser, plus several copies of Fraser's 1806 and 1808 journals and letters 1806-1807. There are notes on the fur trade, early Vancouver Island, the Cariboo gold rush, Sir James Douglas, confederation and the Canadian Pacific Railway; and on Louis Riel and the Metis rebellions.

Bill of lading and land receipt

The file consists of two items: a bill of lading for the steamer Beaver, under Captain William Brotchie, to ship goods from Fort Nisqually to Camosun, dated 20 June 1843 and a receipt from the Vancouver Island Colonial Surveyor for 98 acres of land in Cowichan district, 1858.

Correspondence relating to the Royal Navy

This series contains reports and despatches between the Senior Naval Officer (Esquimalt, B.C.) & the Secretary of the Admiralty, Whitehall (London, Eng.). The correspondence includes letters from colonial governors and despatches from Deputy Adjutant General (B.C. militia district). The records also include lists of naval stores storekeepers' accounts, sketch maps of naval reserves and stations, and printed reports.

Colonial Office correspondence outward to Vancouver Island

Vancouver Island: Entry Books of Correspondence, 1849-1867, (C.O. 410, vols. 1-2). This unit consists of letter-book copies of despatches from the Secretary of State for the Colonies (i.e. the Colonial .Secretary) to the governors of Vancouver Island. Subject indexes appear at the end of the volumes. Original duplicate copies of these records are catalogued as C/AA/10.2/1. Other copies, but of inferior quality, may be found on microfilm reel B00004 (1).

Baptismal, marriage and burial church registers

The series consists of copies of British Columbia baptism, marriage and death registers created by churches that conducted the ceremonies. Currently only records (baptisms 1849-1899; marriages 1864-1903) of St. Andrews Cathedral, Victoria , are available.

Churches were required to submit their baptismal registers to the Vital Statistics Division in the 1940s so the registers could be microfilmed. Vital Statistics subsequently created an alphabetical index to the microfilmed registers, and a database was created from the index volumes with supplementary information from the microfilmed registers added to the entries. This information is searchable via the BC Archives Genealogy database. The microfilm copies of the original registers may include some additional information or context that was not included in the database.

Each bound volume was created by one church. Each entry corresponds with one ceremony, but may involve multiple individuals. The entries within each volume are ordered chronologically and may be numbered. Every volume varies in the type and presentation of information included and may not be consistent throughout one volume. All entries include the date of the ceremony, name of individual(s) involved in the ceremony, and the name of the priest who conducted the ceremony.

Baptism register entries may also include name of child, date of birth, place of birth, sex of child, name and surname of father, name and maiden name of mother, residence of parents, profession of parents, religion of parents, name and surname of grandparents, religion of grandparents, and name and surname of godparents.

Marriage register entries may also include name and surname of groom, name and maiden name of bride, age of bride, age of groom, name and surname of their parents, name and surname of witnesses present, religion of named individuals, place of birth, and signatures of parties involved.

Death register entries may also include: death dates, cause of death, age at death, location of internment and information about the funeral ceremony.

Indigenous people are included in the registers (as Indians or Sauvages). Some Indigenous names are included. Many baptisms of Indigenous people were in groups and may only consist of a list of the Christian names the priest gave to the baptized individuals. Tribal or community affiliations may be included.

Some entries include the geographical location that the ceremony took place. This location may vary from the location of the church, as some priests travelled quite widely to conduct ceremonies.

Henry Labouchere, first Baron Taunton was born in 1798, obtained his early education at Winchester and received a B.A. from Christ Church, Oxford in 1821. In 1828 he received his M.A. He was first elected as a liberal Member of Parliament in 1826 and served in a variety of posts including Lord of the Admiralty (1832); Master of the Mint, privy councillor, and Vice-President of the Board of Trade (1835); and Undersecretary of War and the Colonies (1839). He was appointed President of the Board of Trade in Lord Melbourne's cabinet, 1939-1841, and served in the same capacity under Lord John Russell's ministry, 1847-1852. He became Secretary of State for the Colonies under Lord Palmerston from 1855-1858 and it is to this period of his career that this collection of papers pertains.

Robert Brown papers

Robert Brown (1842-1895) was a naturalist who took part in several expeditions and in 1864 he was appointed Commander of the Vancouver Island Exploring Expedition. The records consist of the journal and catalogue compiled while botanist for the British Columbia Botanical Expedition, 1863-66; journals kept as commander, Vancouver Island Exploring Expedition [VIEE], 1864-65; memoir on the geography of Vancouver Island, 1868; The land of the Hydahs, 1866; journals kept by A. Barnston, J. Buttle, T. Lewis, R. McDonald, J.Meade, F. Whymper during the VIEE in 1864 [vols. 1 and 2]; Vancouver Island Exploration Committee papers, including minute book, 1864-1865, correspondence, applications, bills and receipts, orders and reports issued by Brown; private correspondence, 1865-1895 [vol. 3]. Included in volumes 4 and 5 are transcripts of the VIEE journals, and some transcripts of Robert Brown's material. Two items were transferred to the BC Archives Library. A copy of volume 1, file 7 is catalogued as NWp 580 B862c ( previously NWp 581.9711 E96). A portion of the Catalogue of animals, plants, seeds, minerals collected by Robert Brown (from volume. 1, file 11), published in The Farmer, May 16, 1866 is catalogued as NWp 580 B862c. Both items were filmed by the Canadian Institute for Historical Microreproductions (CIHM no. 16844 and no. 16588 respectively). The originals could not be located as of October and August 2010. The Robert Brown records were microfilmed by the BC Archives in 1986. At that time, volume 1, files 7 and 9 were noted as missing.

Epitome of land sales

The series consists of books containing land sales records for Victoria, Esquimalt, Metchosin and Sooke districts. The series may include but is not limited to, land sales registers, land sales records, lists of sections and lots, sums deposited for lands and town lots, and land sales account ledgers. The names of purchases, district, section, payment in sterling and payment dates may be recorded.

The series consists of a surveying notebook (cover labelled "Trigonometl. Memda."). It contains 51 pages of sketches, instructions, notes, drafts of letters, etc. covering Victoria, Esquimalt, Nanaimo and Metchosin districts.

Colonial correspondence : correspondence of the Government of the Colony of Vancouver Island, 1849-1866 and of the Government of the Colony of British Columbia, 1858-1871

GR-1372 is an artificial series, created by the Provincial Archives of British Columbia in the 1920s and 1930s from records of the governments of the Colony of Vancouver Island (1849-1866), the Colony of British Columbia (1858-1866) and the United Colony of British Columbia (1866-1871). The records, consisting of correspondence inward to and among officials and departments, were originally organized more or less chronologically as records of the department or agency to which they were sent, e.g. Colonial Secretary, Attorney-General, Commissioner of Land and Works, etc. Letters when received were logged into a register and assigned sequential numbers with the last two numbers of the year appended, creating the file number, e.g. 105/62. Some of these registers still exist, e.g. GR-0625. The correspondence was often accompanied by enclosures such as reports, sketches and maps which were considered part of the file.

Sometime during the 1920s and 1930s, Archives staff undertook to re-organize these records into a single alphabetical series organized primarily by the name of the originating office or sender (road tolls and petitions are notable exceptions). Formerly separate records were intermingled and the original order was lost. The records were indexed using new file numbers assigned for that purpose. These are the F numbers written in red crayon on the records. Starting with the number 1, each folder of records in the new alphabetical sequence was assigned a number as well as the individual files (items) within that folder, e.g. F33/1.

It appears that later insertions into the alpha sequence, after the initial assignment of numbers, were dealt with by using letters (e.g. F85a, F85b), or a number in parentheses (e.g. F79(1), F80a(1)). When an F file required more than one folder, either letters were added to subsequent folders, (e.g. F102, F102a, F102b) or numbers in parentheses were used (e.g. F142b(1), F142b(2)). The F numbers on the documents, however, were not affected by the change in numbering as they formed one continuous sequence (e.g. F102, files 1-9; F102a, files 10-22; F102b, files 23-30b).

Some of the correspondence was transcribed by Archives staff. These typed transcripts are either in the file folders together with the originals or in a separate file folder following the file folder with the originals. Most of the transcripts were not microfilmed and consequently do not appear on the microfilm reels. The records were microfilmed 1978-1980.

The fonds consists of photographic extracts from a log kept by Midshipman James Ferris Prowse whilst aboard the H.M.S. Thetis under Captain Augustus L. Kuper. There are 90 negatives (2 negatives per page) and 42 print copies.

The printed extracts are those which have any mention of any place or point near Vancouver Island or Queen Charlotte's Island (Haida Gwaii), or of any item which might be of interest. These items are marked in red pen on the right hard edge of the photographic prints. The period covered is from the arrival of the ship outside the straits of San Juan de Fuca on May 22, 1852 to the time it sailed from Esquimalt Harbour for England on January 22, 1853.

Vancouver Island Supreme Court of Civil Justice bench book

Series consists of one bench book for Colony of Vancouver Island Supreme Court of Civil Justice civil and criminal cases heard by Judge David Cameron at Fort Victoria from November 1853 to January 1856 and one criminal case at Nanaimo in May 1854. It also includes civil cases heard at Victoria in the Inferior Court of Civil Justice in 1856. The volume additionally served as a criminal record book for 1853, a cause book for 1856, and a Registrar's record book for 1853. It opens with a notation that Judge Cameron's commission was read and that he took his seat on 6 October 1853. The Registrar also notes that he received the court seal from Judge Cameron.

Land sales registers

The series consists of registers of land sales in Victoria (1854-1858), North and South Saanich (1860), and other Vancouver Island districts (1860-1865). The series includes records of lands sold or auctioned. The lot and section number, name of grantee, number of acres, payee, and dates of payment are recorded.

Vancouver Island land registers

Bright, Cedar, Cranberry, Mountain, Nanoose, Nanaimo, and Wellington Land Districts, all on Vancouver Island, land registers, superceded 1928 (i.e. no further entries were made after 1928). The registers list the land in numerical order, usually by Range and Section, but occasionally by lot. There can be up to three methods of land description within one Land District. Information may include the name of purchaser, dates and number of certificate issued (including Crown Grants), dates and amounts of payments, and reference numbers to correspondence files and field books. The volume contains an index to districts by page number, and an alphabetical index to grantees.

The series consists of books of receipts for sales and sub-sales of land on Vancouver Island. The series includes receipts for land purchased in Victoria, Esquimalt, Metchosin, Lake, Highland, South and North Saanich, and other districts on north Vancouver Island and sub-sale receipts for south Vancouver Island.

This index covers most - but not all - files from 1 to 1212a (A - Na) in GR-1372 - correspondence inward to Vancouver Island and British Columbia colonial government officials. The indexing was done on cards, by name of sender, recipient and subject. It was never completed. Files 1212b - 1939 (Na-Z), and some correspondence in files 1-1212a have not been indexed.

Each index card provides the file number, and often a secondary number to indicate the specific item within that file e.g. F123 6 The numbers were written in red crayon on the first page of each document. The index also includes cards for records initially meant to be part of a Hudson's Bay Company correspondence collection and are designated as H.B.Co. files. This collection was abandoned and the records made part of separately catalogued records such as the Donald Ross papers.
