The series consists of films and videotapes produced or acquired by the Ministry of Tourism government film unit (and its predecessor bodies) responsible for creating and distributing tourism and promotional films about British Columbia.

The item is a composite print of a recreational film from 1979. It shows the promotion at ski areas in BC with animated sequences about development of skiing. Most ski footage from Rockies, but brief shots of Mt. Whistler and an Okanagan ski slope.

Men, mountains and the challenge

The item is a composite print of a documentary film made ca. 1957. It shows highway construction in BC. Includes planning and surveys; opening of contractors' bids by Highways Minister Gaglardi; clearing of route by heavy equipment; culvert assembly; drilling and blasting rock; road bed preparation; paving. Traffic control and overpass construction are also discussed. Sections of Highways 1 and 1A are shown, and Premier W.A.C. Bennett presides at an official opening.

Atlin

The item is a composite print of a travelogue, made 1978-1979. It is a portrait of the historic gold rush town of Atlin in the northwestern corner of BC. Includes shots of abandoned mining sites and the old sternwheeler "Tarahne".

The Fraser Canyon

The item is a composite print of a documentary film made 1957 to 1959. It tells the history of the Fraser Canyon, from Simon Fraser through to the surveying of the Cariboo Road during the Cariboo gold rush, and the construction of the modern-day highway through the canyon. Includes re-enactments of historical scenes (explorers, prospectors, Royal Engineers building road, etc.) and early film footage of the highway, ca.1920s.

Gliding and ghost town footage

The item is a film reel of unedited footage from ca. 1971 to 1973. It contains extensive footage shot from and of gliders, probably in the Fraser Valley near Hope. Includes a hundred-foot segment that probably shows the remnants of the abandoned settlement of Walhachin. The ghost town footage included in this reel resembles the brief "Walhachin" sequence in the travelogue "Mirrors to the Sun", so this reel probably consists of footage shot for that film.

The silent ones

The item is a composite print of a documentary film from 1957. It depicts the expedition of the BC Provincial Museum and the University of British Columbia to Anthony Island in the Queen Charlotte Islands (Haida Gwaii) to salvage Haida totem poles and other relics. Scenes at the abandoned villages of Ninstints, Tanu and Skedans.

The item is a film reel of out-takes from ca. 1941. It includes footage of: Hatley Park gardens; Olde English Inn; passengers disembarking at Victoria; 1940 license plates; customs/immigration check; golf match with spectators; various shots of Victoria, including more gardens; Inner Harbour with ships; Oak Bay Golf Course.

The Okanagan Valley : British Columbia's orchard playground

The item is a film print of a travelogue from the 1940s. It shows the scenery and recreational features of the Okanagan Valley, travelling south from Kamloops to the Canada/USA border. Includes: Interior Exhibition at Armstrong; seed growing; cherry growing; sequence on water sports and Kelowna Regatta (including Lady of the Lake pageant); sequence on apple orchards and packing plant; Okanagan Falls cattle auction and Osoyoos area vegetable crops.

Temptation

The item is a composite print of an industrial film from 1958 depicting fruit-growing in the Okanagan Valley. There are scenes of apple orchard preparation, irrigation, pruning, spraying, blossom-time and picking are followed by scenes showing packing-house operations and the production of apple juice at Sun-Rype Products Ltd. There is a lengthy sequence on the annual Kelowna Regatta: diving and swimming events at the Aquatic Pool, speedboat races, water skiing and the Regatta parade. There are also brief scenes at the dispatching office of BC Tree Fruits and at the Agricultural Experimental Farm in Summerland (bud grafting experiments).

Peachtime in the valley : Penticton, British Columbia

The item is a film print of a travelogue made in 1951. It depicts the Hope-Princeton Highway and the Penticton Peach Festival and Rodeo. Footage includes: Manning Park and highway scenes en route to Penticton; Peach Festival parade (including girls' pipe band); crowning of Queen Val Vedette; festival midway; harness racing. Rodeo events include pattern riding, bronco riding, calf roping, bulldogging steers and bull riding. Also lake shore and orchard scenes. BC highway construction is promoted in the commentary.

Vancouver honeymoon

The item is a composite print of a travelogue from 1961. It showcases scenery, attractions and industries in the Vancouver area. General and aerial views of Vancouver, plus sequences on the harbour, Vancouver International Airport, Stanley Park, UBC, the Vancouver International Festival and the PNE. Industry is depicted through shots of a sawmill, a fish cannery, a foundry and a shipyard (where the vessel Yukon is launched). Water sports, golf and skiing at Grouse Mountain are shown, as well as Queen Elizabeth Park, Capilano Suspension Bridge, the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, Granville Street at night and a White Spot drive-in.

Vancouver Island : British Columbia's island playground : 1956-1957 version

The item is a composite print of a travelogue made in 1956-1957. It is a revised version of the film and incorporates footage from the 1941-1942 and 1951 versions, as well as new footage. New footage includes cars coming off the ferry in Victoria's inner harbour; dockside scenes, including a freighter loading; a Trans-Canada Airlines aircraft arriving at Patricia Bay airport; Malahat Summit scenery; marina and fishing scenes; downtown Duncan and local logging operations; the John Hart hydro-electric plant; etc.

The item is a composite print of a travelogue made between 1972 and 1977 which highlights the Lower Mainland and Sunshine Coast. Includes footage of Vancouver (general), Abbotsford Air Show, Royal Hudson steam train excursion, ferry from Horseshoe Bay, Sechelt, sport fishing, boat trip up Jervis Inlet, salmon fishing derby, Garibaldi Provincial Park (camping, mountain climbing).

The Fraser Valley, British Columbia

The item is an answer print of a travelogue film from 1947-1948. It shows the Fraser Valley from White Rock to Hope, via Vancouver and the Trans-Canada Highway. The film includes footage of: King George VI Highway; White Rock; Peace Arch Park; Canada customs inspection; dairy, poultry and vegetable farming; brickmaking; Stave falls power plant; the Fraser Valley Union Library; Chilliwack Cherry Carnival Parade; Chilliwack Air Show; fishing on Vedder River; Harrison Lake resort; etc. Also shows use of an Avro Anson (registration CF-EKM) to transport live baby chicks by air, and use of a Republic Seabee seaplane to fly in to Chilliwack Lake for an afternoon's fishing.

Guide to a salmon : out-takes

The item consists of three reels of film out-takes, from 1968 to 1970. In it, Hollywood stars Glenn Ford and Harve Presnell take a salmon fishing vacation at Campbell River, accompanied by Peter Ford and Mrs. Presnell.

The item is a video master of a promotional video, from around 1986. It outlines British Columbia's efforts to eliminate drinking drivers, including a list of the various penalties imposed on those convicted.

Prophecy of the Peace : [long version]

The item is a composite print of an industrial film from ca. 1964. It shows the continuing construction of Portage Mountain dam on the Peace River. Includes: re-enactments of the region's history (Indigenous people, Alexander Mackenzie's journeys, fur trade & homesteading); local farming; dam construction; the 5-mile conveyor built to carry earth fill to build the dam; activity in and around Prince George; the Endako Mine; etc.

The sensitive sockeye

The item is a release print of a documentary film from ca. 1958. It depicts the life cycle of the sockeye salmon and the work of the International Pacific Salmon Fisheries Commission in ensuring the survival of that cycle and of BC's salmon fishing industry. Footage includes: Fort St. James salmon run; seining and gillnetting for sockeye; fishways, fish ladders at Hell's gate, Bridge River and Seton Creek dam; etc.

Kootenay Lake holiday

The item is a release print of a travelogue film from 1961. It shows the attractions of the Kootenay Lake area. Includes footage of Creston; swimming and boating on Kootenay Lake; ferry to Balfour; the retired sternwheeler "Moyie"; trout fishing; Kokanee Glacier Park campground; Nelson's annual summer curling bonspiel, pancake breakfast and logging sports day, and the Nelson Summer School of Fine Arts (with shots of painting, weaving, pottery and dance).
