Biographical history

Joseph Despard Pemberton was born in Dublin, Ireland, and came to B.C. in 1851 to serve as a surveyor with the Hudson's Bay Company. He was Surveyor General for the Colony of Vancouver Island, a politician, and landowner in the area that would become Oak Bay. He married Theresa Jane Despard Grautoff in 1864. Their six children were: Frederick Bernard Pemberton, Ada Georgina Pemberton, Sophia Theresa (Sophie) Pemberton, Harriet Susan Pemberton, Joseph Despard Pemberton, and William Parnell Despard Pemberton. In 1887, with his son, Frederick, J.D. Pemberton founded the partnership Pemberton & Son, succeeded by Pemberton Holmes Ltd. J.D. Pemberton died in Victoria in 1893.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of correspondence (E/B/P36) and papers (E/B/P36.9) pertaining to appointed positions of Joseph Despard Pemberton; a surveying notebook from 1851 to 1858 (MS-1978) containing sketches, instructions, notes and drafts of letters; miscellaneous papers relating to his household (E/C/P36.9); and correspondence to Pemberton regarding his investment in the ship Western Slope (J/G/W52M).

The fonds also includes an unprocessed accession (94-4448) consisting of miscellaneous receipts, invoices, envelopes and correspondence relating to J.D. Pemberton's personal life and career as a surveyor and public servant.
