Records relating to CANOL project and Alaska Highway

This series contains records relating to the CANOL Project and the Alaskan Highway. The CANOL (Canadian Oil) pipeline project, conceived in response to fears of a Japanese invasion of Alaska, 1942, consisted of the construction of a road and pipeline from the Norman Wells (NWT) oil field to a refinery at Whitehorse which served as a junction for pipelines to Alaska and Alberta to supply refined petroleum products necessary for the defense of Alaska and the Canadian North. This body of records, part of the National Archives and Records Service's Record Group 338 - Records of the United States Army Commands, consists of general orders. international agreements, organization manuals, reports, briefs, correspondence and administrative records relating to the CANOL Project and the Alaskan Highway.

Oil -- a new industry in British Columbia

The item is a composite print of an industrial film, from 1961. It shows the construction of Western Pacific's crude oil pipeline from the Peace River region to Kamloops. Includes shots of Barkerville; seismic blasting; drilling for oil; laying of pipeline (with crossings of the Fraser and Quesnel Rivers); BC oil refineries (including Ioco); Prince George; Vancouver (harbour, Lion's Gate Bridge, skyline); Cariboo range land and family recreation.

The item consists of a public relations film on the development of the Okanagan Helicopters Group. The release print contains BC footage includes Carl Agar flying an early helicopter; use of helicopters for aerial survey of Kildala Pass transmission line route (Kitimat project) and flying supplies to stations along the route; delivering supplies to geological surveys and drilling sites in the Rockies; topographical survey work; survey and monitoring of the Trans Mountain pipeline; re-seeding forests from the air; headquarters and hangers at Vancouver airport.

Davis admits that he traded-in first class airplane tickets for regular fare tickets and pocketed the difference. But, Davis says, he did not claim some other expenses he could have claimed, and the refunds he received were kept in lieu of claiming for those other items. Davis also says that he reimbursed the government for some of the difference. Guy Houghton Blanchet papers

The series consists of correspondence, journals describing Blanchet’s work in the Northwest Territories and with Canol, drafts of "Search in the North" and an autobiography which was never published, and of manuscripts of articles, short stories and poetry. There are also clippings, mainly on the search for the MacAlpine party, various notebooks, and published articles written or owned by Blanchet.

A large collection of photographs, negatives, postcards and thirteen photo albums have been transferred to Visual Records accession 197901-004. The albums are annotated and relate to the north and the Peace River District.
