Bill of lading and land receipt

The file consists of two items: a bill of lading for the steamer Beaver, under Captain William Brotchie, to ship goods from Fort Nisqually to Camosun, dated 20 June 1843 and a receipt from the Vancouver Island Colonial Surveyor for 98 acres of land in Cowichan district, 1858.

Letters to Lyall Newcomen Cooper

The file consists of letters to Lyall Newcomen Cooper encouraging him to retire on Vancouver Island. The letters are from George A. Walkem and "Stiffy" Fairhurst encouraging Cooper to retire to Vancouver Island from the Sudan and offering advice on social life, sport, and country properties; letters from Walkem to B.C. Agent General and head of the Canadian Pacific Railway in London asking the them to assist Cooper and outlining his wants and documents re Egyptian service.

Cross section book, no. 409

The item is a timber cruiser's logbook, apparently owned by Donald Alexander McPhee. The book contains sketch maps of Victoria Lumber and Manufacturing Company lots in the Cowichan and other South Vancouver Island districts with timber types noted.

Journal notes : Kwawkewkth Agency

The item consists of draft notes presumably prepared by a member (not identified) of the Royal Commission on Indian Affairs for the Province of British Columbia (McKenna-McBride Royal Commission). The notes are not dated by year, but are thought to have been written in 1914. The address for C.O. Marston in Alert Bay appears on the first page.

The notes refer to the Kwawkewlth Agency region (northern Vancouver Island) and refer to six tribes, which are not always clearly identified in the notes. Varying information is provided for each tribe and may include the name of the chief, population and demographics information, employment and economic activities, customs, acreage and reserve allotments, land use, and discussions relating to education, medical care, and relations with Indian Agents (primarily William May Halliday).

Migrant's Life, 1912

The file contains a typescript by Leonard Humphreys titled "Migrant's Life, 1912". It contains an account of Mr. Humphreys emigration from Liverpool, England to Vancouver and his subsequent move to Vancouver Island.

Personal memoirs

"Memoirs". Genealogical account of the Burkitt family and reminiscences of author's boyhood in London, England; account of author's apprenticeship at Salvation Army's Hadleigh training farm and of his emigration to Vancouver Island in 1911. Reminiscences of his career as farmer, dairyman, and horticulturist at Westholme (1911-1914), Saltspring Island (1919-1949), and Sooke (1950s). MS includes account of Burkitt's tenure as director of Saltspring and Gulf Islands Agricultural Association (1921-ca. 1938) and work with Canadian Corps of Commissionaires in Victoria (ca. 1960-1977). Also, reminiscences of author's military service (1914-1918) first as member of 67th Battalion (Western Scots) and later as pilot in the Royal Flying Corps. Xerox photos of author and family also included.

Diary of a trip "out West" in 1933

The item consists of an illustrated typed transcript of a diary of a trip "out West' taken by Kit A. Sauvary from June 22 to July 30, 1933. Kit Sauvary and her party traveled across the Northern United States by automobile from Toronto, entering British Columbia South of Kootenay Lake. They took the Southern Trans-Provincial Highway to Princeton, North to Spences Bridge, and down the Fraser Canyon. They visited Vancouver and Vancouver Island before returning via the Banff Windermere Highway and the Rockies, through the United States and back to Toronto. The diary was written as a series of letters to Sauvary's parents in Guernsey, typed up in 1979 and contains photographs and marked route maps of the journey from 1933.

Accounts of collecting trips

The file consists of a typed transcript of an account of collecting trips made to the West Coast of Vancouver Island and the Queen Charlotte Islands in the summers of 1945 and 1946 by California biologist Edward F. Ricketts. The account is a mixture of notes on marine life and descriptions of places visited, people met methods of travel, etc. Ricketts was a friend of John Steinbeck and this account was apparently intended for Steinbeck's use. (For a biography of Ricketts see Steinbeck's "Notes from the Sea of Cortez"). The transcript, which is entitled "Transcript of summer 1945 and 1946 notes based on trips to the outer shores, W. Coast Vanc. Is., Queen Charlottes etc. New Series Note Books 3 and 4" was presented to the Royal British Columbia Museum by Joel W. Hedgpeth of Santa Rosa, California. A copy of Hedgpeth's covering letter is included with the transcript.
