Brave new north

The item is a video copy of a promotional film. It shows mining in the Yukon, yesterday and today, and the importance of the White Pass and Yukon Railway as a transportation system. Shows the development and start-up of the Anvil Mine, a lead-zinc mine on the Ross River; its impact on the port of Skagway and the upgrading of transport infrastructure. The first shipment of ore travels by truck to Whitehorse, by rail to Skagway, and by ship to world markets.

The item is a video copy of a promotional film. It depicts mines and mineral resources in the North -- Alaska, Yukon Territory, Northwest Territories and northern B.C. -- and the role played by the White Pass and Yukon Route. The White Pass container ship "Frank M. Brown" leaves Vancouver and sails to Skagway, where its cargo is unloaded through modern technology. The freight is shipped by rail to Whitehorse, where it is transferred to trucks for transport to various mining operations. Mining of asbestos (Cassiar), copper (Whitehorse), silver-lead-zinc (Mayo), tungsten and lead (Ross River), and iron (Snake River). White Pass's involvement: efficient tranportation, integrated equipment, and increased freight tonnages.

Great rain mountain

The item is a travelogue film. Shot in the St. Elias Mountains of the Yukon Territory, this film portrays the silent land, filmed in colours of mist, hailstorms and sunpaint, underscored by an electronic music composition. With scenes of moose, dall sheep, caribou, tundra vole and hills of gold.

International Fact Finding Committee (Canada-United States, 1931)

This series contains International Fact Finding Committee records to October 1931. In the early 1930s, separate Canadian and American committees (Canadian 1931, US 1930) were formed to study the proposed B.C.-Yukon-Alaska highway. The two committees met as a joint fact finding committee in Victoria in 1931. The Canadian committee did not publish a report but reported the results of its investigation to the U.S. Dept. of the Interior. The published report of the American commission contains information collected by the Canadian committee. This volume, which contains material relating to the study and the joint meeting, consists of notes on the joint meeting, route reconnaissance reports, preliminary construction estimates and individual reports on mineral, forest and water resources in the proposed route areas of British Columbia (2 copies).

Kluane, Yukon Territory

The item is a travelogue film. The Victoria filmmaker Wilf Gray, and his wife present the terrain and wildlife of the Kluane Game Preserve in the Yukon, a scenic mountain wilderness area. They focus on creatures of the river valley and the St. Elias Mountains, such as the grizzly bear, dall sheep and caribou.

Records relating to CANOL project and Alaska Highway

This series contains records relating to the CANOL Project and the Alaskan Highway. The CANOL (Canadian Oil) pipeline project, conceived in response to fears of a Japanese invasion of Alaska, 1942, consisted of the construction of a road and pipeline from the Norman Wells (NWT) oil field to a refinery at Whitehorse which served as a junction for pipelines to Alaska and Alberta to supply refined petroleum products necessary for the defense of Alaska and the Canadian North. This body of records, part of the National Archives and Records Service's Record Group 338 - Records of the United States Army Commands, consists of general orders. international agreements, organization manuals, reports, briefs, correspondence and administrative records relating to the CANOL Project and the Alaskan Highway.

This series consists of photocopied records from Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Bennett Detachment. Records include police constables' daily journal (1899-1900); register of persons entering and leaving Yukon Territory via Bennett, B.C. (Dec. 1898-July 1900); register of persons passing through Dawson (Dec. 1898-May 1899); and steamer passenger lists and registration of boats passing through Tagish, Yukon Territory, (1898-1900).

The item is a video copy of an industrial film. It depicts the steps taken to transport 3,000 tons of oil search equipment from Vancouver to Bell River in the northern Yukon, where three companies -- Amerada, Marathon and Hudson's Bay -- combined to drill a well. BC footage includes White Pass and Yukon steamer going up the coast, and White Pass and Yukon Route from Skagway to Whitehorse.

The item is a video copy of a travelogue. It shows the attractions of Alaska and the Yukon Territory; includes CN's "Northland Prince" leaving Vancouver harbour and sailing up the Inside Passage to Alaska. Narration includes excerpts from the poetry of Robert W. Service.
