Biographical history

The Post Office Dept. of the Colony of British Columbia was established in 1864 by the Postal Service Ordinance (27 Vict., No. 14). The main post office was established at New Westminster. The department was administered by a postmaster general who appointed Postmasters. The postal service legislation was revised in 1867 for the united colony of British Columbia by an ordinance to assimilate the law regulating the postal service (30 Vict., No. 25).

After confederation in 1871, responsibility for the postal service transferred to the Canadian government.
