Cascade highway : footage

The item consists of a reel of unedited footage. This reel appears to include footage from both the two reels of original reversal film. Shows construction work on the Cascade Section of the Southern Trans-Provincial Highway, between Christina Lake and Rossland. Also includes footage of a couple in a convertible driving to Rossland on a narrow, unpaved and dusty road.

China Bar tunnel

The item is a reel of unedited film footage. Shows construction inside the China Bar tunnel (including "pumpcrete" lining), and its highway approaches.

Deas Island tunnel

The item is a reel of industrial film. It shows the planning and construction of the Deas Island Tunnel, and its official opening in July 1959 by Queen Elizabeth.

The series comprises motion picture film materal shot by and for the Dept. of Highways, mainly in the 1950s and 1960s. There are also a few brief items from ca.1935-1940s, presumably shot for the Dept. of Public Works. Most of the material consists of unedited (or rough-edited) footage documenting highway and bridge construction and maintenance around the province, along with a few items about ferry services. The series also contains a few complete film productions, including prints of "Deas Island Tunnel", "Highway on the Sea", "Men, Mountains and the Challenge", and "Rogers Pass", some of which were produced for Highways by the Photographic Branch of the Dept. of Recreation and Conservation.

Highway and bridge opening ceremonies, summer and fall 1962

The item is a compilation reel of film footage showing Christina Lake-Kinnaird highway opening (06-Oct-1962); Deas Island Thruway; Deas Tunnel toll removal; Upper Levels Highway. Trans-Canada Highway Motorcade leaving ferry at Swartz Bay; ceremony at B.C. Legislature (Premier Bennett speaking); Trans-Canada Highway ceremony at Mile 0, Victoria, with motorcade car dipping its front wheels in the Pacific. Federal government opening ceremony at Rogers Pass summit; Prime Minister Diefenbaker speaking. Old Alexandra Suspension Bridge; new Alexandra Bridge under construction, and opening ceremony (23/24-Oct-1962). Also includes aerial footage of highway construction.

Rogers Pass

The item is a reel of promotional film about the history of Rogers Pass and the construction of the section of the Trans-Canada Highway that runs through it. Includes a re-enactment of the pass's discovery in 1881 by Major A.B. Rogers.

Rogers Pass highway

The item consists of a promotional short film, including the original print and a duplicate print. Shows land clearing, surveying, and highway construction, including heavy equipment, blasting, and building of snowsheds. Winter scenes; military crew using howitzer to bring down potential snowslides. Aerial views of the mountainous landscape. Begins and ends with a couple in a convertible driving through Rogers Pass on the completed highway.

Second Narrows Bridge ; Kitimat ; Fraser Canyon ; Okanagan Lake Bridge

The item is a reel of unedited film footage containing a mixture of Highways-related footage shot in 1958. Includes sequences showing: the aftermath of the collapse of Second Narrows Bridge (during its construction); construction scenes from the Kitimat and Fraser Canyon highways; the newly-opened Okanagan Lake Bridge at Kelowna; unidentified footage.

Squamish highway

The item consists of two reels of unedited footage. Shows construction work on the Squamish Highway (between Horseshoe Bay and Squamish) and on the Fraser Canyon highway. Premier W.A.C. Bennett, Highways Minister Phil Gaglardi, and other dignitaries are seen at ceremonies.

Upper Levels Highway construction : footage

The item is a reel of unedited footage showing the construction of the Upper Levels Highway in North Vancouver and West Vancouver. Includes sequences on the ceremony marking the start of construction (with Highways Minister Phil Gaglardi); construction of Mosquito Bridge; excavation, grading, evening, levelling and paving work on the highway; aerial views of highway construction, Mosquito Bridge, and the vicinity; pouring and forming the concrete side guards.

Vancouver freeway

The item consists of a reel of unedited original film footage and a print copy. Content includes opening ceremonies (?), introduction of new construction vehicles, first stage construction work, and opening ceremonies at the Chilliwack end of the Trans-Canada Highway. Premier W.A.C. Bennett, Highways Minister Phil Gaglardi, and other dignitaries are shown at the various ceremonies.

Yellowhead highway

The item consists of a reel of Ektachrome original film footage of construction work on what is presumed to be the Yellowhead Highway.
