The item is a black and white photograph probably taken by Charles Macmunn in 1897 or 1898. It is taken from Christchurch Cathedral in Victoria looking towards James Bay and shows the new Parliament buildings and the birdcage buildings.

[Legislature opening]

News item. Premier Bennett with the press. He says: "Running for the Legislature isn't coming down and passing laws to restrict every other group in our society". On restraint: "The MLAs in our party, and we as a government, are prepared to do more than talk about it. -- we are prepared to exhibit leadership . . . in both private and public sectors." NDP MLAs comment: "Promise of vague things to come . . . There is the theme of restraint running through it . . . ." Socreds using the financial situation as "justification" to erode the opposition. Promise of increased assistance for people between ages of 55 and 59 under the Guaranteed Annual Income for Need Act. King on need: "It's the kind of mentality that has politicians playing God in terms of determining whether or not people are in need." Conservative MLA, Scott Wallace, is fairly positive, but says: "It doesn't have any specific advisers". The whole speech, he says, is concerned with the financial difficulties and "the restraint that must be exercised." He doubts the wisdom of "taking the tax off property for people over 65, regardless of their income."

News item. Footage shows B.C. Legislature in full session. Sound is poor (except for the desk slapping by the MLAs), photography is on the dark side but still acceptable for available light situation.

[Premier W.R. Bennett, ca. 1978]

News footage. Miscellaneous footage of Premier W.R. Bennett. On an open-line talk show at the CJVI radio studio, he discusses a study of the proposed fixed link to Vancouver Island. At a press conference, he compares federal subsidies to east and west coast provinces. At the Legislative Buildings, he welcomes Washington Governor Dixy Lee Ray, discusses the sale of gas to the U.S.A., takes part in "The Big Run for Little Brothers", etc.

Item consists of a mount of one group portrait of men and boys posed on the steps of the newly constructed B.C. Parliament Buildings. "Parliament of British Columbia, 1898. Blackie, Victoria West, B.C." is captioned on the card.

On the verso, a paper has been attached to the card by only its top edge. "P.O. Drawer 279. Angus Campbell & Co. Ltd. The Fashion Centre, 1008-1010 Government St., Victoria, B.C." is printed at the top. Below, the following is typed: "Members of Parliament, Officials, and Page Boys. 1st Row, left to right. Martin. Pooley. Turner. Baker. Semlin. Stoddart. Hume. 2nd [crossed out] Smith. Helmcken. McGregor. Rogers. Braden. Eberts. Mara. Walkem. Rithet. Williams. Kelly. 3rd [crossed out] Hunter. C. Pemberton. Fell. Adams. Higgins. Wolfiden. 4th [crossed out] Cotton. Bryden. Mutter. Huff." Next to the crossed out row numbers "Not in this order" is handwritten in pencil. "S. The series also contains files relating to the control of Japanese nationals during World War II.

Royal visit

The item is a release print of a documentary film made in 1951. The film shows Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh visiting Vancouver and Vancouver Island during their 1951 Canadian tour. Footage includes: inspection of RCAF honour guard outside CNR station, greeting by Mayor Fred Hume and the Princess's speech at Vancouver City Hall, appearance at Brockton Point Oval, visit to Shaughnessy Hospital and services at Christ Church Cathedral, crowds on West Vancouver waterfront and HMCS Crusader. In Victoria: parade with the Canadian Scottish Regiment and the Royal Canadian Artillery, Premier Byron Johnson greets the Princess at the Legislative Buildings, honour guard inspection and artillery salute, Cowichan and Alberni Indian dance performance at Thunderbird Park. Return to Vancouver harbour; motorcade up Kingsway Avenue, Burnaby Municipal Hall, Royal Train arrives at New Westminster, departure. There are also good (brief) shots of Kitsilano Boy's Band, Junior Forest Wardens, Major J.S. Matthews, Very Rev. Cecil Swanson (dean of Christ Church), and BC Provincial Police on motorcycles with sidecars.
