The volume includes proceedings from sessions held at Barkerville, Soda Creek, Richfield, 150 Mile House, Quesnel and South Fort George, although the court appears to have settled at Barkerville after 1911.

Bills of sale

The series consists of indexes and bills of sale from the Quesnel County Court. The records were created between 1915 and 1925 and include bills of sale, agreements, liens relating to livestock, conditional sales, and Land Settlement Board soldier settlements.

The series consists of three volumes of indexes. The “FROM” volume is arranged alphabetically by seller’s name and the “TO” volume is arranged alphabetically by purchaser’s namer. The third volume is a complete register with both seller and purchaser’s names. This volume includes names, occupations, addresses, and the particulars of purchase. The “TO” and “FROM” volumes include file and page numbers that correspond to the bill of sale records in subsequent folders. The bills of sale are arranged by what the indexes call the “file” number.

The sales were made under subsection 4 of section 2 of the “Sale of Goods Act Amendment” (SBC 1916, c. 56) which states “The office for filing shall be the office of the Registrar of the County Court holden in or nearest to the place where delivery of the chattels is made or required to be made.”

Notebook with entries in 3 different hands. Most of the book (starting at a page numbered 34) is an Assize record book kept by A.T. Bushby. This starts with a handwritten copies of oaths used in court: for Jurors in Lunacy, Grand Jurors, Foremen of the Jury, Petit Jurors (criminal and civil), Witnesses, and Interpreters; also a copy of the "7 Steps to Opening of Court". Starting December 1864, there are notes on criminal cases and bankruptcy, insolvency, winding-up, Chancery and probate cases, many held in Chambers. G.A. Walkem, H.P. Walker, Mr. Barnston and A.R. Robertson are mentioned as Attorneys, Oliver Hare as the Official Assignee. February 15, 1865 Clement Francis Cornwall is admitted on the Roll of British Columbia to practice as barrister at Law; November 25, 1865, Robert Edwin Jackson (Drake and Jackson, Victoria, VI) applied to be admitted to practice in British Columbia as a solicitor. For each Assize there is a list of Jurors: New Westminster (March 25, April 1, May 3, 1865); Lytton (May 13, 1865); Lillooet (May 23, 1865); Quesnellemouth (June 10,1865); Richfield (June 20, 1865); New Westminster (June 28 - Jul 14, 1865); Richfield (July 20, 1865); Kootenay (September 18, 1865); Lytton (November 6, 1865); Yale (November 11, 1865); New Westminster (November 17, 1865 - March 1867). This notebook corresponds with the more detailed Begbie benchbook GR-2025, volume 5). Bill of Sale record of registrations (1-10) kept by Oliver Hare for "Keithley and Mouth of Quesnelle district, 1873"; one page, dated 1877, lists three mining claims at Keithley Creek.

This series consists of a wide variety of records received or created by government officials in the Cariboo region from 1868 to 1915. Most of the records are addressed to government officials or were created by courts in the following places: Richfield, Barkerville, Quesnelle Forks and other locations in the Cariboo district. Over the years, the government offices responsible for the entire Cariboo district were located in each of these towns. The majority of the records appear to have been received by the Government Office, Richfield.

At this time government offices held a very wide range of responsibilities which could be done by as few as one person. The records relate to several government officials: the Gold Commissioner, Government Agent, Magistrate, County Court judge and Supreme Court judge.

The majority of the records are related to leasing, purchasing or gaining access to water for mining claims. This includes some records from the Gold Commissioner court.

There are also many county court and supreme court records. These records include summons; wills; probate and other estate records; search warrants; assizes; court transcripts; evidence; coroner inquest records; assize court calendars; sheriff records; and notes of the Board of Liquor Licence Commissioners approving renewal of liquor licences.

Other types of records include general correspondence from settlers; census data; voters lists; voter registration forms from Keithley Creek; criminal statistics; Land Ordinances; pre-emption records and other records related to the Land Act; naturalization oaths; indentures; receipts and financial records; maps; petitions for liquor licences; a BC Savings Bank (Cariboo Branch) depositors book; and a register of letters inward and outward for 1910-1915.

Cariboo Magistrate records

The series consists of preliminary hearing and speedy trial files created by the Cariboo Magistrate between 1909 and 1925. Records in each file may include information and complaint forms, depositions, warrants, statements of witnesses and accused and other material relating to the case.

Most of the files are for criminal cases and cover the following offences: theft, assault, forgery, burglary, carnal knowledge, fighting and bestiality.

The series consists of correspondence, transcripts, statements, warrants and complaints from the Williams Lake office of H.B. Campbell, the Stipendiary Magistrate for the County of Cariboo, March 1923 to November 1925. The records deal with various civil and criminal cases including Liquor Act violations, Motor Vehicle Act violations, maintenance of deserted wives and children, theft, assault, rape and murder.

Cariboo Small Debts Court cause books

The series consists of two cause books from the Small Debts Court in Barkerville. The first, in accession 75-G-053, was created between November 1933 and September 1940. This volume also includes proceedings under the Deserted Wives Maintenance Act. The series also includes a Sheriff's record book for the County Court of Cariboo, created between April 1895 and September 1899, listing summonses issued and served in Quesnel, 150 Mile House, Soda Creek, Richfield, Ashcroft Station and Clinton. The second Barkerville cause book, in accession 83-0774, was created between February 1941 and February 1950. It includes receipts issued by the Gold Commissioner’s office at Barkerville.

The series also consists of one ledger created solely by the County Court of Cariboo for small debts cases heard in Quesnel and Williams Lake. The cause book is arranged chronologically, but there is a loose alphabetical index included in the volume. Cases dating from 1921-1923 were heard in Williams Lake, and cases from 1925-1948 were heard in Quesnel. The spine bindings on this volume indicate that the ledger may have originally been in the possession of the the Government Agent of 150 Mile House.

C.F. Cornwall bench books

Series consists of five record books kept by Clement Francis Cornwall during his time as a County Court judge for the Cariboo district from 1891 to 1906. The circuit included stops at Revelstoke, Donald, Lytton, Kamloops, 150 Mile House, Ashcroft, Quesnel, Lillooet, Clinton, Soda Creek and Richfield/Barkerville. The entries in the record books are arranged chronologically and consist of detailed notes of the cases he heard including details of judgements and sentencing. Most of the cases heard are County Court level and focus on small claims and recovery of debt but there are also naturalizations and criminal cases (including speedy trials) for theft and other criminal matters.

The book records details of individuals cases of criminal activity tried by the Indian Agent, the Justice of the Peace or the Judge. Details of each charge include date, name, age, calling (profession), place of residence, charge, sentence and other remarks. The book is not indexed.

The series consists of one volume of the naturalization register created at the County Court of Quesnel. Records date to between 1914 and 1977. The ledger is arranged alphabetically and entries provide information on the full name of applicant, their occupation, former place of residence, current place of residence, the date notice and papers were filed, the date naturalization certificate was issued, the date it was delivered and to whom it was delivered. Places of residence include Quesnel, Cottonwood, Moose Heights, Wells, Hixon, Barkerville, and Van Winkle. The register also includes a “declaration of intent” list tucked into the front cover.

Presentments of the Grand Jurors

Presentments of the Grand Jurors in and for the District of Cariboo East, July 1867. The report is submitted by J.H. Todd (foreman) to Chief Justice Begbie and reports on the Jury's inspection of the hospital, jail, court house, sidewalks and roads, fire hazards in town particularly the need for an explosives storehouse, the need for better trails to outlying creeks and the annoyance caused by an unnecessary number of dogs. Chief Justice Begbie responds to each of these points in his covering letter forwarding the presentments to the Colonial Secretary.
