The series contains records of the Dept. of Fisheries (1907-1957), the Commercial Fisheries Branch (1957-1973), and the Marine Resources Branch (1973-1979). These records relate to commercial fisheries, the regulation, development and conservation of marine resources, and the administration of the B.C. Fisheries Act. Included are orders-in-council, copies of correspondence of the Minister and Deputy Minister of the Dept. of Recreation and Conservation and of the Assistant Commissioner of Fisheries, central subject files of the Branch, oyster licence and permit records, annual returns of salmon canning plants and sport-caught fish canneries, a licence receipt book, files relating to motor vessels operated by the Branch, and biological research materials. The subject files contain correspondence relating to the Canadian Council of Resource and Environment Ministers, Federal-Provincial B.C. Fisheries Committee, Strait of Georgia Task Force, the Fishermen Loan Board, the Fisheries Association of British Columbia, the United Fishermen and Allied Workers' Union and the International North Pacific Fisheries Committee.

The item is a composite print of a recreational film from 1957. It show sports fishing in BC and includes footage of Fraser Canyon fish ladders, government trout hatcheries, fishing for Kamloops and steelhead trout, Dolly Varden, and spring and coho salmon. Also Polson Pool at Vernon, designed to teach youngsters good fishing habits.

The item is a reel of film stock shots from ca. 1977. It contains miscellaneous B.C. scenery. Aerial views of coastline (Long Beach). Shots of seals, small islands, and people playing in the surf. Mountainside waterfall and stream. Shots of and from a car on a highway. Water skiing; canoeing. Loggers' sports events. Sequence on the Royal Hudson steam train, with shots of and from the train going south along Howe Sound, aerial shots, travelling shots, etc. Aerial shots of a BC Ferry, Active Pass, Gulf Islands. Swimming, boating, sports fishing. Aerial views of mountains. Camping on the shore of a lake; canoeing, glacier, mountains. Cowboys take part in rodeo events; audience looks on. Fishing and hunting

The item is an amateur film in two reels, made ca. 1960. It includes footage of river fishing including large catch of rainbow trout, cleaning fish and camp scenes on the Fraser River. Includes First Nations dip-netting for salmon, cleaning and drying fish. Also scenes of Chilcotin scenery and people including fishing river for salmon, journey by open river boat, dropping off supplies, running rapids, wildlife, examining pelts, beaver lodge and dam, First Nations village from boat. More river boat travel, scenery, wildlife at Bulkley River and Moricetown Falls including spearing fish, spawning salmon, sports fishers catch and gaff salmon, fillet and smoke the fish. Salmon carcasses and bear. Scenes of a hunter shooting birds, Alexandria suspension bridge, Hell's Gate fish ladders, junction or Fraser and Thompson Rivers (at Lytton), Adams River salmon run and goose hunting in winter.

Diary of Marshall Bond

The item is a photocopy of Marshall Bond's diary book from February and March 1913. It details Bond's trip from Seattle to Vancouver Island for a fishing trip. It also includes business notes, addresses and lists of words and their definitions.

Footage. Miscellaneous shots: boat heading along a shore, highway beside a river, a couple beside their cabin, horses in corral, fall foliage, women and horses, fishing on a lake. Also shows the first helicopter owned by Okanagan Helicopters (an open-cockpit Bell 47B-3, registration CF-FZX) being viewed by curious residents. (The helicopter pilots may be Carl Agar and Bill McLeod.)

[Cariboo region, Vancouver, Fraser Valley]

Footage. A film showing tourism and commerce in three areas: the Cariboo region around 100 Mile House, Vancouver, and the upper Fraser Valley. Cariboo region subjects include fishing, motoring, horseback riding, boating, hiking, pioneer buildings, a covered wagon, and ranching. In Vancouver the focus is shipping. Upper Fraser Valley subjects include Chilliwack businesses and residences, agriculture, outdoor recreation, Hope area campgrounds, Fort Hope Lodge, hiking, boating, and horseback riding. Visitors cross the Fraser River in a canoe to see a waterfall.

Guests and topics for this episode are: Interview with David Crombie, MP Rosedale (Progressive Conservative), and former Mayor of Toronto; freeways; development; zero-based budgeting; the Conservative party in Quebec health care. Reporter Brian Coxford on location in Campbell River, to get the community's response to the proposed Sports Fishing Regulations on barbed hooks, size limits, licensing. Brian Coxford interviews various people in the industry including Norm McLaren, President of the Campbell River Chamber of Commerce; Bill Carlo, owner of Boatland; Ed Enns, owner of River Sportsman; Bill May, owner of Tyee Marine; Bryon Armstrong, owner of Painter's Lodge; and Colin Smith, owner of Dolphin's Resort. Coxford attends a meeting of protest: speakers include John Ebert, Fish and Wildlife Association; Kevin Storrie, owner, Kevin's Pro Shop; Gordie Killoran, fishing guide; Jack Smith, sports fisherman; Mike Crammond, sports fishing writer; Don McCallum, tackle wholesaler; and Mary Ashley from the Vancouver Island Tourist Bureau. In the studio, Webster gets a response from Lee Straight, Recreational Fishing Advisor, Field Services, and Allan Gibson, Chief South Coast Division, Fisheries and Oceans. They also speak about regulations being a response to Chinook conservation concerns, and the ban on US charter boats operating in Canadian waters.
