The bush and the salon : Canadian portraits : The Chilcotin revisited

SUMMARY: "The Bush and Salon" was a series that recreated early Canadian life from letters, diaries, and other sources. In this program, a journey in the summer of 1970 retraces the travels and experiences of Phyllis Bryant as a young mother, homesteading in the Cariboo-Chilcotin region with her husband and four children during the 1920s. Based on oral history interviews and other recordings from the 1970 journey, it presents the trials and joys of a pioneer family. The voices heard include: Phyllis Bryant Kellis, Peggy Keefe, Jim Keefe, Harry McGhee, Dean Holt, Bill Broughton, Elmer Purdue, and Dan Lee.

That They Might Have Life : an autobiography by the late Reverend Stanley E. Higgs / edited by G. Bramwell

The item consists of an edited typescript called "That They Might Have Life: an autobiography by the late Reverend Stanley E. Higgs". It contains an account of his life from his education at St. Augustine's College, Canterbury (1923-1927), his journey to, and missionary work at Lytton, (1928-1933) and his later postings at Clinton (1933- 1935), Quesnel (1935-1937) and Lytton (1937-1941), to when he joined the Canadian Army as chaplain in 1941.

The records are arranged by case number. At least some of the records in this series appear to have passed through the custody of the Government Agent at Clinton, although they appear to have been ultimately managed by the Small Debts Court. The records are covered by ORCS 51360-20 under Court Services schedule 100152.

Robert Carson interview

RECORDED: [location unknown], 1965-10-03 SUMMARY: TRACK 1: Mr. Robert Henry Carson remembers the Carson Ranch at Pavilion. He discusses his grandfather, Hugh Magee, who settled on the Fraser River; his father Robert Carson, born 1841, died 1911, came from Scotland and settled in Pavilion in 1864; a cattle drive to Vancouver in 1887 with Robert Carson, Richard Hoey and Pecullah Kosta; the dispute over water rights; his father taking up land on the lower benches; a new style of ranching; school; the family home; stories about Richard McBride, Pauline Johnson and John Oliver; anecdotes; and water rights legislation.

TRACK 2: The story of water rights is continued as well as Indian ranch hands; selling surplus hay in Clinton; childhood memories of the stage between Clinton and Lillooet; parents; how he left the ranch in 1909; worked on a survey crew; worked in real estate in Vancouver from 1910 to 1914; colourful characters back at the ranch, such as Dave Williams and Cataline.

The series consists of assorted forms and records that may have been used by the Government Agent in Clinton in the 1920s. The series includes a formulaic Grand Jury statement signed by C A Semlin, as well as forms and instructions for opening court, a memorandum on the fees and expensees allowed to witnesses attending speedy trials and assizes, and several blank forms for County Court matters. Several of the records bear the letterhead or stamp of the Clinton Government Agent.

Mr. and Mrs. A.F. Haller interview

RECORDED: [location unknown], 1965 SUMMARY: TRACK 1: Mr. Gussie Haller and Mrs. Maggie Haller of North Kamloops discuss their lineage in the Cariboo. Mr. Haller tells the story of his father coming to the Cariboo in 1858, as he settled at the Big Bar Creek; a trading post, now called the O.K. Ranch. His grandfather, Phil Grinder and the Grinder family also started the Jack Pine Ranch. They were dry farmers. Mr. Haller discusses smallpox; various people who were in the area, including Conrad Kostring; a description of dances and Christmas gatherings in the area. Finally, Mr. Haller tells the story of his father's pack train which traveled the Naas River.

TRACK 2: Mrs. Haller tells the story of her grandmother, the daughter of a Haida Chief. Her grandfather, Joe Tresierra, left Spain during a cholera outbreak and became a packer in BC. She tells the story of packers lost near Hazelton and a crossing bridge Yale. She describes her grandmother. She describes how the family lived in Clinton and how her paternal grandfather, John Miller, ran the ferry at Churn Creek. She describes high water; pet deer; the smallpox epidemic; and her grandparent's ranch. Then Mr. Haller describes how his father built a sawmill and dams. He describes his father's store and speaks of how his father packed supplies from Lillooet to Yale.
