Young Women's Christian Association (Victoria, B.C.) minutes

Minutes of meetings of the board of directors. The Victoria branch of the Y.M.C.A. was formed in 1892 from a group of church women engaged in weekly bible studies, its first president and major impetus being Miss Edith Carr. Activities soon expanded into work with homeless girls and fund raising projects to provide community services for young women. Not long afterwards the Y.W.C.A. acquired its first paid officer and first premises on Government St., then moved to a flat over Shotbolt's Drugstore on Johnson St. where a boarding house was operated on a small scale. Eventually, the association took over the old Protestant Orphan's Home (Annex) on Courtney St., until the lean years before the war forced closure; the Y.W.C.A. remained dormant till 1916. In that year the association was reactivated, moving three times in the years that followed, finally back into the Courtney St. Annex. During the war years the association was active in community service, even providing girls for farm labour. As a result of laborious fund-raising efforts through the 1920s, a new Y.M.C.A. building was erected and opened in October 1927, providing a home for girls and recreational facilities. Other women's groups used the new building, too, with club and activities groups proliferating after 1935. The depression years 1934-1939 saw new responsibilities, as the association provided unemployment relief for girls, leadership training, study groups, health and recreation activities, household and religious training, and vocational training. The war enlarged the scope of the Y.W.C.A., as the association provided group hospitality programs and facilities for service men and women. The years after the war brought continued expansion of existing services such as the ever-active Traveler's Aid program, in operation since the early 1900s. The necessity for expansion into better facilities was planned in the 1950s, and a commonality of interests, as well as a need for economy, was seen by both the Victoria Y.W.C.A. and Young Men's Ch ristian Association. In January of 1961, therefore, the two associations were amalgamated with a joint Board of Directors, a new constitution and plans for a new, larger building, which was constructed on Y.M.C.A. property at Quadra and Courtney Streets and occupied by both Y.s in 1965. The records consist of the minutes of regular and special meetings of the Y.W.C.A. Board of Directors, Victoria Branch, from 1910 to 1951 arranged chronologically in ten (10) volumes, seven bound and three ring binders. Within the minute books are items related to the business of the minutes. These include lists of board members, officers, and committees; records of attendance for board members, various special reports on association activities; clippings, and other items. In almost all cases, these items form part of the body of the minutes and are incorporated in them.

Yale, Lytton, and Spences Bridge land and mining records, and government agent correspondence

  • GR-3751
  • Series
  • 1864-1890

The series consists of assorted pieces of correspondence, notes and petitions created between 1864 and 1890 in the Yale, Lytton, and Spences Bridge areas of British Columbia. The records appear to have been accrued by different government agents and Assistant Commissioners of Lands and Works, including W.C. Berkeley, W. Teague, F.S. Hussey, and A. T. Bushby. The records deal with a variety of issues, but are mainly centered around land and mining rights, including applications for the pre-emption of land. The series also includes some letters that appear to be personal in nature, as well as some records tangentially relating to police or court business, including letters addressed to the Magistrate of Yale Lytton District. The majority of the records in this series date from the early 1870s and are addressed to the government agent, a position which evolved due to the expanding responsibilities of the early gold commissioners.

In 2004, many of the records relating to court business were removed from accession G80-076 and placed in GR-2414. The direct relationship between these two sets of records is unclear, and records in GR-2414 were placed in folders based on the year of the record, with the result that the context of the records has been lost.

World War I Photographs

The World War I Photographs series contains images taken in British Columbia from 1914 to 1920 in relation to the Great War. These photos cover a range of topics. Most notable are photographs of troops’ departures, either by boat from Victoria’s CPR station at Inner Harbour or Victoria’s Rithet’s Wharf, or by train from CPR stations in Vancouver or Vernon. Soldiers who wished to order photos of themselves were photographed individually by Crocker and many of these portraits, though unidentified, feature largely in this collection. Following each Battalion’s inspection, Crocker also took official photographs of companies, drafts, platoons, officers, administrators and entire battalions that were published in the Colonist announcing their departures. Crocker’s images also cover more candid shots taken at the several military camps around B.C. These include Willows Camp (Victoria), Work Point Barracks (Esquimalt), Sidney Camp, Vernon Camp, Hastings Park Camp (Vancouver), Beacon Hill Park Camp (Victoria), Heal’s Rifle Range, and Clover Point Rifle Range. These photographs show soldiers (and sailors) training in shooting, bayonet fighting, team sports, and trench digging. They also reveal how soldiers lived at the camp, showing areas such as their sleeping quarters, dining facilities, and washing quarters.

The series also contains photographs that date after the signing of the armistice in 1918. These include photographs of the Canadian Siberian Expeditionary Force, several images of troops returning from Europe in 1919, the Peace Day Parade of 1919 and the repatriation of troops from the Chinese Labour Corps who passed through William Head, B.C. in 1920.
