Essays and accounts

The series consists of microfilmed transcripts of short essays on various subjects, including the transport and mining industries in B.C., the history of B.C., descriptions of Victoria and other B.C. cities by Cariboo grocer Leonard A. Coton. Also includes accounts of car trips taken by L.A. Coton to the Okanagan, the Cariboo and on Vancouver Island in the 1950s.

Vernon Llewellyn Denton records

Correspondence relating mainly to Simon Fraser and an atlas produced by Denton; notes and a typed manuscript relating to Simon Fraser, plus several copies of Fraser's 1806 and 1808 journals and letters 1806-1807. There are notes on the fur trade, early Vancouver Island, the Cariboo gold rush, Sir James Douglas, confederation and the Canadian Pacific Railway; and on Louis Riel and the Metis rebellions.

Birch family papers

The series consists of photocopies of Henry William Birch's commonplace notebook, two diaries kept by Arthur Nonus Birch pertaining to a trip to North America and his service as colonial secretary of British Columbia, correspondence with various members of the Birch family, reminiscences of life in the colonial service by Arthur Nonus Birch, and photographs. The series also includes some Birch family papers on microfilm.

Ker family papers

Correspondence outward (1864, 1868) and inward (1861-1871) of Robert Ker, Colonial Auditor for Vancouver Island, with some of his commissions (1864, 1865, 1868), an indenture (1844), miscellaneous notes; correspondence of R.H.B. Ker and David Russell Kerr with General Crerar, 1944 (two letters), and of D.R. Ker with General Currie, 1917, and H. Joly de Lotbiniere, 1903 (two letters); clippings and photographs which have been transferred to Visual Records accession 198210-007. The Ker family lived in Victoria, B.C. Robert Henry Brackman Ker was an executive with a number of British Columbia business firms, including Ker and Stephenson Ltd. and Brackman-Ker Milling Company. He served on Victoria City Council, as President of the Victoria Chamber of Commerce, and as Aide-de-Camp to the Lieutenant-Governor of B.C. The records include correspondence inward and outward, miscellaneous notes, clippings and photographs. Photographs transferred to Visual Records accession 198210-007. Judge's inscribed copy of Herbert Broom and Leonard Shelford, The Practice of the County Court (London, England, 1858). The volume contains inscriptions in the handwriting of P.J. O'Reilly and W.G. Cox, as well as artwork by Cox. The inscriptions say: "Government of British Columbia Magistrate at Fort Hope" and "Government of British Columbia, Cariboo East, 1863". The volume is bound with an animal skin spine.

Land sale records

This series consists of receipt books and miscellaneous land sale records. Records consist largely of receipts for the sale of town lots, suburban and country lands, and unsurveyed rural lands, issued by Assistant Commissioners of Lands and Works for Cariboo District, Lillooet District, Yale District, and New Westminster District. The series also includes land sale records pertaining to Lytton, Seymour, Douglas, Port Moody, Fort Langley, and Similkameen district, and a trading licences receipt book issued by Frank Trevor, Collector at Quesnel.

Lillooet District water rights records

This series consists of seven volumes of records of the Water Commissioner, Lillooet, B.C., related to water rights, 1859-1915. Includes grants of water right, licences, plans, notices, etc. Volume 5 covers area from south of Lillooet to 150 Mile House and includes Hanceville and Big Creek; volume 3 includes lots on the North Thompson.

British Columbia Supreme Court of Civil Justice bench books

Series consists of bench books for civil and criminal cases heard by Matthew Baillie Begbie in the British Columbia Supreme Court of Civil Justice, 1859-1873. The volumes include Begbie's notes of proceedings and may include draft copies of judgements and reasons for judgement. They focus primarily on cases heard on the Cariboo District court circuit. County Court cases may be included as are appeals from the Gold Commissioner's Court. The volumes cover Begbie's term as Justice for the Colony of British Columbia and the unified Colony of British Columbia as well as the early years of his tenure as Chief Justice of British Columbia after the colony became a province of Canada. There is a single entry for a case heard by Henry P.P. Crease at Victoria, 1871.

Volumes 3-8 were originally numbered by Begbie as volumes 1-6.

Ten letters written to family and friends in Ontario from Victoria and from Cariboo, where Wilkinson worked as a miner and physician.

Pre-emption records

This series contains records relating to pre-emptions in the Cariboo, Lillooet, Lytton and Kootenay Districts recorded by various Gold Commissioners and Assistant Commissioners of Lands and Works. The records consist of correspondence, notices of claim, sketches and affidavits and pertains largely to records in the vicinities of Quesnel, Alexandria, Williams Lake, Lytton and Cache Creek. The series also includes a detailed account of town lot sales at Quesnellemouth held on 13 October 1863 as well as an application for wages due, correspondence on various land disputes, several water records, and proposed leases of government reserves.

The series consists of records created by the Government Agent and the Gold Commissioner of the Cariboo District, between 1860 and 1938. It includes correspondence inward and outward; court, mining, land, financial and administrative records.

Cariboo Government Agency financial records

This series consists of a variety of financial records created by the Cariboo Government Agent and its successors from 1860-1948. Records are related to locations throughout the Cariboo and Chilcotin region, including, Quesnel (Quesnelle Forks or Quesnelmouth), Lightening Creek, Barkerville and Richfield. Records include collectorate cash books, waste books, records of payments of pre-emptions, assay office expenses, a mineral tax register, liquor sale records, a Bank of British Columbia bank book, a company stock journal, a tax assessment book, handwritten notes and invoices, and a list of arms borrowed from the Government Agent at Quesnelmouth. There is also a record book documenting supplies, equipment, memoranda's, and some records from the Lightening Creek Gold Commissioner's Court.

Collectorate books record the collection of various fees by the government agent. Such as trade licences, liquor licences, marriage licences, pre-emption records, water records, mining records, fines such as “Indian fines”, deposits and rent.

This series consists of plaint and procedure books for the County Court held at Lillooet, 1861-1977. Also includes record book from Magistrate's Court at Lillooet, 1893-1902; and proceedings of Small Debts Court, Lillooet, 1893-1902. The plaint and procedure books cover primarily civil cases, as well as naturalization records up to 1953, appeals, mechanic’s liens, woodmen's liens, and some criminal cases. The last two volumes include some probate/estate administration cases.

Cariboo district land records

This series contains the records of the Gold Commissioner, Government Agent, and Assistant Land Commissioner, Cariboo District (Quesnel). The records consist of lot registers, certificates of purchase, certificates of pre-emption, registers of pre-emptions (canceled and allowed), registers of land applications and lands purchased, register of leaves of absence granted pre-emption on active service, minute books containing lot register of lands along the route of the Pacific Great Eastern Railway, and registers of hay and pasture land leases. The series also includes townsite registers for Quesnel, Barkerville, and Wells and lot registers for some townships in the Peace River Block. Volumes 89-98 and 153-158 are oversize.

Frederick Dally papers

The series consists of records created by Frederick Dally including correspondence and letters of introduction; notes on his voyage from London (1862), a trip around Vancouver Island on H.M.S. SCOUT (1866), a journey to the Cariboo and his witness of the Barkerville fire (1868), First Nations people of British Columbia, and various other topics; printed items relating to his training as a dentist and later life in England. Records are arranged into three thematic groups, correspondence, miscellaneous documents, and printed items.

Charles Hardy journal

The series includes the transcript of an 1862 gold rush-era diary of Charles Hardy. The diary details Hardy’s activities from March 23, 1862 until “after Easter” 1863 traveling to the Cariboo. The diary details travel routes, weather conditions, and living experiences during this time, providing a firsthand account of life during this period. It is understood the original has not survived.

The pen and ink transcript was undertaken by Charles Hardy’s daughter, Florence Hardy in ca.1945 after she immigrated to Canada in the 1930s.

Cariboo Land District land registers

This series consists of Cariboo Land District lot registers, or land registers. The volumes cover lots 1-10026. The earliest entries start in 1862 and the volumes were superseded by 1922 (i.e. no further entries were made after 1922). The registers that supersede this series may be found in GR-2592.

The registers list lots in numerical order and record the alienation of land from the Crown (by purchase, pre-emption, lease, etc.). Information may include the name of the purchaser, dates and numbers of certificates issued (including (Crown Grants), dates and amounts of payments, and reference numbers to correspondence files and field books. There is an alphabetical name index in each volume.

This series consists of three volumes of Richfield Magistrate's record books. Volumes are a charge and sentence book, 1862-1874; charge and sentence book, 1974-1978, containing licencing records kept by the court registry, 1878-1907; and a notebook, 1887-1914, recording Magistrate's court cases at Richfield, Small Debts Court cases at Richfield and some cases at Soda Creek and Quesnel.
