In order to meet recruitment goals, the 143rd Battalion started accepting taller men into their unit, which may explain this man's presence. In the second picture, three Bantam soldiers pose together in front of canvas tents.

143rd Battalion await boarding

Photograph depicts the 143rd Battalion (BC Bantams) on the docks of the CPR station at Victoria's Inner Harbour as they await boarding. They can be seen here with their full equipment kits. Civilians line the streets further down the dock. The turn out for the Bantams' departure was impressive. They were initially going to be sent overseas as a railway construction battalion but were later broken up for reinforcements.

143rd Battalion Band

It is possible that a few members of 231st Battalion band are also present as one of the drums in the picture has the logo of the Seaforth Highlanders and both battalions were training at the camp in Sidney at the same time. Sitting on the bass drum is Rags, the 143rd Battalion's terrier mascot.
