Scope and content

The series consists of J.D. Pemberton's personal ledger book dating from 1880 to 1890, and records labelled “Pemberton & Son in account current with J.D. Pemberton,” dating from 1888 to 1893. The series also consists of balance sheets and statements (1888-1891) relating to “Home Collections,” Pemberton Farm, and Gonzales Estate.

The account balance sheets within the personal ledger book are not arranged alphabetically or strictly chronologically, but an alphabetical index is included at the front of the volume. Entries appear to be related primarily to loans made by or mortgages held by J.D. Pemberton and receipts and disbursements related to his farm properties. The volume also includes information about shares related to companies such as Nanaimo Gas and Westminster Gas, as well as balance sheets for what may have been his personal account with the Bank of British Columbia, Vancouver. The volume is less than 1/4 full, though several pages in the middle of the volume record general collections.
