Vernon County Court process books

The series consists of one unindexed process book dating from 1913 to 1916 and two process index books. The indexes appear to be for much later records and likely date to the 1950s. A typical entry shows the date received, plaint number, plaintiff, defendant, nature of process, amount, court issued from, name of solicitor, date of return, nature of return and remarks.

The series consists of 19 volumes of water rights record books created between 1862 and 1944 by the Government Agent at Vernon, B.C.

The record books includes volumes of water licences, grants and indentures arranged by various licence or grant numbers for the Osoyoos district. The earliest volumes were used for multiple purposes and record fees paid for various purposes as well as additional information about land purchases and pre-emption claims.

Riverview Hospital historical collection

This series consists of a variety of records created by various provincial mental health institutions from 1872 to 2008. Records relate to the administration and operation of Riverview Hospital and related mental health facilities at the Essondale site in Coquitlam, as well as other facilities across the province. These mental health institutions include: Victoria Asylum, New Westminster Provincial Asylum (later Public Hospital for the Insane or Provincial Hospital for the Insane), Home for the Aged Coquitlam (later Valleyview), Home for the Aged Terrace (later Skeenaview), Home for the Aged Vernon (later Dellview), Crease Clinic, Colony Farm, Colquitz, Woodlands School, Tranquille and other medical facilities.

The names and administrative structure of these institutions changed over time. Mental health functions were originally part of the Provincial Secretary’s mandate; they were transferred to Mental Health Services when it was created in 1950.

These government records were collected by the Riverview Historical Society and include a wide variety of subject matter and media. This includes subjects such as: early development of the Essondale lands and Colony Farm; the construction and expansion of the facility; admissions, transfers, and discharges of patients; administration of patient care; administration of therapy programs; patient and staff recreation; staff and nurse training; operation of the audiovisual department; library services; research into new medical and therapeutic practices; research by staff regarding mental health practices at Riverview and further afield; community involvement; volunteer activity; policy development; the redevelopment of the Riverview lands; general administration; and, administration of other services at the site such as postal, food, laundry, banking, transportation and safety services.

Records from the Vernon Government Agent office

This series consists of various records transferred from the Vernon Government Agent's office. Many of the records were created by predecessor Government Agents who worked in Yale, Osoyoos or other parts of the Okanagan District before an Agent was stationed in Vernon. The majority of the records are tax assessment rolls for the Okanagan District from 1880-1884. Other records include applications for the sale of unsurveyed land and pre-emption records; reference material likely from the sessional papers, including bills; cofferdam contract; and a statement of collectors of revenue; and an indexed register of collected taxes.

Mechanics’ and woodsmen’s liens

The series consists of ledgers of woodsmen’s and mechanic’s liens registered in the Vernon county court between 1890 and 1949. No index is available for the woodsmen’s liens, and only a partial index is available for the mechanics’ liens. Typical entries include information on the name and place of residence of claimants, as well as a description of the material in question, the dates that work took place, the amount claimed, and the name of the individual against whom the claim is lodged.

Mechanics’ liens were issued in accordance with the Mechanics’ Lien Act, 1891 (c. 23 SBC 1891). The act enabled labourers, sub-contractors, and contractors to claim a lien for the value of the work. Woodsmen’s liens were issued in accordance with the “Woodmen’s Lien for Wages Act” (c. 58, SBC 1895).

The granting of letters probate represents one step in probating the estate of a deceased individual, and grants authority to the executor or executrix to proceed with administering the estate.The majority of the records were filled out on Court forms 161 and 162. Wills are not annexed. The records are arranged chronologically by grant date.

There are no indexes to the grants specifically, but the grants themselves could be used as an index to probate records if no other index was available. The number of the probate to which the grant applies has been written at the top of each form.

Vernon County Court naturalization records

The series consists of registers of naturalization indexes, as well as of one register of naturalization certificates, oaths of residence, and oaths of allegiance. The records were created and managed by the Vernon County Court between 1893 and 1973. Index registers typically provide applicants’ names, addresses, occupations, and nationalities, as well as the date of application filing, date of naturalization hearing, whether the application was approved or rejected, the date the papers and certificate were sent, the certificate number and any other remarks. Naturalization records 583 to 638 include multiple naturalization forms providing details of name, previous residence, current residence, occupation, and length of time spent residing in Canada.

Volume one does not include an index, and several files are noted to be “from Vancouver registry.” Volumes two and three have indexes. Volume two has two separate indexes: a large index at the front of the volume and a smaller separate index tucked in the front cover of the volume. These two indexes have overlapping information, but some information may be unique to each index.

The series consists of orders issued by the Supreme Court in Vernon between 1901-1930 and 1958-1959. Researchers should note that orders for the period 1931 to 1957 are missing. Orders are the formal expression of the ruling of the court and judgements are the final orders issued in a case. Records relate to a variety of civil matters including divorces, bankruptcies, foreclosures, and some adoptions.

Microfilm reel B16147 contains volume 1 (May1901-November 1916) and volume 2 (October 1916-July 1920) of the orders. Container 831041-0001 contains original paper copies of orders as well as several indexes, although it is unclear to which orders these refer. They appear to index more than what was transferred in the box. When the records arrived at the Archives, they had been divided into folders based on year, and are arranged in rough chronological orders. Records relating to the same case can be found across several folders. The paper records also contain a small number of interfiled judgments.
