Series consists of 1902-1982 closed estate files from the Public Trustee Guardian or its predecessor Official Administrators for Dawson Creek, Fernie, Fort St. John, Golden, Grand Forks, Kamloops, Merritt, Prince Rupert, Princeton, Smithers, and Vancouver. Estate files include records related to the closing of a person’s estate. This can include the proving of a will, the settling of an estate when an individual died without a valid will (i.e., intestate), or if they died with a valid will but no executors willing or able to administer the estate (e.g., when all family and/or heirs reside outside of BC). Records may include an inventory of belongings, affidavits regarding relationships with others, claims from creditors, requests for payment by debtors, correspondence with other government entities including the governments of a deceased person’s home country, general family and financial information, personal correspondence, and possibly photographs and other ephemera.

Records in this series are covered by the Public Trustee ORCS (schedule 870366), under secondary classification 38240-60 – Closed estate administration files from which selected documents have not been removed.

The series consists of ca. 2200 individual map sheets acquired by the Provincial Archives from various sources over time. They include both Federal and Provincial topographic maps, all created using the National Topographic System of Canada.

A topographic map is a two-dimensional representation of the Earth's three-dimensional landscape and is a detailed and accurate illustration of fabricated and natural features on the ground; including roads, railways, power transmission lines, contours, elevations, rivers, lakes and geographical names. The map legends have a listing of all features and their corresponding symbols. The map border will generally provide information about the map scale, year and edition of a map, as well as the land district and map sheet area numbers.

The NTS system, first used in 1926, divides all of Canada into a series of areas, defined by a combination of numbers and letters. On a key map, the first area is identified with a dark grey number. Within that number, the area is divided into 16 smaller areas defined by lighter grey lines. Each of these 16 areas is labelled with a light grey letter from A to P and represents the second element in an NTS map number for a 1:250 000 scale map.

Each lighter grey extent is further sub-divided into 16 areas defined by fine black lines, each labelled from 1 to 16. This is the final element in an NTS map number for a 1:50 000 scale map.

This series of NTS maps were individually registered by sheet and then each was given a call number that combined the scale with the NTS number element. The cardinal points and dates of publications may also form part of the call number. The range is as follows:

Series consists of a Nanaimo coroner's office record book for 1866-1905. Inquest (inquisition) entries can include: name of the deceased, cause of death, date of death, date of inquest, name of the coroner, names of the jurors, and the name of the medical officer. Accidental or unusual deaths, some of which may have been the subject of inquiries, are also listed. There is also a loose list of accidental deaths in the Nanaimo district prior to 1866.

Entries are arranged chronologically.

The fonds consists of an illustrated diary written in a school exercise book of William Law Ogilby's experience as a chainman on a survey of a portion of the western boundary of the Esquimalt & Nanaimo Railway Belt on Vancouver Island in 1892. A photograph, presumed to have been taken on the survey, depicts Ogilby and two other men at their camp at an unidentified location.

The fonds consists of Graham's correspondence regarding the history of the Kootenay region, including letters from Reverend Nicolas Coccola.

The series consists of a photocopied file list of "O" series (O files) correspondence files, showing disposition of files. It was created by the Surveys and Land Records Branch in 1982 from a computer print-out.

The fonds consists of letterpress copies of outgoing correspondence and inward correspondence of Robert Beaven, including records pertaining to his estate.

The fonds consists of 161 35 mm colour slides and four large slides predominantly depicting logging camps and equipment in British Columbia, between 1969-1987. The logging camps and locations captured in the slides are: Port McNeill, Rayonier Logging Camp; Jeune Landing, Port Alice; Denham Bay Logging Camp; and Nimpkish Logging Camp.

There are also slides depicting Vancouver, the construction of BC Place in 1982-1983, and Ladysmith.

This series consists of miscellaneous land records. Includes register of deeds for towns of Hope and Yale to Feb. 1861; various pre-emption claims for Yale District, April - May 1861.

This series consists of a Douglas Land District land register from Range 1, Section 1 to Range 8, Section 20 on Vancouver Island. Entries date from 1864-1865. The registers record the land in numerical order and records the alienation of land from the Crown (by purchase, preemption, lease, etc.). Information may include the name of the purchaser, dates and numbers of certificates issued (including Crown Grants), dates and amounts of payments, and reference numbers to correspondence files and field books. The volume contains an alphabetical name index.

This series consists of Yale Division of Yale Land District subdivision lot registers for the Hope townsite from 1859-1862. The records are arranged numerically by block and lot number and record the alienation of land from the Crown by purchase. Information may include name of the purchaser, dates and numbers of certificates issued, and dates and amounts of payments.

This series contains a proclamation revoking the commission of Vancouver Island governor Edward Arthur Kennedy and asserting the authority of the governor of the (united) colony of British Columbia [i.e. Seymour].

The series is a handwritten, verbatim account of the "Confederation debate," held in colonial legislature, March 1870. This file is an incomplete recording of the debate.

The series consists of a copy of a 1981 file check list to Lands correspondence "O" files (or O series) 1918 to 1970, created by the Surveys and Land Records Branch.

The checklist lists O file numbers 1 to 40,000, arranged numerically. Inactive files, which were transferred to the BC Archives in 1980 and 1981 and returned to Crown Land Registry in 1997, have been annotated in the list with an original box number.

Use this list to determine whether a Lands "O" file is in the custody of the Crown Land Registry by finding the file number in the list and checking to see if there is an annotation next to it. If there is, contact Crown Land Registry for access.
If no annotation appears, check the file disposition list (GR-1225) for further information about other possible locations of files. Files may have been microfilmed, been transferred to another ministry or may have remained active with Crown Land Registry all along.

This series consists of one volume titled “Waddington Massacre : Minutes of the Evidence” related to the Tsilhqot'in War, also historically referred to as the Chilcotin uprising and Bute Inlet massacre. The notebook is mostly blank but was used to record several kinds of information, including: diary entries; draft letters; transcriptions of hearings and statements; sketches and diagrams; accounting information relating to expenditures; and an unrelated County Court schedule for 1868.

The diary entries cover the period June 6 to July 12, 1864. The creator is unclear, but it may have been written by William George Cox, Gold Commissioner and Magistrate for the Cariboo region, or someone in the group of men who travelled with him from Alexandria in an attempt to apprehend the Indigenous men allegedly involved in the deaths of several settlers. This group was referred to as the Alexandria expedition. This estimation is based on the events and dates in the diary and their similarity to Cox’s expedition as described in related colonial despatches. The expedition resulted in the arrest and execution of six Tsilhqot’in Chiefs.

The notebook also includes several sworn statements from witnesses related to events of the Tsilhqot'in War.

The series is an indexed letter book kept by the Lands and Works Department from 1864 to 1868. The first part of the book is an alphabetical index which lists the correspondence by subject or name and the page number for that particular letter. From pages 25 to 588, there are letter book copies of correspondence outward from Acting Surveyor General B.W. Pearse to various colonial officials, along with follow up notes and memos and copies of some correspondence inward. The correspondence covers all matters to do with lands and public works.

This series consists of statistical information related to private and independent school enrollment and curriculum for the years 1964-1979. Some statistics were collected for the Dominion Bureau of Statistics and Statistics Canada. Information relates to student demographics, teachers, length of instructional time, and subjects offered.

The volume contains copies of correspondence from Hudson's Bay Company House in London to Colonial Surveyor J.D. Pemberton and Governor James Douglas, as well as individual letters from Douglas and other Colonial officials to Pemberton and Pearse bound into the book. There are also lists of reports issued by Pemberton and extracts from minutes of council regarding regulations for the sale of land, letters and papers regarding the Race Rocks lighthouse, and correspondence relating to the Union of the colonies of Vancouver Island and British Columbia.

Letterbook of correspondence outward from Official Administrator, J.C. Prevost, 1890-1895.

This series consists of records of the Commission on Victoria Police Commissioners, 1910. Commissioner Peter S. Lampman was appointed March 24, 1910 to inquire into the actions of the Victoria Police commissioners in response to allegations of corruption. The investigation centered on the actions of the Police Commissioners in regard to bawdy houses and gambling establishments in the Chinatown area.

The series contains a letterbook of correspondence outward, dating from 7 January 1918 to 21 January 1918 (1 vol.). The book includes letters of the Chief Forester, the Deputy Minister of Lands, and the departmental accountant. Included with the records is a nominal index.
