Minute book of Victoria Special Sessions, Petty Sessions and Licensing Court
- GR-3771
- File
- 1853-1865
The file consists of one volume that was used by the Vancouver Island court system from 1853 to 1865. Initial use of the volume predates the creation of the Supreme Court of Civil Justice by several months, and its subsequent relationship with the Supreme Court is unclear. Later entries list charges made against the Court, and include a line for the Supreme Court of Civil Justice. An 1861 newspaper clipping tucked into the volume indicates that at least some of the records included in the ledger relate to a special magistates’ session that was held at the Victoria Police Court.
The volume includes entries from the Victoria Special Sessions and the Victoria Petty Sessions, as well as a listing of liquor licenses that were granted at the Victoria Licensing Sessions. The magistrates listed include David Cameron, Thomas James Skinner, Thomas Blenkhorn, Kenneth McKenzie, and E.E. Langford. The first entry of the volume is dated October 6 1853, and notes that David Cameron has been appointed magistrate for the District of Victoria.
