Documents pertaining to Fairbridge Farm School, a residential and educational community for underprivileged British children, located near Duncan. Includes visitors books (1935-1953) and roll book of Fairbridge school staff (1935-1950). Also includes scrapbook and diary of school nurse, Margaret (nee King) Minchen (1940-1942). Photographs transferred to Visual Records accession 198706-2.

Diaries (5 vols.): Aug 5, 1862 - Apr 3, 1863, and Apr 1 - Sep 12, 1867; Nov 24, 1867 - Apr 15, 1868, and Jun 28-29, 1868; 1862; 1883; and 1884. Entries describe Marriner's voyage from England around Cape Horn to Victoria in 1862 and his life, work, expenditures and receipts at his farms at Somenos and Cowichan Bay. Volume 2, 1867-1868, contains detailed reports of sermons heard at Anglican Church services he attended.

King's Daughters' Hospital (Duncan) records

Minutes, Board of Directors, 1915-1959; minutes of annual general meetings, 1931-1951; reports of Matron to House Committee, 1923-1931; annual reports, 1947-1981 (some missing); patients' record book, 1927-1933.

King's Daughters' Hospital was built in Duncan, B.C., in 1910, by the local Order of King's Daughters. Administration of the hospital was taken over by the Cowichan District Hospital Association in 1931, and the original building was replaced in 1967. The records consist of minutes of the Board of Directors, of annual general meetings, reports of the matron to the House Committee, annual reports and a patients record book of the hospital.

Register of land pre-emptions and other material

This series consists of one volume entitled "Mr. Morley's Old Book Land Records - List of Squatters on Railway Lands p. 51". The volume is a register of land pre-emptions, certificates of improvement, purchases and transfers, 1867-1879. Entries include a date, pre-emption or certificate number, district name, personal or corporate name, number of acres, range and section or "unsurveyed" and name of land recorder, John. Morley. The districts include Comiaken, Somenos, Quamichan, Cowichan, Shawnigan, and Salt Spring Island, Portland Island, Thetis Island, Pender Island, Mayne Island and Saturna Island. Entries on pages 51-54 list squatters on Esquimalt and Nanaimo Railway land, 1877-1884 indicating the date, name, district (includes above plus Chemainus), section and number of acres. There is also a single sheet letter from Chad Wallader Blayney, June 13, 1876, requesting land.
