Ogden family fonds

The fonds consists of records created by several members of Peter Skene Ogden's family between 1831 and 1864, and includes a file of material that was compiled in 1931 about Ogden. The bulk of the fonds includes material written or received by Peter Skene Ogden, although the fonds also includes correspondence and other records relating to his parents, Isaac Ogden and Sarah (Hanson) Ogden, his son, Peter Ogden, his nephew Michael Ogden, and his son-in-law, Archibald McKinlay. Much of the correspondence is personal in nature and documents Ogden's relationship with his family and the settling of his estate. The fonds also includes his appointments to Chief Trader and Chief Factor in the Hudson's Bay Company.

Metro family fonds

Series consists of photographs of the Metro family. Four of the photographs are large portraits that have been hand-painted (see item level descriptions for more detail). The other six photographs are photographic prints mounted on cardstock. Three of the photographs are exterior and interior views of the Kleanthes Metro's restaurant, Maryland Oyster and Chop House, located at 85 Government Street in Victoria, and the other three photographs are family portraits, however the individuals cannot be identified in all photographs. One of the family portraits is taken by Richard Maynard and another is taken by Hannah Maynard.

Walter F. Rushbrook fonds

The fonds consists of the personal records of Rev. Walter F. Rushbrook and includes a letter written by Rushbrook to his nephew, some news clippings, a letter written by Rushbrook to a Mr. Hume providing a biographical overview of Rushbrook's life, and a typed manuscript with handwritten corrections of a novel by Rushbrook entitled "The Trollers." By his own account, the novel is "semi-fictional" and details life on the Pacific coast. The fonds also includes 2 photographs of Rushbrook (one with the Northern Cross), one postcard of Port Essington ca. 1909, one photograph of totem poles (unknown location), and one photograph of unidentified individuals in a boat.

Ozzie Hutchings fonds

The fonds consists of records created or acquired by Ozzie Hutchings which document his activities in Anyox and Stewart B.C. The fonds includes two memoirs written by Hutchings, one about the history of Anyox, written in 1966 and one about the history of Stewart, written in 1972.

There are also 63 black and white photographs created or acquired by Hutchings in the 1920s and 1930s which mainly document the 1936 Skeena flood and its impact on Anyox and Terrace as well as snow slides photographs from the 1930s. In addition there are 27 black and white copy prints loaned by Hutchings for copying by the Provincial Archives in 1972. These prints show the town site of Anyox including the dam, the smelter and various fires.

Headed by Jean Jacques André (1932-2021) and his wife, Joan André, and later his daughter, Bianca Message, the family company planned and designed exhibits for museums, historical organizations, and cultural and visitor centres across North America and around the world. The fonds consists of 92 black and white 13 x 9 cm photographic prints of Victoria and area, taken by Frank Stanley Martin between 1956 and 1963. Most of the photographs are numbered from 1-77 (no number 38 or 76) with an additional 17 unnumbered prints. Most are identified on the back with the date and place and some include other information. This information may have been recorded by Martin. In several cases, his attributions as to street names may not be correct.

The photographs are mostly of Victoria streets and buildings and include the Post Office, Customs building, shops and offices, the Court house, street scenes, homes and apartment buildings. There are also a few photos of Beacon Hill Park, the Breakwater and Oak Bay.

The fonds consists of records relating to Indar Singh Gill and his family, and document his private, religious, and social life. The records include four different Sikh prayer books, a diary in which Gill recorded the family's basic vital information, some business and financial records, and the passports of Gill and his wife, Bhagwant Kaur. Kaur's passport documents the immigration of her and their oldest children from India to Canada in 1938. The fonds also contains 20 photographs of the Gill family.

The fonds consists primarily of the professional records of Bill Sloan, and document his career in the forestry industry—especially as it related to land management for Canadian Pacific and the Esquimalt and Nanaimo Railway. Many of the records appear to have been collected by Sloan either because of his personal interest in the topic or for his professional work, and as such, many of the records fall outside of the time frame of Sloan’s professional career.

The fonds consists of copies of photographs created or acquired by William Henry Trewolla (W.H.T.) Olive during his time in the Klondike gold fields and Atlin, B.C. from 1897 to 1904. The fonds also includes two copies of his memoir of the time, written in 1937.

The 20 black and white photographs appear to have been in a photo album which was probably photographed by the Archives staff around 1939. Copy prints were subsequently printed from the negatives. There are images of Atlin and Discovery B.C.; several have captions or identifying marks written on the original print. At least one of these was taken by A.C. Hirschfeld. There are also two images of Skagway, Alaska, apparently attributed to Case & Draper.

There are two copies of Olive's memoirs, copy 1 has the title "Trail of '98, memoirs of W.H.T. Olive" and copy 2 has the title "W.H.T. Olive : Yukon reminiscences".

West Coast Development Company collection

The collection consists of records relating primarily to the West Coast Development Company, which aimed to develop land, located near Clo-oose on the west coast of Vancouver Island, into a resort destination. The company often used the tagline—Canada’s Greatest Pleasure Resort—interchangeably with its proper name. The records include those relating to the company act and shareholder reports, share certificates held by J. Alfred Tougas, land purchase records and lists of individuals who have purchased lots, correspondence, maps of the development, promotional material, and city guides for Vancouver, Victoria, and Edmonton. Tougas’ name appears on many of these records.

The collection also consists of notes and research files compiled by the donor, some of which relate to the West Coast Development Company records. Included in this file are two photographs, possibly of J.A. Tougas. There are records relating to a previous donation to the RBCM (1989) as well (see Associated Materials note below). There is also a file containing four photographs which are not directly related to the West Coast Development Company, but two of which depict scenes near Clo-oose and Nitinat River.

The fonds consists of records created or acquired by Wallace in the course of his life as a teacher, public servant and retired member of the community.

The records reflect events held across the province in celebrations of the 4 centennials in British Columbia in 1958, 1966, 1967, and 1971.

The records are primarily photograph albums or scrapbooks and were arranged by Wallace as volumes in chronological order.

A small number of records contain correspondence and personal records related to Wallace’s family history in addition to collected ephemera related to centennial celebrations.

Published material included in the donation has been transferred to the archives’ library.

Ray Goodwin fonds

The fonds consists of 128 photographs created by Ray Starr Goodwin. The photographs include pictures of Ray Goodwin and other members of the Goodwin and Green families of Kaslo, B.C. between ca. 1900 and 1920. There are images of Kaslo, of family members at home, at their summer camp at Beauty Beach on Kootenay Lake, camping at Greer's Beach (Kitsilano) and in Stanley Park, Vancouver.

There are also photographs of Kootenay Lake and other natural features around the Kootenay Lake and Kaslo area such as the Kokanee Glacier as well as photographs of steamboats, the Kaslo and Slocan Railway and various mines.

John Munro fonds

The fonds consists of personal and professional records of John Munro and document parts of his career with the British Columbia Provincial Police and his time as a jail warden. The records are comprised of 22 b&w family photographs (1909-1947), one patrol journal (1906-1907), and one scrapbook (1903-1917).

Munro was appointed to the British Columbia Provincial Police in 1902 in Vancouver, and was appointed Warden of the Nanaimo Gaol in 1910 and of the Saanich Prison Farm in 1914. He served as Constable at Colquitz in 1918. The patrol journal was kept while he travelled into the Cassiar District in search of Simon Gun-a-noot, who had been accused of murdering two white men. The journal was created partly as he carried out his professional duties, and partly for his own interest.

The scrapbook contains newspaper clippings and ephemera of famous cases or prisoners in his charge.

The 22 family photographs primarily show Munro and his wife and children on the grounds of the Saanich Prison Farm (now Wilkinson Road Jail). The photographs have been assigned the following numbers: J-00107; J-00108; J-00109; J-00110; J-00111; J-00112; J-00113; J-00114; J-00115; J-00116; J-00117; J-00118; J-00119; J-01028; J-01029; J-01030; J-01031; J-01032; J-01033; J-01034; J-01035; and J-01036.

Heddle family fonds

The fonds consist of records created and/or collected by Robert Heddle, a miner and farmer in Nelson, and his immediate family. The records predominantly cover the management and operation of the Juno and Venus mining claims in the Nelson area, which Heddle managed. Additionally, the records also consist of those related to Heddle’s agricultural endeavors, including beaver fur farming and fish farming. The records also indicate some of Heddle’s personal interests and activities, such an interest in meteors and his patent applications. Finally, there are also some records of family members, including his wife (Agnes Heddle) and his daughter (Thelma Moon, nee Heddle) and son-in-law, James Thomas Moon.

The records relating to the operations of the Venus-Juno mining claims cover many different aspects of mining operations, and the records include: annual general meeting records of the Venus Gold Mining Company; records documenting the price and shipping methods of ore; mining equipment; maps of the mining claims

The records relating to Heddle’s agricultural work consist of water claims, applications for road access with railways, soil and water analyses, and a crown grant purchase.

The fonds consists of 161 35 mm colour slides and four large slides predominantly depicting logging camps and equipment in British Columbia, between 1969-1987. The logging camps and locations captured in the slides are: Port McNeill, Rayonier Logging Camp; Jeune Landing, Port Alice; Denham Bay Logging Camp; and Nimpkish Logging Camp.

There are also slides depicting Vancouver, the construction of BC Place in 1982-1983, and Ladysmith.

Alden Wesley Huson Fonds

Alden Wesley Huson (1832-1911), also known as West Huson, was a Vancouver Island entrepreneur, promoter, trader, and businessman with interests in a salmon saltery and cannery at Alert Bay, a coal mine at Suquash near Fort Rupert, and a quarry on Haddington Island.
A.H. Huson, also known as “West” Huson, was born in Oneonta, New York in 1832, the son of David Tomkin Huson and Sally Jackson. A.W. Huson arrived in British Columbia in 1858, and by 1867 he was living in Victoria and running the Adelphi Saloon. He established a close friendship with the photographer Stephen A. Spencer and opened a salmon saltery at Alert Bay on Cormorant Island, with Spencer acting as his agent in Victoria. Huson had obtained a lease to the entire island around 1870 and established a cannery, but by 1880 his lease was reduced to 160 acres as a result of the allotment of most of the island as an Indian Reserve. He transferred his interest in the cannery to Spencer in 1884. Huson married Mary Lyons, a First Nations woman from Alaska, also known as Ekegat, in 1873, and adopted her son Charlie Lyons. They had at least 9 children together. Although his wife and most of his family lived at Alert Bay, Huson travelled to Victoria frequently in order to trade and negotiate business deals, and later to visit his granddaughter Stella. He eventually moved to Victoria permanently. In his later life, Huson attempted to sue various parties over his rights to the property on Haddington Island. He died in Alert Bay in 1911.
The records consist of correspondence, invoices, receipts, agreements, land and tax records, a genealogy of A.W. Huson’s ancestors, and one photograph of A.W. Huson’s stepson, Charlie Lyons Huson.
The correspondence is primarily inward correspondence to A.W. Huson from his father David T. Huson, his sister Elizabeth Huson, his wife Mary, children Charlie [aka Charley], Spencer, Alfred, David, and George, grand-daughter Stella, friends such as Stephen Spencer, and other business associates. Huson’s stepson Charley lived for a time with Stephen Spencer and his wife “Em” in Victoria while attending school.

The records document the business activities of an early entrepreneur on Vancouver Island, and the life of a significant historical figure on Vancouver Island.

Of particular note is an 1871 letter from Father Leon Fouquet of the Jesuit Mission on Harbledown Island offering to vaccinate Huson’s children against smallpox (File 1); four letters (1874-1878) from Stephen A. Spencer in File 2; 1895 and 1897 letters written by Alfred J. Huson while a student at the Coqualeetza Indian Institute (File 4), and letters from Stella Pamphlet in Files 7 and 8, written while she was a child. Stella was the daughter of Ada Elvina Huson and Frederick William Pamphlet. There are also letters from James McGrath, who ran a store in Alert Bay, Stephen Cook, and A. Mouat of Barkerville.

Barry McClung transcribed many of the letters, and the transcriptions are filed with the originals.

Medals, Tokens and Numismatic Collection

There are 4 main types of material in the collection: medals and awards of merit, tokens, numismatic paper, and numismatic coins. The category of “medals” also includes occasional items of jewelry, commemorative objects of various types and militaria, while the category of numismatic paper includes banknotes, tickets, ration books, scrip, coupons, passbooks and paper. Tokens were issued by a wide range of businesses including dairies, bakeries, and transportation companies.

Most of the material relates to British Columbia. There are occasional items (particularly paper and coinage) from other countries.

PR-2365 also includes the H.J. Sceats collection of Chinese, Japanese and Korean coinage (a gift to the B.C. Archives in 1937), and a collection of Roman and ancient British coins from an unknown source.

PR-2365 also includes 12.5 cm of associated textual material such as souvenir coin holders, cases, brochures, and letters of donation. These have been labelled with the same item number as the object to which they relate, and may be found in container 001967-0026.
The objects have been arranged by category of material (medals, tokens, numismatic paper and numismatic coins), with a few exceptions. Each object has a unique item number. Note that the item numbers in each container are not necessarily inclusive.

All items were re-housed and described as part of a volunteer project which concluded in 2017.

Earl Marsh collection

The collection consists of the records gathered by Earl Marsh, who intended to preserve the history of the British Columbia Coast Steamship Service (BCCSS) and the maritime history of British Columbia generally. He primarily collected records from BCCSS employees and their family members, as well as libraries and archives.

The collection also consists of the employment records of Earl Marsh, personal correspondence pertaining to his collecting activities, and records Marsh probably used in his position as accountant for the BCCSS.

Marsh accumulated the bulk of his collection between 1964 and 1973, during the last years in which the BCCSS provided passenger services. The records themselves were created between 1868 and 1999, with the majority created between 1922 and 1975. Records in the collection pertain primarily to the province of British Columbia, Washington State, and the state of Alaska.

The main subject of Earl Marsh’s collection is the BCCSS. Marsh was interested in the practical operations of the organization and its regional context, so his collection includes records about the BCCSS’s privately-owned competitors, other branches of the Canadian Pacific Railway Company engaged in shipping, and the establishment of government ferry services in British Columbia.

Operational records of the BCCSS provide insight into the lives of crew members who worked on ships, the financial state of the company, the design and construction of ships and shipping infrastructure, coastal weather and tide patterns, and significant shipwrecks.

As an employee of the BCCSS, Marsh had a special interest in crew members. The records reveal the job duties, union contracts, and company guidelines that shaped the lives of the workers. In addition, Marsh’s collection contains a small selection of records about the Chinese Canadian crew members of BCCSS ships. Many of these workers were employed at the time of the Chinese Exclusion Act and experienced systematic discrimination by their employer.

Marsh was also particularly fascinated by the passenger services offered by the BCCSS on their line of 32 “Princess” steamships. Prior to the First World War, Princess ships represented the height of elegance and efficiency in coastal transportation. Marsh gathered numerous photographs, menus, deck plans, and newspaper clippings that convey some of the glamour of passenger travel aboard these ships.

The records originated with different creators. The majority of the records were created by the Canadian Pacific Navigation Company, which was eventually taken over by the BCCSS, the BCCSS, and the Canadian Pacific Railway Company. Some records were created by other branches of the Canadian Pacific Railway Company, such as the British Columbia Lake and River Service.

Documentary forms include scrapbooks about the BCCSS, subject files, scrapbooks about other shipping companies, original BCCSS volumes such as log and time books, ephemera and photographic negatives, files of personal records, and rolls of technical drawings. Records were originally arranged in groupings according to their subject (often indicated in a folder title) and documentary form. Within some subject groupings, Marsh arranged files alphabetically.

The subjects of BCCSS-related scrapbooks include the numerous ships in the Princess line, staff members, and other aspects of the organization's history. Among many other material types, the scrapbooks contain news clippings, original company correspondence and financial records, photographs, and technical drawings. Marsh arranged these scrapbooks in rough alphabetical order.

Marsh maintained subject files on numerous ships in the Princess line, BCCSS staff members and history, and the history of other shipping companies, including the Puget Sound Navigation Company and Black Ball Ferries Limited. He kept his files on BCCSS ships in rough alphabetical order.

Marsh’s scrapbooks about non-BCCSS companies cover other branches of the Canadian Pacific Railway Company and organizations based in Washington State and the state of Alaska. These scrapbooks were not maintained in any discernible order.

Marsh maintained log books and time books from the Canadian Pacific Navigation Company and BCCSS; however, few complete sets of log books and time books exist for various ships. He also collected road maps and ephemera such as post cards, along with photographs, negatives, and slides, in random order in shoeboxes.

Marsh included his own personal correspondence and employment records in the collection. These materials were originally received in labelled files.

Marsh kept technical drawings in large rolls. Often, a roll featured upwards of 20 drawings of a single ship.
