Photos of Ogden Point construction

The file consists of 14 black and white photographs showing the construction of the Ogden Point grain elevator in Victoria, BC. The photos were taken in 1927 and 1928. Most of the photographs have a stamp from that of Victoria photographer Harold Fleming. Many are also dated. The photos show the area around Ogden Point and show the pier as well as the construction of the grain elevator building.

Included in the accession is a fairly worn envelope that presumably had housed the photos at one point. The address on the envelope is that of Harold Fleming Esq., 1014 Government Street, Victoria. The return address is that of D.P.W., Box 920, Victoria. On the envelope is a handwritten note in black ink that says Dad's engineering pictures.

Photo and BCER plans

Includes 1 black and white group portrait (with identification), ca. 1912, of workers at BCER; 9 plans of BCER lines, proposed routes including Victoria and Sidney Railway and Victoria Terminal.

Journal and I.O.O.F. certificate

The file contains a photocopy of a journal kept by Axel Bentzon (in Danish with English summary by author), and an I.O.O.F. certificate. Bentzon worked in the Pacific Northwest from 1910-1915, as a labourer, driver, carpenter, etc.

William Davis records relating to relief camps

William Davis came to Canada, aged 18, in 1934 under the agricultural workers scheme. On leaving his assigned farm, he was unable to find employment. Later, he settled in Victoria and operated the Window Shade Shop.

The file includes three certificates of termination of employment, Dept. of National Defense Projects, Unemployed Relief Camps, Mara Lake (1934), Spuzzum (1936), and Pender Harbour (1935). List of clothing on loan from the Unemployment Relief Project.

The file also contains eight photographs of Davis and other labourers at "Floods camp" at mile 59 on the Big Bend Highway.

The London Gazette Extraordinary

The item consists of one sheet marked "Copy - The London Gazette Extraordinary." The sheet was published at Whitehall on August 5, 1790. The sheet includes a translation of a declaration by the Comte de Florida Blanca regarding the capture of certain vessels belonging to his subjects in the Port of Nootka.

John Waddell diary

The diary documents the journey of miner John Waddell (1818-1870) to Vancouver Island in 1862 in search of gold during the Cariboo Gold Rush. Also included are notes on his journey to San Francisco in early 1862 aboard the California steamer Northern Light. The diary also describes his dealings with George A. Walkem, third Premier of British Columbia.

The transcript, completed by the donor in May 2017, includes and introduction and notes relevant to the diary's content.

History of the K.L.O. Benches, their tragedies and comedies / Thomas Leslie Gillespie

The file consists of "History of the K.L.O. Benches, their tragedies and comedies": the reminiscences of T.L. Gillespie who moved to east Kelowna in 1910 and operated his orchard on the Lower Bench until 1922 with the exception of the war years when he served at the internment camps at Vernon and Kapuskasing. Includes capsule descriptions of most of his neighbours in East Kelowna.

The file consists of a Christmas card ca. 196-? from Winnifred and Huntley Kirkpatrick to "Jean" that contains 2 photographic print copies of the S.S. Oscar at Wadham's Cannery in Rivers Inlet. The photographs were taken in 1897 by E.A. Wadham, Winnifred Kirkpatricks grandfather.

Letters relating to municipal elections in the City of Victoria

The file consists of three letters relating to municipal elections in the City of Victoria, written by City Clerk William Leigh. The first, 25 January 1872, is to the Registrar of the Supreme Court (Richard Woods) to notify him of the election of Richard Lewis as mayor; the second, 29 January 1872 (also to Woods) notifies him of the election of James D. Robinson as councilor for James Bay Ward; and the third, 29 January 1872, is to the Chief Justice regarding oaths of office for Lewis and Robinson.

Pharmaceutical ephemera

The file contains a collection of pharmaceutical ephemera including diplomas awarded to John Cochrane, Cyrus Harbert Bowes, Joseph H. Emery, and Thomas Shotbolt; posters commemorating pharmacists Thomas Shotbolt and Thomas M. Henderson and a bottle label from Shotbolt's Drug Store.
