Alberni Land District lot register
This series consists of an Alberni Land District lot register for lots 1-291 on Vancouver Island. The earliest entries are from 1872 and the volume was superseded by 1947 (i.e. no further entries were made after 1947). The register lists lots in numerical order and records the alienation of land from the Crown (by purchase, pre-emption, lease etc.). Information may include the name of the purchaser, dates and numbers of certificates issued (including Crown Grants), dates and amounts of payments, and reference numbers to correspondence files and field books. A summary of the auction sale of subdivided lots from the Eastern portion of District Lot 1, is shown on pp. 86-90. The volume contains an alphabetical index of names.

Series consists of applications for pre-emption. The documents consist of handwritten applications often accompanied by a sketch map of the property. Each application is given a number by the Dept. of Lands and Works. The series includes the number 1 to 442.
The majority of the applications relate to properties on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands though some of the properties are also located on the Stikine River.

It also includes copies of correspondence with Edward Stamp and Gilbert Malcolm Sproat pertaining to purchases of lands and various agreements on lands at Alberni and Barclay Sound in regard to the establishment and operation of a sawmill and a copper mining company. Includes a map of company land holdings in the Alberni valley.

Correspondence regarding the settlement of Vancouver Island

The series consists of copies of correspondence, chiefly from Alexander Begg (b.1825) [British Columbia Emigration Commissioner] to the Marquis of Lothian [Secretary of State for Scotland], concerning proposed Crofter settlement on Vancouver Island. There is additional correspondence from J.H. Turner [B.C. Minister of Finance] to Chancellor of the Exchequer, along with appeals from Highland crofters interested in the settlement. The series also includes documents from the government of British Columbia and the United Kingdom re financing the settlement, British Columbia government emigration pamphlets, and tracts from the British Columbia Development Company and the Vancouver Island Development Syndicate.
There are also documents and provincial government bills dealing with the establishment of deep sea fisheries, plus newspaper clippings, parliamentary reports, and Pacific Coast Steamship Company brochures.
This series contains a specialized volume that pertains only to correspondence relating to applications for Burnaby lots (folio 12), the Vancouver Island Settlers' Rights Act, 1903 (folio 138), and the South African War Land Grant Act, 1901 (folio 158). They includes name of correspondent and letter or file number.

Kenneth McKenzie family personal and business papers

The McKenzie Family collection consists of the business and personal papers of Kenneth McKenzie (1811-1874), his ancestors and descendants, including correspondence, notebooks, diaries, and other papers. It documents over one hundred and fifty years of family history. The collection is divided into those records relating to Vancouver Island (Boxes 1-19) and those relating to Scotland (Boxes 20-25). The Vancouver Island papers contain correspondence and documents pertaining to Lakehill Farm, the settlement of estates, official appointments, and other family matters. They also chronicle the organization and operation of Craigflower Farm and, to a lesser extent, the other farms operated by the Puget's Sound Agricultural Company on Vancouver Island. The Scottish papers document family events, relationships and property from 1779 to 1852. Included is an extensive record of the protracted settlement of the estate of William Blair (Boxes 22-23). William Blair was the father of Janet McKenzie (Blair).

Mining register and Royal Engineers record book
Series consists of one mining records register book. The volume is a register of various land grants, mineral claims, mining records, and water rights. Included are a December 1864-1878 register of all claims and water privileges recorded in the Leech and Sooke River districts and a 1873-1911 register of all mining records and mineral claims recorded at Victoria by the Chief Gold Commissioner. Areas covered include the Queen Charlotte Islands [Haida Gwaii], Cassiar district, portions of Vancouver Island, and adjacent mainland BC coasts. Also included is a list of Royal Engineers who purchased their discharge in BC or Vancouver Island on the return of the North American Boundary Commission to England on 26 Sep 1863 and Schedule of Crown Grants issued to Royal Engineers who served in the Colony of British Columbia under Colonel Moody.
