Centennial Committee photographs

The series consists of photographs and accompanying material acquired by the Centennial '58 Committee that show centennial projects, celebrations and participants from the British Columbia 1958 centennial. The committee received photographs, both prints and negatives, from around the province, which showcased community centennial activities. The series also includes photographs and filmstrips collected by the Canadian Confederation Centennial Committee and the Centennial '71 Committee. All three committees were chaired by L.J. Wallace, the Deputy Provincial Secretary. The majority of the photographs are arranged alphabetically by subject or community place name with some interspersed miscellaneous files.

The series consists of records created by the Commission of Inquiry into Redefinition of Electoral Districts in 1975.
Records include transcripts of proceedings, exhibits, correspondence and the final report.

The series also includes recorded hearings of the Commission held in Vernon, Kelowna, Revelstoke, Merritt, Cranbrook, Rossland, and Nelson in 1975.

Correspondence and exhibits were filed in no apparent order. Some pieces of correspondence and/or exhibits were numbered, but the numbers had no meaning for filing purposes. Neither an index nor a list of exhibits has been found.

The series consists of a correspondence register created by the Office of the Deputy Provincial Secretary between 1884 and 1940. The register includes the subject of the written inquiry, the dates transmitted and received and the name of to whom the inquiry was sent (usually the Deputy Provincial Secretary). In 1893 a sequential number was applied to each letter based on the year of receipt.

Deputy Provincial Secretary films

The series consists of motion picture film prints accumulated by L.J. (Lawrie) Wallace during his tenure as Deputy Provincial Secretary (1959-1977). Wallace was responsible for organizing British Columbia's celebrations in to mark the 1958, 1966, and 1971 centennials, as well as the B.C. component of the 1967 Canadian cetennial celebrations. Most of the these film document the celebrations of these various centennials and associated special events. The series includes several films produced by or for the Government of British Columbia, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, and the National Film Board of Canada, as well as individual fitles by various other production companies. Non-centennial-related titles include the travelogues "Beautiful British Columbia" (BC Government Travel Bureau, 1952), "Highway North" (Royalite Oil Company, 1957?), and "A Day of Fun in the Historical Town of Barkerville" (Werner Aellen for the Barkerville Restoration Advisory Committee, ca. 1963).

Speech from the Throne

The collection consists of an incomplete set of copies of the Speech from the Throne, created between 1872 and 2023. The collection was made by the BC Archives using copies of the speeches, including red-ribbon copies, drawn together from various government office sources.

The Speech from the Throne is given by the Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia who addresses the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia at its opening and/or closing sessions. The speech outlines the executive government's plans at the start of each session of the Legislative Assembly and reviews the accomplishments of the government at the end of each session.
