Biographical history

James William Bland was born in Callao, Peru on February 3, 1853. He was the son of James William Bland, engineer and Elizabeth Bland, nee Everson. The family arrived in Victoria in 1859. After trying several occupations, including office boy, brewer and wharfinger, Bland was made an usher in the Supreme Court, a position he held for many years. For 24 years, Bland was a member of the volunteer Victoria Hook and Ladder Co. James William Bland died in Victoria on February 24, 1921.

The fonds consists of a letterbook containing copies of correspondence relating to James Bland's inquiries about his family background. The fonds also includes two certificates issued to James William Bland to commemorate his service with the Victoria Hook and Ladder Co.
