Name of creator
Joseph Haegert was born in 1902. He grew up in Victoria, worked on board whaling supply ships, travelled around the world as a wireless operator aboard freighters and trans-oceanic passenger ships, and served aboard supply ships and troopships during World War Two.
Scope and content
The fonds consists of Joseph Haegert's reminiscences of his boyhood in Victoria, ca. 1910-1916, and of his experiences aboard whaling supply ships. It also includes contemporary accounts of his travels around the world as a wireless operator aboard freighters and trans-oceanic passenger ships, and accounts of his wartime experience aboard supply ships and troopships. The written material is complemented by Haegert's tape-recorded reminiscences (ca. 1985), and by a videotape interview recorded in 1998.
