Biographical history

In 1923 the British Columbia government established a Supreme Court registry at Kelowna, in the Yale Judicial District, effective May 1, 1923. It was approved and ordered by Order-in-Council 0408-1923, dated April 13, 1923.

By the same order, a County Court registry was also established at Kelowna.

Currently (to March 31, 2016) the Kelowna Registry of the Supreme Court continues as an active registry.

Custodial history

Scope and content

The series consists of probate/estate files filed in the Kelowna Supreme Court between 1921 and 2005. The files are arranged chronologically and by probate file code.

Physical condition

Immediate source of acquisition

Records in accession 83-1117 transferred from the Ministry of Justice in January 2016 and 2017.

Arrangement

The file number refers to the number assigned by the court registry rather than to the file's physical order in the box. Each year, the numbering system restarted from 1 and ascended chronologically. Thus, it is possible to have multiple files with the same number in a box, as they date from different years.
