Collection consists of moving images collected or acquired by the BC Archives from a wide variety of donors. Subjects include the entire range of British Columbia history and cover most geographic areas of the province. They include commercially produced industrial and promotional films as well as amateur productions.

British Columbia Lotteries advertisements

The item consists of a video containing six television commercials produced in 1979 for the B.C. Lotteries Branch.

Different tune -- different drummer

The item is an educational film. It is a drug abuse prevention film, aimed at school children. In a classroom, students watch a movie about drugs (including marijuana, hashish, LSD, amphetamines, barbituates, heroin, etc.), and consider the impact that drug use could have on their lives. Filmed at Kerrisdale School in Vancouver.

In the daytime : 1986 restored version

The item is a restored copy of a documentary film by Stan Fox. It is an impressionistic portrait of city life during a day off in the summertime, with poetic narration set opposite some very observant and intimate views of Vancouver and its inhabitants. These include numerous street scenes; departure of the passenger ferry "Hollyburn"; shots of and from Interurban railway and streetcars; sequences on Chinatown, Kitsilano Beach, Stanley Park, Victory Square, and the downtown waterfront; and a glimpse inside a typical beer parlour. The film received honourable mention in the amateur category at the 1950 Canadian Film Awards.

The freedom to move

The item is a videocassette of a promotional video from 1988. It is a profile of the Transportation Planning Overview study, and the necessity of long-term planning to meet the challenges of tomorrow. Video version of a slide-tape presentation.

Hill 60

The item is a video tape containing footage of Mayo Lumber Co. operations, including the mill at Paldi, the development of Hill 60, and the building and operation of the railroad. The photographer was a friend of the Mayo family.

Northern resources unlimited

The item is a reel of industrial film. It depicts mineral prospecting by helicopter in the northwest corner of British Columbia and the southern Yukon. The film begins at Atlin, BC, and proceeds south to Tulsequah and north to Whitehorse, Yukon. Mostly aerial views of terrain and wildlife, as well as ground level shots of mines, etc. Footage of the sternwheeler "Whitehorse". Discussion of the Alaska Highway's importance in providing access to natural resources.

Webster! : 1978-11-22 : excerpt

The item is an off-air video recording of the Jack Webster show of November 22, 1978. Guests and topics for this episode are: the recent Judge Erik Bendrodt case. He reviews the Judicial Code of Ethics, and a report from the Judicial Council of British Columbia regarding charges against Judge Bendrodt, including dishonourable personal conduct, that is, purchasing the services of a prostitute; and unable to perform duties while disabled by alcoholism.

Ministry of Labour advertisements

The item consists of a video containing two television commercials produced for the Employment Standards Branch of the Ministry of Labour in 1981. The commercials outline the basic responsibilities of British Columbia employers under the Employment Standards Act.

McKay Lake

The item is a video copy of an amateur film, originally made ca. 1947. Shows Mayo Lumber Company operations near Nanaimo, including sawmill, railway and log booming operations.

Night mail

The item is a reel of documentary film depicting the collection and sorting of mail on the London-Edinburgh night train, and the delivery of mail. Features poetic narration by poet W.H. Auden. Produced for the GPO under John Grierson's coordination.

The item is a reel of amateur film. Shows Victoria Day parade, go-cart races at Island View beach, motorcycle races at Pedder Bay. Also a house move and a friend's new outboard motor.

Sproat Lake, etc.

The item is a reel of amateur film. It shows family leisure activities on Vancouver Island, mostly water sports. Includes shots of Parksville, Cameron Lake, Taylor River, Great Central Lake, Sproat Lake, Qualicum Beach, Cowichan Lake, Port Renfrew, Horne Lake; also an air show performance by "The Red Knight".

Trail of the sourdoughs : part 2

The item is a reel of travelogue film. Includes footage of the White Pass and Yukon Route, with scenes at White Pass summit (on the Alaska/BC border), Carcross, and Whitehorse. Prospectors and mining equipment are shown, as are the Yukon Ivory Shop and Sam McGee's cabin at Whitehorse.

The item consists of a video interview recorded in 1982. The interview is with Grace McCarthy, Minister of Human Resources, Evan Wolfe, Minister of Provincial Secretary and Government Services and Ms. Leslie Arnold, Manager of the Family and Childrens' Service Division. The group discuss child abuse protection services available through the Ministry of Human Resources.

Camera west promotional excerpts

The item is a promotional video compiled by the Sound and Moving Image Division of the Provincial Archives of BC. The excerpts were assembled for television interviews promoting the Archives publication "Camera West: British Columbia on Film, 1941-1965".
