A story of barking drums featuring the "Weldrum" barker

Industrial film. The design, manufacture and operation of the "Weldrum" log barking system. Includes scenes at an Ingersoll-Rand plant (in Sherbrooke, P.Q.?) and at various mills, including the Anglo-Newfoundland Development Company, the Canadian International Paper Company in La Tuque (P.Q.), and at a Bowater Company operation (locale unknown).

Assignment safety : [out-takes]

Out-takes. ASSIGNMENT SAFETY was a four-part (70-minute) safety film for the lumber industry. In the film, Ned Dearborn, president of the National Safety Council (USA), examined the safety program endorsed by the BC Lumber Manufacturers Association. I: mill safety from the pond to the green chain. II: safe work practices in the sawmill. III: various types of guards and devices used in shops and sawmills. IV: emphasizes good safety programming.

Breakthrough

Industrial film. Mining crews drill and blast a 10-mile-long tunnel through Mount DuBose to carry water from the Kenney Dam to drive the generators at Kemano power plant for Alcan's Kitimat project. Ingersoll-Rand tunnelling equipment is featured.

The fonds consists of industrial, engineering, and public relations films created for or by British Columbia Hydro and Power Authority and its predecessors (the British Columbia Electric Company and the British Columbia Power Commission) from 1945 to about 1984. This material includes 164 unique film items in 16 mm film, each containing one or more printing elements such as prints, sound tracks, negative reels, selected out-takes and unedited footage. In some cases, there are no edited prints, only miscellaneous reels of footage.

Most of the BC Electric and BC Hydro films are the work of Vancouver producer Lew M. Parry. The fonds also includes a number of non-Hydro films produced by Parry, as well as a selection of prints and film material relevant to BC which had been circulated through (or stored at) Hydro's film library.

Out-takes. An overview of the training and career opportunities in mining and related industries. Shows mining students at UBC and BCIT, plus various mining, smelting and research facilities throughout BC.

Challenge in the rock

Industrial film. An overview of the mining industry of British Columbia and the Yukon. Sequences include: prospecting; claim staking; the use of helicopters; core sampling; construction of mine access roads; planning the mining of an ore body; lead-zinc mining operations in the Sullivan Mine; processing of ore by crushers, ball mills and flotation cells; residential scenes in mining towns (Fraser Lake, Pine Point, Ashcroft); Cominco smelter at Trail; contribution to steel industry (pig iron and coke); training of mining technicians at BCIT; role of the BC & Yukon Chamber of Mines, including its Prospectors' Mining School; Vancouver and Port Moody dockside scenes showing concentrates, coal and ingots being loaded.

Cima Mines Chile : heap leaching of copper

Industrial film. The company's mining operations in Chile, especially the heap leaching process used to concentrate copper from ore. Scenes of mine sites and facilities, as well as the city of Santiago.

Deadline for pressure

Industrial film. The construction of Compressor Station No. 1 on the Alberta-California gas pipeline, located between Fernie and Turtle Mountain in the Rockies. The compressor was built for the Alberta Natural Gas Company by Marwell Construction.

[Downtown parking] : [out-takes]

Out-takes. Illustrates Vancouver's downtown parking problems. The outs here accessioned, found in a can labelled "Roy's Traffic," are on 1953 stock and are thought to be from the film DOWNTOWN PARKING. The roll includes many excellent shots of dense traffic (including streetcars and buses) on downtown streets, and on the Burrard Street and Cambie Street bridges.

Includes fishing boats at dock; crewmen examining and mending nets and preparing boats; Vancouver skyline from waterfront; many shots of fishing fleet under way and leaving Vancouver harbour (passing under Lion's Gate bridge); a CPR ferry; blocks of ice en route to the boats. (The fishing boats include "Aleutian Queen", "Combat" and "Pacific Belle".) The roll concludes with footage showing a fisheries technician counting fingerlings at Cultus Lake.

Out-takes. The value to good health of Nutri vitamin supplements. As part of the company's marketing plan, prints of the film were to be sold to independent salesman, along with the vitamins (and a film projector). In the USA, a similar plan using slide shows and filmstrips proved more successful.

Kitimat story : [revised version]

Industrial film. The building of Kitimat smelter, the Kemano tunnel (through Mt. DuBose) and the power transmission line from Kemano to Kitimat. Also scenes of smelter operation and port facilities. Updates the 1954 film of the same title.

Industrial film. An overview of the Alcan development of Kitimat -- Kenney Dam on the Nechako River; Kemano power plant; the Kitimat smelter, which ships aluminum all over the world; and the community of Kitimat itself.
