The item is a sound recording of Victoria-born businessman A.J.T. Taylor. Taylor promoted the development of the British Pacific Properties in West Vancouver, and the construction of Lions Gate Bridge. These recordings, made by the BBC during a visit to England in 1936, have Taylor reminiscing about Victoria, Nanaimo and Vancouver (1890s-1910s), including his experiences in the boarding house business. The interview seems to be incomplet;e, suggesting that some additional discs are missing.

The item consists of an ECO master made from an industrial film originally made between 1937 and 1939. It contains a detailed record of the construction of the First Narrows Bridge (Lion's Gate Bridge) between Vancouver and the North Shore of Burrard Inlet. A.J.T. Taylor, who promoted the idea of the bridge and the residential development of the North Shore, is seen discussing the plans with architect John Anderson. The bridge was first crossed by a car on November 4, 1938 and opened to the public on November 12, 1938. John Anderson receives the first toll ticket. Charles Marega's sculptured lions are shown. The "Empress of Japan" steams under the bridge. On May 29, 1939 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth cross the bridge and later, under naval escort, they pass under it aboard a ship bound for Victoria.

The item is a promotional film on colour print, made in the mid 1950s. It shows the planning, design, construction and features of a BCE "Ease-of-Living" modern home, equipped with up-to-date electrical appliances. Footage of special interest includes a view from a car crossing Lion's Gate Bridge and views of the British Properties.

SUMMARY: "Heritage Theatre" was a series of short historical plays set in the Vancouver environs. These vignettes illustrate some of the significant events and interesting episodes from Vancouver's earliest ti;mes. First broadcast in 1977, the plays were made in co-operation with the Social Planning Department of the City of Vancouver. This series was broadcast during the summer of 1981. This episode, "The; Battle Of The Bridge - 1933" by Cherie Thiessen, re-creates a heated city council meeting discussing the proposal for the Lions Gate Bridge.;

The item is a reel of film footage. Shot for engineering purposes, this footage uses single-frame or "time-lapse" cinematography, shot from inside a vehicle, to record automobile traffic. The first section appears to show the Squamish Highway going north. The section travels on the highway through West Vancouver, across Lions Gate Bridge, and onto Denman and Davie Streets in downtown Vancouver. The third section appears to have been shot on an interior highway south of Kamloops.

The item is a training film on the technique of road surfacing, using as a model the project to re-surface Lion's Gate Bridge with coal tar epoxy resin. The series consists of files created by the Dept. of Highways (and its predecessor body, the Dept. of Public Works, Highways Branch) in 1907 and between 1933 and 1957. Most of the files refer to the First Narrows Bridge Company and seem to have been transferred to government when the British Columbia Toll Highways and Bridge Authority acquired the shares in the company and took over the First Narrows Bridge (also known as the Lions Gate Bridge) in 1955. The files concern trust deeds, articles of association, correspondence and various other documents about the company and include two technical drawings of the bridge and its approach through Stanley Park (box 2, folder 4).

The series also includes two files of invitations, received and declined, of the opening of the King George VI Highway in October 1940, a single file with a partial transcript of a 1954 hearing before the Committee of Forestry and Fisheries and a single file from 1907 regarding a proposed bridge at Second Narrows, Burrard Inlet.
