The image design includes overlapping portraits of children within a rectangular shape with rounded edges. The bottom left corner of the shape appears curled up, creating a space for featuring eight Gem images from previous years. Some of Maynard's “Statuary from Life” children are shown in the bottom left of the image. "Gems of British Columbia Greet You, 1889, Mrs. R. Maynard's Studio, Victoria, B.C." is spelled out around the outer edges of the image.

The image design includes the shape of a crown (with portraits of children situated inside), with an oval jewel at the bottom centre of the crown and three sets of crossing flags. Gems from 1881-1887 are set within the flags and jewel, which are labeled with the corresponding year. The photograph commemorates the Golden Jubilee year of Queen Victoria.

Located beside the left flag in the centre of the work is a child from the pioneering Spotts family, likely Cecillia Spotts.

The image design includes the shape of an inverted horseshoe with additional embellishments. "Gems of British Columbia" is printed at the bottom centre and "1892" has been written near the centre of the image. Portraits taken the previous year and Gems from 1881-1891 are included. Approximately 22,000 images were used to create the photocollage.

Item consists of one photograph from the Gems of British Columbia works by Hannah Maynard, part of a series of photocollages created in the 1880s and 1890s. The image design includes a central star with fourteen stars placed around the central shape. Portraits of babies are placed in smaller stars. The fountain from a previous Gems of British Columbia work is located in the bottom left and right corners. The Gems of British Columbia work attributed to 1892 is featured at the bottom centre of the composition which contain tiny versions of earlier Gem begonia works. This negative does appear to have been manipulated. There are details in pencil that include dots, markings that finish the shape of the smallest stars and markings that create branches with leaves or flowers drawn around babies located in the larger stars. These are drawn on the plate adding embellishment to the final image. The following text is present on the image: Gems of British Columbia 1893. Two tongs and the sides of a chair are visible, holding the framed work up to be photographed in an unknown location. A pillow or cushion can be seen behind the photographic work. It is attributed to being the Gem for 1893.
