News item. In summer, the Canadian Coast Guard's search and rescue methods include the use of a high-powered pontoon boat which can tow a disabled vessel to shore in record time. In winter, the Coast Guard uses the pilot boat for these missions. Footage of the summer operations in Juan De Fuca Strait.

Newsreel tootage. The record commercial salmon season of 1958 is illustrated with a sequence showing a seiner setting its net and hauling it in, brailing the salmon aboard, and unloading it onto a packer ship at the BC Packers wharf in Steveston. Gill netter feleet at anchor.

Haro and Rosario Straits

Item consists of bound atlas measuring 35 x 52 cm. It contains one admiralty chart (number 2689) of the Haro and Rosario Straits as surveyed by Captain G.H. Richards and the officers of H.M. S. Plumper in 1858-1859 and Juan de Fuca Strait to Admiralty Inlet by Captain H. Kellet in 1847. The map was published in July 1859 and hydrographer corrections were made in September 1864 and February 1865. The map also includes four inset elevations: (View A) Patos Island and Monarch Head, (View B) Mount Constitution and Puffin Island; (View C) Galiano Island and Mount Parke; and (View D) Mount Benson, Narrow Island, Thetis Island, and Hall Island.

Film depicts Marilyn Bell (later DiLascio)'s swim across the Strait of Juan de Fuca on August 23, 1956. Film was commissioned courtesy of Victoria-area businessman Harold B. Elworthy.

Memorandum of co-operation between the Province of British Columbia and the State of Washington

The item consists of a two page memorandum of co-operation dated July 10 1972. The memorandum is signed by Premier W.A.C. Bennett and Washington State Governor Daniel J. Evans and is an agreement to protect the common water boundary consisting of the Strait of Juan de Fuca, the Strait of Georgia, Puget Sound and their adjacent waters from the dangers of oil spills.

There is also a history of the Strait of Juan de Fuca and diary of Frances Barkley; correspondence of Tourist Trade Development Association of Victoria and Vancouver Island, and of its Historic Objects and Natural Features Committee (1930-1941), with correspondence on the grave of Capt. George Vancouver (1935-1937), and with Denys Nelson re Indian fort at Crescent Beach.

Also included are correspondence, articles, notes on tree growth and oddities; documents concerning Fairfield Farm Estate (1910-1935), Frederick George Walker (1890, 1931); mementoes, European War 1914-1918; reminiscences, notes, invitations (1891, 1899, 1936) and notes on experiences as law clerk.

Salmon run

Documentary. Life cycle of the sockeye salmon, especially their return to the headwaters of the Fraser River to spawn. Shows efforts of scientists and engineers to facilitate the salmon run, and the contribution of the International Pacific Salmon Fisheries Commission. Includes shots of fishing boats setting their nets, cannery operations, Vancouver's Chinatown, salmon fighting the rapids at Hells Gate, and the development of fish ladders or fishways to aid the salmon.

The Princess

Documentary. This film depicts a trip from Seattle to Victoria on the S.S. Princess Marguerite, and profiles the history of the ship -- and of her namesake, an earlier B.C. coastal steamship that was sunk during World War II while serving as a troop transport.
