  • PR-2370

  • 1903-1947

  • 1872-1889; 1900-1916

Several different kinds of warrants are included, such as warrants to apprehend a suspect, warrants to commit someone to gaol and search warrants.

Records from 1872-1889 were grouped together in several volumes beginning with a cardboard name tag; these have been broken into multiple files for preservation. They are arranged mostly chronologically and all include a mixture of different types of records. Some records relate to the Comox District. Files 9 to 16 are not arranged chronologically and include a range of dates that overlap with other volumes.

Most records from 1900-1916 are signed by Stipendiary Magistrate, J.H. Simpson. These forms were removed from a Shannon file where the order of filing was broadly (not strictly) chronological.

Nanaimo Supreme Court orders and judgments

  • GR-2308
  • Series
  • 1900-1995

The series consists of reasons for judgment and civil court orders dating from 1900 to 1995. Divorce orders are interfiled throughout. Records in this series are generally arranged by volume and folio number. While the series mainly consists of civil orders, there are also several boxes of reasons for judgment. Civil court orders are the formal expression of the rulings of the court, whereas the reasons for judgment are the explanation that the court gives at the conclusion of a hearing, explaining why an order is being made.

Files in containers 831029-0001 to 831029-0048 were originally housed in shannon folders upon their transferal to the Archives. For preservation purposes, these records were re-housed in acid free folders. The original shannon files were arranged by volume, with each volume contained in one file that generally ran from folios 1 to 200. The archivist has divided each shannon file into two acid-free folders. However, the original arrangement has been otherwise maintained, and the volume number is evident in the file title. A style of cause index was usually included at the top of each shannon folder; this has been placed at the beginning of the second folder for each volume. Shannon files were originally arranged by order number, with the first order in each volume located at the back of the file. This order has been maintained in the acid-free folders, so lower-numbered folios are towards the back of each file. Reasons for judgment were not intermingled, but rather were housed separately in accordion files.
