Requisitions from the Government Agent Lytton and Spences Bridge
Series consists of requisitions from the Government Agent of Lytton and Spences Bridge. Requisitions were invoices sent to the Treasury Department requesting reimbursement for expenses. The records were created between 1880-1887 and are signed by Government Agent Frederick Hussey.
The requisitions relate to the administration of justice, public works, revenue services, transportation and miscellaneous. The expenses include costs for roads, bridges, court costs, coroner costs, special constables, payment of jurors and office expenses.
The forms record the following financial information: vote (account) number, abstract of payments made, amount of funds required, date of payment and amount paid. The Auditor was responsible for approving the requisition.

Financial cash journals and requisitions
Series consists of financial journals created for financial reconciliations at the end of each month. The records date from 1859-1879 and include information from both the Colony of British Columbia (1859-1871) and the Province of British (1871-1879).
There is one volume for each year with the exception of 1869 and 1871. The colony created “original” and “duplicate” volumes in 1869. In 1871, the Treasurer created separate journals to delineate the end of the colony and the beginnings of the province.
The volumes provide monthly financial data as opposed to the day to day entry information of the cash books in GR-3053. The volumes include debits and credits in accordance with double entry accounting. Since this is high level monthly data, the journal uses the term “sundries” as a way to summarize the daily debits and credits that is captured in other financial records. There are also references to the volume and pages in ledgers and “waste books” (cash books).
The journals contain subaccounts for different regions of the Province although the list of regions varies in each volume. Regions listed in some of the volumes include New Westminster, Kootenay, Cariboo, Yale, Lillooet, Nanaimo, Columbia, Cassiar, Omineca, Clinton, Kamloops, Quesnel, Douglas and Fort Shepard.
There are gaps in the series. Some of the journals from 1860-1863 were described as part of GR-4169 (see GR-4169 volumes 10, 11, 17). The 1864 and 1872 volumes are missing.
The creators of the records, and the years that they were responsible for the records, are as follows:

Vancouver Supreme Court civil cause books and case record cards
This series consists of cause books and case record cards from the Vancouver Supreme Court for civil cases between 1893-1975 and 1986-1994. Cause books and case records cards provide the skeletal framework for Supreme Court civil action proceedings and may include the names of parties, the dates when proceedings occurred, and can be used to determine a volume and folio number for locating final orders. Cause books were used by the courts until approximately the mid-1970s. They were replaced by case record cards, which were used until the courts turned to digital systems in the 1990s. Cause books and case record cards are also often the only source of information for divorce cases that were dropped and never completed, as no final order would have been granted, and case files would have been destroyed.
The records are arranged by case number, which can be found by using the indexes in GR-1704. Some years, the case numbering sequence was re-set. As such, case numbers within this series have been used repeatedly. Make note of the case number and year when the case started when matching records. The original bound volumes for records 1/1893 to 3300/1961 were destroyed after microfilming; retrieve records using microfilm. The records were scheduled for retention under Court Services ORCS (schedule 100152) 53200-20.

Records relating to baptisms, marriages and burials
Part of Archives research collection
The series consists of copies of registers of baptisms, marriages and burials kept at Fort Vancouver, Fort Victoria, Fort Langley, and the Parish of Victoria. The original dates of the records are 1836 to 1886 while the photocopies and transcripts were probably made around 1950.
The first mission of the Church of England on the northwest coast of North America was established by Rev. Herbert Beaver when he arrived at Fort Vancouver, the Pacific Headquarters of the Hudson's Bay Company, in May 1837. With the establishment of Fort Victoria, the Hudson's Bay Company employed Rev. Robert John Staines to replace Rev. Beaver who had resigned his Fort Vancouver post in 1838. Staines arrived in 1849 and initiated construction of Victoria's District Church in 1853. Unhappy with the company's land policies, Staines sailed for England in 1854 carrying the grievances of other settlers. His ship foundered and Staines perished. His replacement was Edward Cridge who arrived at Fort Victoria on 1 April 1855. With the issuance of an ordinance by Governor Douglas "establishing regulations for the arrangement of the affairs of the Colonial Church" Cridge could hold his first regular services in August 1856. An endowment of £25,000 from Baroness Burdett-Coutts provided for the establishment of the Diocese of British Columbia and on 12 January 1859 Letters Patent were issued creating a Bishopric and appointing Rev. George Hills as Bishop. His church was consecrated on 7 December 1865 and Edward Cridge was appointed Dean. In September 1869 the Cathedral was destroyed by fire to be replaced by a second wooden structure consecrated on 5 December 1872. This was replaced with the existing stone cathedral consecrated 28 September 1929.

Kelowna Supreme Court divorce orders
The series consists of original decrees nisi, decrees absolute, and divorce orders created between 1977 and 1996 (predominantly between 1977-1986) by the Kelowna Supreme Court registry. Between 1968 and 1985, a judgement by way of decree nisi required a three-month waiting period before a judgement by way of decree absolute could be applied for. During this time, a divorce was not legally in effect without a decree absolute. After 1985, divorce orders automatically came into effect 31 days after the divorce was granted, barring an appeal.
Decrees nisi and decrees absolute are filed together and arranged by case number, not by volume and folio or by date. This means that records of varying dates are interfiled. Orders transferred to the Kelowna registry from other court registries within the province were not assigned a Kelowna case file number and are filed alphabetically by last name at the end of this series. The records were scheduled for full retention under Court Services ORCS (schedule 100152) 51440-25.

Continuing Care facilities budget files
This series consists of records documenting the financial operation of community care facilities across BC established under the Community Care Facility Act (RSBC 1996, c.60), repealed and replaced with the Community Care and Assisted Living Act (SBC 2002, c.75). The records were created and maintained by the Continuing Care Division of the Ministry of Health (1976-2001) between 1978-1994 in BC. The Continuing Care Division monitored the operation of continuing care facilities such as family care homes, group homes, private hospitals, and intermediate care facilities and provided funding for these facilities to house individuals unable to live independently in the community due to different health related issues.
Records are arranged alphabetically by facility name and fiscal year. They include financial records such as statements of income, administrative expenses, furniture costs; salary schedules; schedules of current and projected costs including percent decrease/ increase; quarterly reports; balance sheets; auditor reports; and related correspondence. These records are classified under the one-time schedule (880181) Facility Budget Files.

Superintendent of Education correspondence and other material
GR-0450 consists of letterbook copies of correspondence outward from Superintendents John Jessop (1872-1878), C.C. McKenzie (1878-1884), S.D. Pope (1884-1899), Alexander Robinson (1899-1919) and S.J. Willis (1919-1946). The letterbooks document the multifarious duties of the Superintendents of Education, who were responsible for the administration and overall management of the provincial public school system. The first seven years of correspondence may have been written in the Superintendent's capacity as Chairman of the Board of Education.
Due to its artifactual value, only volume 1 was retained after microfilming.
Indexes to correspondence outward are included in this unit. However, the indexes have certain characteristics and idiosyncracies which researchers should note before consulting the records. No index exists to correspondence outward for 1872 and most of 1873. Correspondence outward for the period December 1873 - March 1881 is indexed in the letterbooks for those years (vols. 2-5). Another overlapping index for the period 1878-1881 will be found in vols. 192 and 193.
A more comprehensive system of indexing commenced in April 1881 and continued on through December 1905. Correspondence outward for this period was indexed in separately bound volumes (vols. 194-207). In 1906 the bound volumes were replaced by boxed index cards. GR-0450 includes index cards up to and including 1915. Regrettably, cards for the years 1916-1919 have not survived and, as a result, vols. 148-191 are not indexed.
Researchers should also be aware of the indexing methods used in the Education Office over time:
Correspondence outward, Pre-1901 (Vols. 2-5; 192-205)
Correspondence outward, 1873-1900, was indexed alphabetically, by name of recipient. For example: correspondence concerning a school would be addressed to the secretary of the local board of school trustees; it was then indexed under the name of the secretary, not under the name of the school or school district. Researchers will need to know the names of school board secretaries in order to search the indexes for documents pertaining to a particular school. The best way of identifying these officials is to consult the Annual Reports of the Public Schools. In the appendices of the Reports researchers will find an alphabetical list of public schools, showing the names of local school trustees and indicating which of the trustees had been designated secretary.
Correspondence outward, 1901-1913 (Index vols. 206-207; Index card boxes 208-212)
Beginning January 1901, correspondence outward was indexed alphabetically, by name of school or school district. Between 1906 and 1913 special index headings were reserved for correspondence with the Department of Public Works (re: the construction and maintenance of school buildings) and with provincial School Inspectors.
Correspondence outward, 1914-1915 (Card Index Boxes 213-216)
Outgoing correspondence was divided into four broad categories: General, Cities, Municipalities, and Rurals. Within each category, correspondence was indexed alphabetically. "General" correspondence includes routing circulars, acknowledgements of petitions for schools, replies to applications for teaching appointments, etc. In the "General" category special index headings were also reserved for correspondence relating to school gardens (Agriculture), school law (Attorney-General), Cadet Corps, Finance, the Free Text-Book Branch, Provincial Normal Schools, Public Works Depts., School Inspectors, Technical Education and U.B.C. Under "Cities" will be found correspondence relating to Graded City Schools; under "Municipalities," correspondence pertaining to Rural Municipality Schools. "Rurals" describes correspondence concerning the small Rural and Assisted Schools in the province.
To determine the status of a particular school i.e. whether it was classified as a graded city school, a municipal school, etc., consult the published Annual Reports of the Public Schools.

Disaster financial assistance helps to replace or restore essential items and property that have been destroyed or damaged to pre-disaster condition. Assistance is available to qualifying home-owners, residential tenants, small businesses, farm operators, and not-for-profit charitable organizations. These records were created and received between 1994 and 2001 by PEP. The records cover the details of each claim, the determination of eligibility, as well as records relating to appeals and disbursements. This series documents disaster relief from flood damage in British Columbia under the Emergency Program Act (RSBC 1996, c.111).
