Series consists of 1902-1982 closed estate files from the Public Trustee Guardian or its predecessor Official Administrators for Dawson Creek, Fernie, Fort St. John, Golden, Grand Forks, Kamloops, Merritt, Prince Rupert, Princeton, Smithers, and Vancouver. Estate files include records related to the closing of a person’s estate. This can include the proving of a will, the settling of an estate when an individual died without a valid will (i.e., intestate), or if they died with a valid will but no executors willing or able to administer the estate (e.g., when all family and/or heirs reside outside of BC). Records may include an inventory of belongings, affidavits regarding relationships with others, claims from creditors, requests for payment by debtors, correspondence with other government entities including the governments of a deceased person’s home country, general family and financial information, personal correspondence, and possibly photographs and other ephemera.
