Challenge in the rock

Industrial film. An overview of the mining industry of British Columbia and the Yukon. Sequences include: prospecting; claim staking; the use of helicopters; core sampling; construction of mine access roads; planning the mining of an ore body; lead-zinc mining operations in the Sullivan Mine; processing of ore by crushers, ball mills and flotation cells; residential scenes in mining towns (Fraser Lake, Pine Point, Ashcroft); Cominco smelter at Trail; contribution to steel industry (pig iron and coke); training of mining technicians at BCIT; role of the BC & Yukon Chamber of Mines, including its Prospectors' Mining School; Vancouver and Port Moody dockside scenes showing concentrates, coal and ingots being loaded.

Good general and aerial views of Vancouver, plus sequences on the harbour, Vancouver International Airport, Stanley Park, UBC, the Vancouver International Festival and the PNE. Industry is depicted through shots of a sawmill, a fish cannery, a foundry and a shipyard (where the vessel Yukon is launched). Water sports, golf and skiing at Grouse Mountain are shown, as well as Queen Elizabeth Park, Capilano Suspension Bridge, the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, Granville Street at night and a White Spot drive-in.

Footage. Two rolls of aerial views, presumably culled from various outs for use as stock footage. The first roll, compiled from stock dated 1957 and 1960, shows Second Narrows, False Creek, Stanley Park, Fraser Valley and the Coast mountains, with some overall shots of Vancouver. The second roll, on stock dated 1954 and 1955, consists of low-level aerial views of downtown Vancouver, Burrard Inlet and a logging camp (?); "tilt-ups" from the CPR docks to the North Shore mountains; and some high-level aerial views of the city, one of which is on 1947 stock.

[St. Roch : final berth, 1958]

Unedited footage. The RCMP vessel "St. Roch" (seen from Stanley Park and from another vessel) is towed under Lion's Gate Bridge. At Haddon Park on English Bay, a wooden track and crib are prepared to beach her. Various shots of the "St. Roch" in the crib and on a permanent cement emplacement.

Out-takes. A record of the 1956 PNE in Vancouver. These outs include general views of Exhibition Park, miscellaneous scenes on the fairgrounds, the midway games and rides, the Miss PNE pageant, agricultural exhibits, the dog show, a fashion show and the horse races, as well as the PNE parade.

Out-takes. Illustrates Vancouver's downtown parking problems. The outs here accessioned, found in a can labelled "Roy's Traffic," are on 1953 stock and are thought to be from the film DOWNTOWN PARKING. The roll includes many excellent shots of dense traffic (including streetcars and buses) on downtown streets, and on the Burrard Street and Cambie Street bridges.

Out-takes. Footage showing the construction of the Granville Street bridge over False Creek in Vancouver. Includes views of the city fronting on False Creek and of the old Granville bridge swingspan.

Out-takes. Plant operations at the J.R. Murray plant in Vancouver, on the north arm of the Fraser River. Includes shots of the various stages of plywood manufacture and the making of doors.

Industrial film. Natural gas as an energy resource for BC. Shows uses of and demand for natural gas; natural gas exploration and drilling in the Peace River area; planning and construction of pipelines to carry gas from the Peace area to Vancouver and the USA.

Trees for tomorrow : 1956 edition

Industrial film. MacMillan Bloedel's approach to forest management and reforestation. Includes scenes of logging operations, forest fire fighting (Northwest Bay Division, Nanoose Bay), burned-over forest, Beaufort Tree Farm, tree planting, etc. Also brief shots of Vancouver (Hastings St.) and Victoria.

Shows the three main elements of traffic safety (enforcement, engineering and education), and illustrates various causes of traffic accidents. Includes aerial views of Vancouver; sequence on accident scene at south end of Burrard Bridge; fire-fighting, road repairs and parades as causes of traffic congestion; Cambie Street bridge swing-span in operation; Vancouver Motor Vehicle Inspection Station; driver training (McKinley Driving Schools Ltd.); Vancouver Police; etc.
