Biographical history

The County Court of Nanaimo “holden at Cumberland” existed by 1898 and presumably earlier. [See: BC Gazette 1898, p. 2385]. In 1952 the County Court registry at Cumberland was closed by OIC #0889-1952, approved and ordered April 18, 1952, effective April 1, 1952. By the same order, the Supreme Court registry at Cumberland was also closed. Also by the same order, registries of the County Court and Supreme Court were established at Courtenay. (Sources: Orders-in-Council and BC Gazette 1952, p. 1250)

Custodial history

Scope and content

The series consists of Land Settlement Board Lien notes (#60-681) registered in Cumberland Court House from 1920 to 1922. A lien is a registered legal claim on personal property, most often used as security or collateral for a debt or loan. Individuals borrowed money from the Land Settlement Board for a term or 1, 2 or 3 years at 7 or 7 1/2% interest in order to purchase cattle, horses and wagons.
