Television stock shots. The reel begins with brief sequences on the Sooke Region Museum and on Helmcken House. The balance of the reel (shot 06-Dec-1977) deals with the old Immigration Building at the corner of Dallas Road and Ontario Street in Victoria's James Bay neighbourhood. The building is in the process of being demolished. In the years 1908-1923, it was used as a detention centre for processing and confining Chinese immigrants. Dr. David Lai tours the building, talks about Chinese immigration and the head tax, and transcribes some of the old Chinese writing from the walls of the cells, which comprise messages and poems written by the immigrants confined there.

News item. Dr. David Lai explains how Chinese people immigrated to Canada -- especially Victoria -- during the later part of the 19th century and first part of the 20th century. In particular, he discusses the old Immigration Building (on Dallas Road in James Bay) which was really a detention centre. Exterior and interior shots of this building, which is now being demolished. Some interesting Chinese writing, by some of the former inmates, is uncovered and translated.

SUMMARY: This program comprises some random impressions of growing up in Victoria at the turn of the 20th century. Voices heard include: Mrs. Ford, Mrs. Robertson, Major Montieth, Mrs. Hood, Mr. Walter Engelhardt, Mr. Justice J.B. Clearihue, Mrs. Pinder, and Mrs. Madge Muskett.

Consists of two audio recordings in which Madge (Wolfenden) Hamilton reminisces about her longtime friend, Emily Carr. She recalls the Carr family in the latter part of the 19th century in their James Bay homes, where they were friends with the Wolfendens. The first recording (T2708:0001) also covers Madge (Wolfenden) Hamilton's career as a public servant and librarian.

The item consists of one album of approximately 150-200 large scale, or mammoth plate, photographs depicting landscapes, architecture, and people in Victoria (Esquimalt, the Gorge, James Bay) as well as Madeira, Bahia, Rio Janeiro, Paraguay, Melbourne, New Zealand, Kamakuya (Kamakura, Japan), Honolulu, the Sandwich Islands, Chili, Jamaica, Egypt, and possibly the Sudan.

Photographers include Felice Beato and Javier Lopez. Photographs of B.C. taken by Frederick Dally. All photographs have been captioned by the album creator, most with elaborate script in red and black ink and some in pencil.

At the top of the first page a portrait of a man has been adhered and captioned “Rear Admiral G. Phipps Hornby” (1785-1867). In the centre of the page is an image of approximately seven sailing vessels with the caption “The Flying Squadron, 19th July, Plymouth, 1869.” At the bottom of the page is an image of numerous men posed aboard a ship, with a dingo.
