The item is a miniature portrait of a young woman dressed in a mid-nineteenth century style, with a large hat, blue dress, and large necklace. The back of the frame has two historical labels. The one at the top reads: "Emily Harley Toldervy Lee, London, Eng[land]. Further down, the second label has multiple inscriptions in different hands. It names the sitter with a slight variation: Hartley. Also on the label is a note about hanging the portrait out of the sun to avoid damage. Underneath this is a note in a third hand saying, "For Ruth Davidson Lee [illegible]".
